Title: What's the best thing that's happened to you today?
Post by: Sugarlump on March 26, 2011, 05:26:36 PM
There's been a lot of depressing topics lately  :(
How about something cheerful?
What is the best thing that's happened to you today?

For me, knowing someone else cares about me ...  :cuddle;

So what about you?
What IS the best thing that's happened to you today?

 :secret;

I had the pleasure of helping a member fulfill a wish. That was great fun!  :yahoo;

I had many wonderful things. But this one kind of stands out:

Early this morning we saw a bluebird on the bluebird house...and then one went INTO the house!

Another sign of Spring!  :cheer:

And I had another wonderful reaffirmation of the goodness of people.  :2thumbsup;

We puttered....I love to putter.  :2thumbsup;

Next?  :clap;

Three new people asked for the paperwork to fill out to be considered as living donors.  This makes seven total so far - I am truly hoping that at least one of them pans out SOON!

Getting the news about someone else's incredible act of kindness, for one!

I finally accomplished getting rid of my old, broken, useless desktop computer and printer that can't work with laptops!  And I did that *all by myself*!!!! The computer was upstairs in the spare room, and I managed to get that thing, including the 17" monitor, (and that's the old, boob-tube kind, not one of those fancy flat screens) down those stairs and into the back of my car - all on my own!!!  Then, my dear, sweet and kind brother-in-law came over and moved the old 25" boob tube into the back of my car (I wasn't even going to attempt that one!).  I then took it all to a local real estate office who was kindly collectiing these items from the public, and they took all of it out of my car for me. I gotta say, 5-door hatchbacks work wonders for these kinds of chores! I have been wanting to do this for oh, for more than 2 years now!

I then came home and accomplished more de-cluttering.  I'm not a fan of cleaning, but sometimes, when I get really into it, I kind of enjoy it.  Found old pictures, including one of my 2 Grandmas (RIP Grandmas!).  Now I'm hungry!

I got my oil changed, car tags renewed, made scones, and went out to dinner with a friend. I hate dealing with car stuff, so it's a great feeling to have that all done, and who can argue with fresh cones or dinner out with a friend? It was a good day.

Um, nope.  That's not to say it's been a bad day; it's just been a bit 'normal'.

However, something really good happened for my Mog cat.  He jumped on the bed and nudged his face against Tabatha's and SHE DIDN'T HISS AT HIM!   :yahoo;

The best thing that happened to me today would be a day out at the movie theater with hubby and friends, then afterward a late lunch at a place we've never been before. It's always fun trying something new.

Today was labwork day.  Ugh.  I was driving to the lab like I do every damn month, feeling sorry for myself and resenting the role that CKD has played in my life.  I arrived and checked in as per usual with my lab request and my Gift of Hope box.  One of the phlebotomists is a little round Polish lady who has been sticking me for years now.  We aren't friends or anything, but we're used to each other.  Anyway, she is usually friendly and bubbly, but today I could tell that she was most unhappy.  I was sitting there ready to be stuck, and, well, I just couldn't say nothing.  So I told her that I was very sorry that she was sad, and she started to cry.  It has been a very long time since I've seen someone look that unhappy.  I gave her a hug, and I think she appreciated a kind word.

I guess this is the best thing that happened to me today because it gave me the chance to just be nice to someone.

I hope she will be OK.

Two to pick from:

Lunch with a friend, and a lot of juicy girl talk to go with it.

One good belly laugh from a cat with spring fever, certain she can sprout wings and fly if she can just lay a paw on a bird.  (Followed by a "Thunk" noise as she realized that the porch rail was not going to move down just because the bird had moved up.)

Mine is a little late, but, 2 days ago I got a call from my Transplant Clinic to come in get blood drawn for a potential live donor match!!!  They took 7 vials, and I had a great time cracking jokes with the phlebotomist and his trainee.  My neighbor friend who has offered to get tested to donate had to move her appt up by 2 weeks, due to her getting a new job.  And, the new job is with the same place that I'll be getting my eventual transplant at, so if this works out, they should be okay with giving her time off!  I hope!!!!  Granted, she will be working at a satellite location, but still!  So, we shall see what happens.  Time will tell....

Its amazing who you can find on facebook!!!!  ;)

Including people who don't want to be found!  One of my professors was talking about a corporate lawsuit she was involved in.  The CEO was being sued, but had enough money to just keep dodging the process servers.  No one could find him - he was out of sight, and not coming up for air.  Except he took his wife with him on his "vacation" and she kept posting pics of where they were on her facebook account.  The process server just followed along with a laptop and wifi, and served the guy as he came down from the scenic overlook where he'd just posed for a picture.  Here ya go, Mr. Bigshot - you've been served!

My best thing - finishing the 24 hour blood pressure monitoring I had to do.  I get to sleep uninterrupted every hour on the hour tonight, thank heavens.
I'd be less annoyed about it if the hospital had their timing right.  As the nurse explains what I have to do, she says "We do this twice for every transplant patient.  Once at 3 months and again at 6 months from when you had your surgery."
Uh-huh.  It's been 18 months, and this is the first time I've ever heard of it.  ::)

Have to say I've never heard of routine bp 24 hour monitoring for transplant patients? Good job since my bp has been all over the place lately.
They've just changed my bp medication for the 3rd time to see if they can stabilize it. Apparently its usually the drugs wonderful (side effect number 310!!!)  :)

I had a very lucky escape today.
One of the neighbours had her place burning to smithereens
and we were all evacuated because of the smoke, fumes and dangers of a gas-explosion.
There were many firemen and even more policemen, but no ambulance.
The neighbour whose place burnt down suffered badly and walked around in a daze.
One neighbour suffered from an asthma-attack caused by the fumes and smoke
and many frail and vulnerable people had to stand in the cold.
I don’t comprehend. Where was the ambulance?
Why were there so many policemen and no ambulance?

hmm we have mother's day in May so I was not aware it was celebrated in the UK and US and probably elsewhere this past Sunday. oops. Happy mother's day to all those mothers!!! :)

Can't think of too many good things that have happened recently, unless you count India's win of the cricket one day world cup, which was sensational (and won me over $90!), oh and my poor football team, after losing 13 games on the trot to this one club managed to DRAW (in a game we should have won but were robbed by the unpires!) and I was there at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. I think I got a bit of a cold, but it was worth it to see my tigers finally compete with one of the best teams out there and take it right up to them.

Hopefully more good things are to come.

I woke up and saw my hubby's beautiful face still sleeping away, let my dog out, stepped on to the deck and realized it was the first warm day after 4 months of winter! Then, I went to physio and had a marvelous work out. I came home, took dog for walk in crazy but warm winds. At some cottage cheese with blueberries and a tea for lunch. Filling out a survey by my home hemo team, then logged on here to get some good advice from all you guys!

I had a colonoscopy and endoscopy today!  Now some of you might not think that's a good thing but it was the last set of tests that I needed to get the green light for my transplant!  The GI doc told my husband that everything looked good and I have the clean as a whistle pictures to prove it!   ;D

My sister also called yesterday to get the web address for the living donor paperwork!  She and my brother in law are both going to be tested!  So my mom is in progress with her testing and I have four more people who have/will be turning in paperwork with two more on the fence!  I can smell a transplant a-comin my way!   :bandance;

My caring thoughts are with you, cattlekid.  Hope every thing works out. :cuddle;

The best thing that happened to me today is that they were able to take of 4.5kg with NO CRAMPING!   My nurses have been doing some little tricks when I come after a weekend.  One uses profiling and now this one used something else.  Don't care what it was - I DID NOT CRAMP!

I usually cramp if they take of more than 3kg.

One exam done!  3 more next week, plus the project from  >:D, and them I'm done.

Best part of the exam tonight - one part of it was on a computer program that I just hate, hate, hate.  It's confusing, not user friendly, and the few exercises on it we did in class did not really help explain it at all.  I was not looking forward to that section at all today.  The program crashed and we got to skip that section completely!!!   :bandance; :bandance; :bandance;

I slept a full 10 hours after working till 4am the night(morning?) before.

Today had TWO big winners at the track my pick o' the day HEXY LEGS paying $19.70 for a win was sweet so turned an investment of $10 in a mix of win/place bets into just over $100. That on top of another horse that paid $15odd for a win. That definitely made my work day go better :) Oh yeah, fixed some problems too (see I do work from time to time in between horse races  >:D >:D >:D)

PS: think my donor was a bit of a punter, but I seem to have got a bit of a reasonable knack for picking the odd winner (and a bunch of losers too!)  >:D

The best thing that has happened to me all year is a brush with death. It causes you to stare your own mortality in the face and to reevaluate your life and consider what is truly important. All my life I've been Cautious Al, probably have list of about 50 things that I would have liked to have done but didn't, for various reasons ... finances, dependents, fear, afraid of what people would say, its not the norm...Do I want to die with all those regrets?
Hell no. I'm claiming back my life, well mine and Sidney's and making big changes. If I want to fly to Hong Kong for the weekend I will, I will dress as I please because I feel good, I will not let fear of the unknown hold me back, if I want to inhabit the shadowy world of cyberspace after midnight and explore the darker side I will. I will do as much as I can within the time I have left.
I still intend to look after Sid, and to listen to the docs but it won't restrict me or my zest for life. i know a lot of you probably think I am quite negative about transplants but I can only go by my own experiences. And they have been difficult. And the battle still continues. But it doesn't stop me from making my choices. I need to stay in charge of my life, not anyone else. Especially not doctors or disapproving relatives. Having a transplant does not turn you into a saint overnight!
I shall in future become Reckless Al. Even Hedonistic Al! And enjoy the time I have left to the full.
Some might say this is the steroids talking! but I choose this new life, steroids or no steroids.

I definitely agree with you that this has made me rethink all aspects of my life.  It has made me realize what's important (my family and friends) and that spending quality time with them is what I want to do.  I don't sweat the small stuff anymore, and work is just that...work.  I've already spent too much of my life worrying about every little thing at work.  I still work hard, but I don't stress about it as well because that just doesn't help, and in fact hinders me.  I use my obsessiveness to continue to research my disease and treat it as best I can.  I agree with you, Al, it's time to dance.  Peanut butter jelly time!

Oh, peanut butter and jam is a luxury here - very quick to make for the kids for lunch, fulfills government requirements for a protein and a grain - possibly even fruit, though that might be pushing it - kids generally love it, and with all the children who have peanut allergies, it is cause for celebration when you are allowed to serve it to them. The only question asked at my younger son's orientation at the beginning of last school year was "Peanut butter - yes or no?" All the parents congratulated this man on asking such a great question, and the answer was yes!

However, I am pretty sure that Kim was referring to a dance. I don't know the details but I think I've heard "Peanut butter jelly time" come from the television when my son watches those shows about adolescents living as professional musicians. (NOT Hannah Montanna - there are others.)

When I was growing up, my grandmother's kitchen clock had a place of honor in our breakfast room.  My father wound it every Sunday for decades.  It has a separate windup mechanism for the chime's hammer.  When my father died, my mother just let the clock wind down and put it away in a closet.  When she died last year, I brought the clock from Texas to Chicago, and today I wound it up for the first time.  I can't get the chime to chime the proper number of times, though; there is a trick to it that I never learned.  But at least it is now in my own kitchen, tick-tocking away.

So
A box of copy paper
small paper clips
Kleenex, for me and the kids- I like Puffs with aloe, got the kids regular kleenex
Tabs for marking chapters
Two three-ring hole punches
scotch tape
Shredder pages to clean the shredder

Lots to clean up. Lost some windows at school and glass in the greenhouse. The hail took a couple years worth of gravel off the shingle roof and our camper was damaged. We don't have phone service at school.

I hope you have as lovely a time as possible with her.

Sugar, please may I have your bank balance?  Kthanx.

We saw John Cleese last night.  He made us laugh.  As for today ... I'm being lazy.  'Tis nice.

I woke up :rofl; lol no seriously, I made a date to see my mom on Sunday for mothersday. I haven't seen her in 6 months. My family won't be joining us. They have stuff to do. (not a good thing)

It is a good thing (one thing that this disease changed - she started caring - after 40 years) I know some of you know that my mom and I don't get along at all, but I am really making an effort.

 :2thumbsup;

I was back in my own classroom today. I enjoy visiting other classes, but it isn't the same as being with my own kids.  :clap;

Today, I held a part for my son, age 7, and my neice, age 6, for their birthdays, it was Western Themed, good turnout! We had a blast playing Pin the tail on the donkey, Horseshoes, we panned for gold, and had a Pinata! And of course cake and icecream...
We invited 40 school kids plus family, and only 4 showed up from school lol
AmaZING  day, sooo glad the rain held off until literally the SECOND we were getting in our cars to leave the park!!!!

I got some flowers planted (and others will have to wait as a nice snake was basking in one of my flower boxes and I didn't want to disturb him).

We also went to a nice covered dish dinner with lots of friends.

Today I walked around my local lake, which is Albert Park Lake (where the Melbourne Forumula One Grand Prix is held, incidently). The day was sunny and warm and lovely and I saw these gorgeous swans with their youngsters on their backs and had to take a picture, which I'm attaching.

Tonight.. my tigers won the annual "Dreamtime at the 'G" game in front of 83,000+ fans. We were the underdog, but I was confident we would win, and we beat the Bombers by 16 points. It was a sweet sweet victory, and given I had money on it - extra sweet!

oh, and I drank 4 beers during the game - another reason to be greatful for my transplant!!!!

Happy (belated) Birthday Brightsky and many happy returns.

My good news is that for the past few days
I had a huge problem with irritated skin that needed scratching,
and I was beginning to think, this was it,
my  first symptoms of needing “D” have arrived etc.

After eliminating all possible causes I found out
that my symptoms are only an allergic reaction
to the new fabric-softener I had bought last week.

All I had to do was just wash all my clothes again
without any fabric softener and all is well again.

About a 3 weeks ago I received a tip for the Epsom Derby (UK) horse race from a very reliable and sweet source, so invested some funds (just a little, mind you) in this French horse, Pour Moi up against the might of the Queen's own Carlton House. Race starts and Pour Moi is at the back and seemingly staying there, and I figured that bet was gone for all money until the jockey brings the hrse up at the end and steals the race on the line (and standing in the saddle celbrating as they cross the line, which is unusual!). Jackpot!!!! Major win at some very nice odds ($9 for the win thank you!) and the Queen goes home unhappy. Thank you to the UK's greatest horse expert that I know :)))))))))))

Today's cruise around the lake on my sister's pontoon led to sightings of 2 loons with two chicks, 2 swans with 4 cygnets, and 2 geese with 11 goslings.  Plus, we got to see the male loon dive, catch a fish, and streak under water within a foot of the boat to pop up and pass the little fish to the chicks.  Amazing how fast they can propel themselves while underwater!

I had the BEST day!

We drove 6 hours from Western Massachusetts to Rockport, Maine. Then IKETCHUM and his son came and took us for a lovely walk across a long breakwater to one of Maine's picturesque lighthouses. We went out for dinner and I had the most delicious fish chowder with an Atlantic ocean shrimp roll (a kind of sandwich).

But the best part was meeting my good IHD friend IKETCHUM.  :2thumbsup;

I got a grocery bag fulll of tiger lily bulbs today from a lady who was thinning hers.  There must be 50 bulbs and I can't wait to plant them.  Free things always make it a good day. :thumbup;    Even better; having the energy to plant and care for my garden this year.

Went on a glider ride - 2500 ft up, 30 minutes soaring on thermals like a bird, with no engine.  I got my nephew a gift certificate for his birthday, so I bought myself a ride, too.  Wheeeeee!  He was totally pumped - and is now pumping me to pay for private lessons when he turns 14 in two years.  $1900 to get his license. NOT!  But I'm glad he was so thrilled with his gift.  He even got to fly his for a bit, and did a high speed curve around the field - he was bouncing so high when he got out, he could have towed my glider up without the plane attached!

My nephew's Little League team continued their unblemished winning streak today.  They won against the second team they had to play in the playoffs, and on to the next one tomorrow.  If they make it through the next two, they won't have lost a single game all season and will sweep the playoffs.   :bandance;  So much fun watching them act like calm, collected little gentlemen while they shake hands with the losing team ---- and then start screaming hysterically as soon as they get back to the dug out!

Great news, tyefly! Good luck!
I remember using root-powder on all sorts of cuttings
and sometimes they developed roots  and sometimes they did not.

I had a very good experience today as well.
I have been trying to read scores of piano-music
which I had not come across before,
& play the piano with both hands at the same time
and it is finally working.

I am very pleased about this because I have no teacher
and I thought sometimes it might be too difficult.

Yesterday my wife and I hung an extending 10-power mirror on her bathroom wall. Tricky job because we live in a building with steel studs and a stud-finder doesn't work. That means lots of poking around.

After we finished with the mirror, we hung a new towel rack. Oops! The new brackets are 1/4 inch too far apart. Sigh. So we removed one bracket plus the mollys from the old rack, spackled all the holes, and called it a day. Then, dinner and a segment of "In Treatment". All this was more than I could do a few months ago, so I'm very happy.

I get a warm fuzzy feeling from all these folks meeting up!  :clap;

We had our Solstice party last night and 35 folks showed up. It was good fun! Today I have simply taken the day off. That is a first in a long, long time. I did absolutely nothing productive and it felt GREAT!

I cannot tell you how amazing it is to have the freedom to travel to the States finally...I love it and everything American... I can't wait to come back!
Thank you Chris for being my driver (even if the freeway did scare the hell out of me!!!) and tourguide and meeting Moosemom and hubby Mike was fantastic in an
all American diner something I dreamt about ... eating a Western burger and a hot fudge sundae with the endlesss cups of coffee and have a nice days...could stay forever.
Even when it rained today did an Art museum and some more shopping ...fantastic!
Sadly i fly home tomorrow but what a time I have had. Been great to share it with you folks, knowing after 7 years of difficulties you folks really understand how it feels

Uh, best thing that's happened to me today? Not exactly a competitive field as it's only 10:30 AM. Perhaps I can report back in a few hours. Ice cream social today at my younger son's summer program, and of course the older one wants in because it's ice cream, so he'll attend as well. Gwyn got to work early so he could be there for the start. I have to nip round the corner for a half gallon of ice cream from the shops. I promised to bring strawberry.

Oh, and I know this is in another thread but I am too lazy to find it - I would join you on your horseback ride adventure, Chris. I love horses and have not been on one since.... hmmmm.... well, I am gong to bet our one-year anniversary, so that would be 10 years. Just promise that we'll go on a tour that lets you do more than walk, because I cannot be bothered with those hyper-vigilant, please-don't-sue-us places that will flip out at a canter.

So, if you decide you'd rather not go it alone, let me know. I'm around, at least for another year....

Great day, excersize, nature, my son, swimming, food... cant get much better can it?

Let me know when your back in Chicago and we will. The carriage ride pick up is right next to Northwestern at Michigan and Huron. They start to just wait for people after 5 or 6, but can be scheduled to be there at a certai time if given advanced notice.

SL -63 is not surprising for high altitudes. I admit usually I've seen between -40 and -50, but -63 is not too out of the ordinary. Sorry you hit turbulence - it's to be expected in the summer over that part of the world) and you got through it just fine so it's all good.

Mix day today of events, but since I lost my sunglasses when I was with Sugarlump, I had to try to get a replacement clip. Unfortunately my frames are to old to order parts and I had to order something new. SO I picked out some prescription sunglasses and they pretty much look like my avitar. It was not the solution I wanted especially spending that much money ($414, but cheaper than rx glasses (I have to have added stuff on those)) and they look kick :sir ken; , almost The Matrix movie style....lol

Other than tat, day was a cluster*&^% with getting going, vehicle service, and doctor visit.

I have to admit to being a real cinema snob, but I do love those big alien battle movies!

The best thing that happened to me today?  I love Wimbledon tennis and was appalled to see that NBC wasn't covering Nadal v Murray live, so I listened to the live match coverage on Wimbledon radio.  I just thought it was so cool to be able to listen to live radio from the other side of the world.  Technology has advanced so quickly; I still marvel at being able to fly through the clouds on an airplane.  I always imagine some young Aztec girl gazing up into the sky and wondering what it would be like to fly though the clouds.  It's amazing that I don't have to imagine it because I've actually been up there.

The best thing that happened today was on the way to taking my vehicle to the dealer for service on Tuesday. I beat my dad there! :yahoo; :bandance;  We took two different routes and I turned off the main street way before the route he took whatever which one he took. The next thing I know after turning on the next major street after a couple lights, he was right behind me. Then at some points I slowed down enough so he would get the yellow light  :rofl;  Today was a good day for Ricky Bobby!

Today was a pj day for me as well - well for a good part of it anyway. I did want to go do my usual walk... but it was grey and a bit rainy outside, and my kitty was snuggled up all warm with me on the bed an I just thought "oh hell it's Sunday. I can take a day of" (but I will probably regret it!). On top of that for the first time in a LONG time I put just two bets on 2 races and picked the winner in each one so turned $10 or so into $30 or so. Not muchm, but better than doing my dough. My sister came over in the afternoon and we watched her team play footy - and they won by 9 points which was good for her (unlike my woeful tigers who lost by 103 points yesterday in a performance that was well... I have no words). Anyway..... yeah a pretty quiet day but a good one.

Odd events going on here. Dad woke me up today (1 pm) to ask what I thought about getting a lab or retriever pup and then train it for my needs. I told him we can't just train a dog to do that, it's specialized training procedure. He then asked would you still want a dog and I said yes. So we are going up state tomorrow to look at some lab pups and golden retriever pups at a breeders home 2 hours away on the 4th. I also still will be going for a guide dog so we'll have 2 if I'm accepted.

Wow, such great news from around the world!

Jbeany, that's fantastic! What an ordeal it's been for you.

Billybags, I can relate to what an achievement that is on your husband's part. Glad you got out and got to relax and enjoy!

Des, I am just over the moon for you! You so need and deserve an ally and understanding soul to turn to as you navigate a bewildering-sounding system that few on here can help you through.

Oooo, I have a great one from yesterday!

I went down to Bastille Days just because I felt I could use the exercise and I did not feel right knowing that they were doling out cake and I was not there to grab a piece for the kids. I made it down there, got a tiny piece of cake, and wandered over to get a proper schedule. The local radio station has a booth with the schedules, so I go over there, I am about to ask the woman there a question, but there is another man there before me. She says to him would you be interested in the wine tasting? We are giving away free tickets to the first 6 visitors. You would be number 5.

I plant myself there. This wine tasting costs $25/person, way too high for us, but I would be willing to buy a ticket if I received one for free. Well! She then asks him if he wants Friday or Saturday and hands him FOUR tickets. They keep talking. I am trying to look interested in all of their promotional materials, but it is probably obvious I am just waiting around to be asked about the tasting. He finally leaves. I am ready to engage in inane chatter for as long as it takes for her to offer me the tickets, but thankfully she does so fairly quickly. On the way home, carrying my piece of cake, I phone Gwyn and tell him to call our Fest Friend and see if she can grab her on again/off again fella and go with us. (Our Fest Friend is the one who always rings us up to see if we'll go with her to the various festivals around town.) We have to secure a babysitter, and if our Fest Friend cannot join us, we have a few other couples to ask before we just unload the extra tickets scalper-style. Woo-hoo!

Well, it hasn't happened yet, but today will be a great day because my mom and dad are stopping in for a visit on their way to South Dakota for our family reunion.  I haven't seen them since last summer which was long before I started into all this dialysis stuff.  They will be here overnight and then next week I'll be flying to South Dakota for the reunion itself.

I'm really excited for the reunion.  It's for my dad's side of the family, which doesn't get together often.  The last time we were all together was in 2008 for my sister's wedding.  We are also staying in Custer State Park in the Black Hills, which should be beautiful as long as there are no random forest fires.  Can't wait to see Mt. Rushmore again as well as Crazy Horse.  I haven't been to SD since about 1983, so I'm sure there has been a lot of progress on Crazy Horse since then.

This may seem silly, but I see it as an accomplishment..

I repossessed my brother's cellphone, because he owed me money on the bill.  Since I can't cancel the account, I decided to give it to my mom.  Today, after several attempts, I got my mom's facebook account to work on the phone.. *G*

Riki the beach babe, I'd call that an acomplishment. You took charge of a situation that probably would only get worse (your brothers debts) with you suffering, and hopefully have turned that into a better situation for you and your mom.

I got a letter from the Assistant Disciplinary Counsel of the State Bar of (can't say) agreeing that there is validity to my complaint against my mom's estate attorney, and they are going ahead with their investigation.  It's one thing to try to cheat me, but I bet there are lots of other vulnerable people out there who he has tried to take advantage of, and I couldn't let that happen.  I thought long and hard before lodging a formal complaint because I certainly don't want to endanger anyone's livelihood and reputation, so I was relieved that the Disciplinary Counsel agreed that, based upon the evidence I submitted, there is indeed cause for further investigation.

Life is difficult enough without having people you trusted betray you.  So, this was the high point of my day! :2thumbsup;

Took pup to his first vet and had no problems with him making a mess, with other dogs, shots, nails, and fecal swab. That was so surprising. He just didn't like the kennel cough vaccination through the nose and his butt being sprayed with cleaner. Now we can set him up for puppy school.

The part that affected me personally was the money I won from betting on him to win last week into my team to lose by over 46.5 points (they lost by 62) for a payout around $4. Sweet!  :2thumbsup;

(yes I feel bad betting against my own team like that, but there's love of one's team, and then there's betting for money!!!).

Don't worry - karma got me back when I lost most of my winnings at Ascot & Pontefract in the UK while watching the Tour - so that'll teach me!  :rofl; :rofl; :rofl;)

Whoops - I updated Karol, who posted for the mods, but it must not have made it past that.  I spent all of Friday heaving up my stomach.  By Saturday afternoon, I couldn't even keep water down.  Landed in the local ER Saturday evening, got lots of saline, and then emergency shipped by ambulance to my transplant hospital 2 and a half hours away on Sunday afternoon.  I had an infection in fluid trapped under the mesh they repaired the massive hernia with, plus an illius - or a section of intestine that just wasn't quite ready to return to work after the first surgery.  Yippie.  Finally home yesterday afternoon.

Well, this really pertains to yesterday, which was my birthday, and I had the most wonderful pizza in the world.  And it was about as renally friendly as possible!  It was a thin crust, woodfired, true Neopolitan pizza topped with a few roasted cherry tomatoes, arugula, garlic oil and shavings of asiago.  I know...there were cheese and tomatoes involved, but there wasn't three kinds of melted cheese and a pint of tomato sauce on it, so it was the best I could do.  And my husband bought the the entire "Song of Ice and Fire" trilogy of books plus the new one, "A Dance With Dragons".  So, I have a LOT of reading to get done before "Game of Thrones" returns for season 2 in the spring.

Man, that pizza tasted good. :yahoo;

Today I harvested my first ripe tomato, my first blueberries and my first raspberries!  This is the first year I've grown blueberries and raspberries, and the flavor is so incredibly intense and wonderful!  This is my 4th year with having fresh blackberries, and with all the rain we've had, they are enormous and so fantastically succulent.  It's so nice to be able to have fresh fruit and herbs grown right in your own little suburban garden.  I've got dill, parsley, 4 types of thyme, 4 types of lavender, rosemary and other bits and bobs.  Yum!

Well one biopsy came back negative for skin cancer, and one guide dog facility responded out of 4 and did not disqualify me. However I need to wait for an interviewer to come to my house to approve me for either Jan or Feb classes or tell me what I need to work on before being allowed classes. The administrator already told me something I do need to work on before the interviewer comes to my house and the administrator will be talking to my cane (O&M) instructor about that issue and whatever other information they require.

Now waiting on results from Wednesday's cytoscope.

Waved good bye after a fabulous weekend with a good friend.  No one knows you the people who knew you when you were a kid!  We went to the local art gallery/botanical gardens yesterday, and stayed on for the evening concert.  Garrison Keillor and Prairie Home Companion on their Summer Love tour.  Too sweet - mostly love songs, with the usual Lake Wobegon quirky sense of humor.  (Although hearing Garrison do a duet of Tiffany's "I think we're alone now" was hysterical.)

Today we finally, FINALLY sold our old Pottery Barn Kids bed with trundle for the price we wanted. We bought an amazing bunk bed set at Costco last year at this time, thinking we would easily sell our name brand set for what we paid for those beds. Well, it took a year, and 3 different Craigslist postings before a young woman actually made an appointment to see AND, more importantly, followed through and turned up. Liot was in despair about losing the trundle, but we cannot keep it for the two times a year we have kids spend the night, and that was what really sold it - everyone wanted the trundle, but I made them buy the bed (without mattress) to get it. It's gone! No more time wasters asking inane questions and trying to cut the price even further, no more idiots asking if they can just have the trundle (Can you read?! I said no!). And, I can restore all of the cash that we have had to "borrow" from the kids in emergency situations. Woohoo!!

Hmm... how to describe low tide.. it's kind of a seaweed/dead fish smell.  I think it has to do with plant life that, at high tide, are covered with water, so you can't smell them. But, at low tide, when all you have are mud flats, you can smell it, especially on a hot day, like it was today.

Yummy!

My best thing - I fell asleep almost as soon as I laid down last night.  Yay!  Hopefully this is an end to my pain-killer-withdrawal insomnia.

Just curious, is there a thread for the worst thing that has happened to you today? or something to that effect? Or  is that more for a rant of the day?

My GFR went from 21 to 23. Not much, but, hey, at least it is not going down!!!

Great news, Jean. Every little positive step should be celebrated!

We have an entire week of 'best things'. We went someplace new this year for our holiday, a place I would honestly never guess I would willingly visit - Eagle River, WI. We stayed at this lovely, lovely place by the name of Wild Eagle Lodge. Not luxury, but a nice little two bedroom place with a camp for kids run by employees at the local children's museum. We enjoyed it so much that we extended our stay an extra night. The kids spent most mornings at the camp, which was totally free!! They would do a craft, play some sport, then a nature instruction activity and finally go to the lake or the pool to swim. We gave them a room key and they could come and go as they pleased through the morning. Then there were 3 other programs through the day, an hour session mid-afternoon, an hour session late afternoon, and finally an evening program.

Among our adventures - at the lodge we raced on plasma cars, the boys made their own shirts by spraying them with paint through a water pistol, we played 'are you smarter than a fifth grader' at the on-site pub, had two s'mores sessions round the campfire down by the lake, and went fishing (catch and release) using the complimentary row boats down at the dock. The place was self-catering, so we brought a load of food up, and they had a film library that we were able to borrow from, so we watched a few pics while cooking and eating.

Off-site we visited a local restaurant that boasted over 200 brands of bottled soda, and Gwyn and I tried a Tamarind soda. (Not really worth it, the flavour was too subtle and overpowered by the sugar). Also went hiking in Ottawa National forest (technically in Michigan) collecting rocks (Liot is obsessed with them) and got to see a few deer skipping along. We went to a wild animal park/zoo thing that I expected to bore me to tears, but was actually delightful, although I probably enjoyed it so much because the kids were so excited they could hardly breathe. We bought crackers to feed to the deer, pet rabbits, goats, tortoises, enormous pigs, ferrets, a skunk, a hedgehog, a porcupine, hundreds of parakeets and a variety of other exotics. We also each quickly pet a zebra and the boys fed bottles of 'bear juice' to a pair of black bears (inside cages - I would never have allowed it otherwise, I don't care how tame a place claims an animal is). Gwyn gave half a cracker to an Emu - don't think we were supposed to do that, so we all went running out of there when the thing snapped it out of Gwyn's fingers and swallowed it whole. We could see the shape of the cracker going down the Emu's throat - eep! The most horrifyingly amusing moment came along when Aidan told me that a tortoise was "standing on the other tortoise" and making this really loud noise and peculiar movement and I thought 'Uh-oh. That sounds like...." and my suspicions were confirmed. The kids did not understand what was going on and kept telling the one to get off its 'friend'. I could not compose myself I was laughing so hard because this creature was so LOUD and I guess tortoises do everything slowly because it seemed to take forever. Afterward, the male kept eating crackers from the kids and the boys kept remarking how hungry he was all of a sudden. Huh! Isn't that curious!

Oh, and they were doing this Festival of Flavors in town and we decided to go to the tasting Saturday. There was a children's section where the boys played all manner of games and won prizes, then for $40 the four of us were offered more food than we could possibly consume, plus loads of wines for the adults. It takes a lot for me to refuse cheese samples, but I was ready to pummel anyone who offered me anything edible by the end. It was divine! The local Y had a Zumba Fitness demonstration and I so want to try it. Heaven knows Gwyn and I need to tone down the rampant eating and bring a lot more exercise into our lives. Perhaps I will buy it for the Wii....

So, cariad, you're sayin' the reptile kingdom gets after-sex munchies, too?   ;D

I celebrated my 2-yr kidneyversary at my sister's cottage this weekend by doing very little at all.  We cruised around on the pontoon, watched the kids swim and fish, and sat around the bonfire for hours, just talking. It was perfect!

Finally the stars aligned for me and my kitty paid off dividends :)

A week or two ago I was listening to a UK race and heard CELESTIAL GIRL come from nowhere to win a race. I was thinking, yeah I have to keep note of that one, given my kitty approves of that horse!!!  :rofl; Well, last night I happened to see by chance it again was running around, this time at Epsom. Well, it was considered a reasonable outsider in the race, starting at 11-1, and finishing up at 16-1 by the start of the race. The form of the field was mixed and I figured she had a chance, so I put on a little bit for fun, to back my kitty :)

Started off poorly, running dead last (of 10) for most of the race, then ZOOM!!! straight through the crowd, took the lead and won by 2 lengths !!! WOOOHOOOO!!!!! So, one happy kitty who earned her food for the next week from another beautiful four legged friend on the other side of the planet!!  :rofl; :rofl; :rofl;

Last week, I bought Mario Kart for the Wii, second hand.  I hadn't had a chance to play the game, as the Wii is in the living room, on Mom's tv, and when my nephews were here last weekend, they lost the remote for the VCR, which I need, because my brother set up the Wii through the VCR, and I need to change the input.

So, I spent a half hour flipping couch cushions, crawling on the floor on my belly, looking under couches, the entertainment centre, and a couple other tables in the living room.  I even pulled my brother's toy tractor trailer out of it's berth under an end table to see if it was in the trailer.  No remote, but there was a car in there.  I finally found it behind a stack of dvds on the entertainment centre.

So, I got the game on, then played a few of the characters, and I don't think I've laughed so hard, especially when I fell of the edge, and the characters screamed all the way down, then breathed a sigh of relief when they were lowered back onto the track.

it felt good

Congrats to you and Miss Celeste, Richard.

We are having such a great time playing Disney's version of Dance Dance Revolution. I bought it for the kids years ago for Christmas and they never really understood it and we just had it collecting dust on the shelf. I want to be more active so Gwyn and I tested it out yesterday and wow are we uncoordinated, but it's great for a laugh. I am getting much more skilled if I do say so myself. The boys are in the great room competing right now. There is even a workout mode that will estimate calories burned, but that rather saps the fun in my opinion. I have also started my low glycemic diet, and two days into it I do feel a bit more energetic. Hoping to lose a few pounds and tone up before the meet.

Hey, that's wild, Riki. We both posted about Wii games. Mario Kart is a riot, although I haven't played it in ages. I do find it all a tad stressful when I'm in the midst of a race - but a fun stressful, I guess.

Enjoy!

I have it for the DS and I played it on SNES when it first came out.  I had no idea how hard it would be to keep the cars on the track while playing with the Wii.  I also found Baby Mario and Baby Peach hilarious

When I want a workout, I tend to go to Wii Sports.  I like some of the Tennis training, and I'm not too bad at the Home Run Derby

Wii Sport may be too much of a workout for me. That boxing game - yeow.  :P We do have the Wii Fit but so far I have not got into that. That thing is like that friend everyone has who doesn't realise how insulting they are being, but you sort of suspect that they do realise it but you can't prove it. It has told me that my balance sucks and that my 'true' age is older than my chronological age (not in a good way!)

I did a mile of walking totally blind as part of my training and surprisingly did very well using my cane. Odd thing was I developed pain in my blind eye that was not covered. The guide dog I most likely will go to got a hold of my trainer so hopefully she will do more training each week than every other week.

I would love to have a dog, but I've been told that you need to use a cane for a year before you qualify.  As it is, if I go somewhere unfamiliar, I have to have someone with me.  I don't really need a cane.  I need radar to tell me where the curbs and parking meters are so that I won't walk off or into them.  The amount of times I've fallen off sidewalks is so not funny.
Title: Re: What's the best thing that's happened to you today?
Post by: Chris on August 30, 2011, 10:22:18 PM
Here you do not need to use a cane for a year, just be trained to use one because you may need it on rare occassions with the dog. Then there is the visual field that you must meet to qualify a person. Some only train for totally blind people while others will work with visual impairment if your visual field warrants a dog. Each facility has different admission requirements just like a transplant center.

Stopped at a farmers market I'd never been to before on the way home from class.  I had a tenner on me - figured I could at least get a little bit of fresh fruit to munch this weekend.  They sold tokens at the front that you could put on a Bridge card (what they call the food stamp card here).  Sweet!  They sold them in packs of 20 $1 tokens if you wanted them - and if you took 20, they doubled it, and gave you another $20 worth of tokens.  So I brought home $40 worth of home-grown, organic produce that was picked fresh and local.  I'm going to pig out tonight!  I got raspberries, blueberries, heirloom tomatoes, cherry tomatoes in assorted varieties, sweet corn, peaches, an assortment of fresh greens, and two kinds of eggplant - one batch of baby, one batch regular.  I'm taking some to my sis tomorrow too - way too much to finish by myself!

I'm going to put this as a positive, since I reckon it must be some kind of record. Certainly is for me. LOL

Before work I put in 3 bets at som races here. I had a day of work, training etc and only came to check the results later. all 3 horses in 3 different races, came... FOURTH!!! but wait, there's more... so I knew there was a greyhound running last night, so I decided, no I will not put any money on it, because clearly it's not meant to be. I watched the race though for fun. Little Tiger Cotchin burst out from the box, flew down the track in front of everyone else... ran.. ran.. ran!! WOOT.... until the last part of the race, overtaken by a couple of dogs and ended up in a photo for 3rd place with 2 other dogs. When the photo was sorted out yes, you guessed it, the pooched finished FOURTH!!!! I nearly fell off my chair laughing so hard. And yesterday's date? The 31st - 3+1=4. Yep, I'm reaching. Given that today was sep 1, I had a fun bet on race 4 figuring hey I might actually get a winner..... nope.. not even a place... but NOT fourth!!!

My 12 year nephew and I went to the Air Zoo in Kalamazoo, Michigan yesterday.  It's an airplane museum combined with a number of fun rides and really fun education presentations on how flight works. He rode the flight sims in circles and barrel rolls repeatedly.  I had a lovely time looking at all the restored WWII planes.  The whole back "hanger" is nothing but working trainer planes lined up in a row, followed by the fighters like the Hellcat and the Corsair, and with a transport plane taking up a giant chunk of the middle.  One of the planes went down in Lake Michigan during a practice run and was pulled up after 50 years and completely restored. Totally awesome.

 One of the volunteer docents came up and started chatting with me.  Lovely gentleman in his 80's, who had been volunteering at the museum for ages.  He started talking about how a lot of the planes they had on display had been made in Michigan, some of them at the Willow Run plant by Dearborn/Detroit, that cranked out a fully operational plane ever 50 minutes at the height of the war.  I was telling him about my gram working at Willow Run on the ball-bearing machine, and we were talking about all kinds of historical things.  I'm not a huge history buff, but I do find it all interesting, and I do read a lot more than most.  As we walked back into the hallway to the main building, he pointed out a display of pilot uniforms.
"I don't tell most people your age, cause they don't know who I'm talking about, but I bet you know.  This uniform here was donated by a friend of mine.  He was wearing it when Marlene Dietrich sat on his lap during a performance.  Her autograph is on the inside of the hat still.  Do you know who she is?"

Oh, yeah!   :clap;

Liot seems to be taking to Spanish immersion and if he is homesick while at school, he does not show it nor mention it. It is worlds away from his afterschool program where he spent all of his time for K4, but this school has very involved and extremely friendly parents, and has the 'it takes a village' mentality that I think is so vital. I found out that the mother of Liot's best friend is also vegetarian! Those are a rare breed in Wisconsin, it's nice to have a friend who understands the unique challenges to being a veg in the midwest.

Oh, and the transportation issue - the fact that I am being told that it could take an hour. Another friend seems to agree with me, which after my one friend's tone deaf lecture over it, was quite refreshing. As we passed each other on the way to our cars, he said "Last year it was only around 20 minutes. We're paying for that time they spend sat on that bus." Oh, yes we are, and quite a lot. The afterschool program is going to intervene if necessary.

Liot finished his gymnastics course today and he got to select what to do for free time since he was the best listener. This is unbelievable progress for him. It's been a good few days.

About 4, I wandered downstairs to get my Sunday paper, planning to read it while having brunch.  One of my neighbors had fired up his grill.  He asked me if I liked steak.  Ummm, yeah, of course!  He works for a food distributor and gets free samples all the time.  He gave me a Kobe beef filet mignon steak. I wasted no time whatsoever in firing up my own grill and preparing my brunch.

Oh.My.Heavens.  It was divine - tender enough to cut with a fork.  All I did was rub a little sea salt on it while it warmed up a bit before I grilled it.  (Never put cold meat directly on the flame.  Bad, bad, bad!)  I also had a few roasted baby potatoes and some fresh steamed broccoli with cheddar-bacon sauce.  Yummmm!

The best part was gloating to my brother in law.  He is a raging steak-a-holic and prefers his steak so rare it's nearly still mooing. I sent him a text asking him if it was sacrilegious to cook such a treat until it was well done.  I could hear him whimpering in distress from 30 miles away. (I didn't cook it that much, really, but it's fun to torment him.)

I spent all of last night spinning in circles, trying to find the answer to a legal question. My two law student team members are preparing a motion to enforce a divorce judgment for a client.  The laws and statutes are really clear about what my client is legally entitled to, but have no instructions whatsoever on how, exactly, to go about asking for it when you make a motion before court.  She can get the judgment enforced, legally.  She can get the scummy ex "compelled" to pay.  Yah, nice.  Having an order on paper in your hand isn't the same thing as having paper money in your hand.  I wanted to know how to, or even if we were allowed to, put in a how, and a when, and a set of consequences for not paying.  I finally quit looking after way too much time searching with no results.  My paralegal classes have taught me a lot of formatting a motion and filing it properly with the court, but not so much about what to put IN the motion.
Well, I have a senior law student who has studied law for 3 years so far.  She must have had this in class, so I figured I'd ask her in the morning.

Ha!  She had the same questions and had been doing the same research without finding any answers either.  We went together to the supervising attorney together to find out.

So my best thing was realizing I wasn't as clueless as I thought!

Really enjoyed the talk with my advisor yesterday. Gwyn came with me and I introduced the two of them. It was on the hormone DHEA which my advisor has suggested I look into for possible Ph.D work. I hope Gwyn gets a job so I am able to justify keeping with my Ph.D.

These talks have been quite well attended, maybe because they have started bribing people to go with refreshments. Wine, cheese, water crackers, grapes. Gwyn and I went straight for the wine. I had a small glass of red while chatting with my advisor after the lecture. Gwyn had a giant glass of red, then I poured a glass of white for us both to try and Gwyn finished the whole thing in an apparent "miscommunication". :rofl; Oh well, he did agree to come with me, and the last anthro talk he accompanied me on was about pottery sherds, and I did not follow a single word, so obviously that boded extremely poorly for Gwyn's enjoyment.

We had a great little chat with the professor. Gwyn asked about DHEA's role in Alzheimer's treatment. Not promising, not enough is known. I asked about people without adrenal glands and, in an unrelated question, brain lateralization. These are all extremely interesting subjects to me. As Gwyn said, my advisor was so clearly in his element joking around with his students. We had fun, and the conversation just careened all over the place. :cheer:

Then we were able to give a nice donation to the children's center in town. Two years ago they did a clothing exchange - bring in any unwanted clothing in good condition, and on the appointed day, anyone can grab any item for free, as many items as you want. We loved donating all of Liot's baby stuff two years ago, but for some reason they did not hold one last year. We were just about to give all of our old clothes to charity when they announced the next clothing exchange. A few items we gave away were never worn. Gwyn is volunteering so if there are any items for older boys, I have instructed him to grab them. Last time we got a beautiful denim shirt for Liot, and two basketball shirts for Aidan that I never in a million years would have purchased for him, but he loved them. The denim shirt was in good enough condition to pass along this year. We walked in the door and the receptionist said "wow, you brought an entire closet!" and Gwyn and I both said "the other half's still in the car!" It really has freed up loads of space in our basement.

Oh, and last week I sold the winter ensemble from Gap that saw Liot through two Wisconsin winters. So hard to say goodbye to those outfits that I was used to seeing everyday, but the $25 was nice, and hopefully a great deal for the person who purchased for her little boy.

I had been feeling terrible since dialysis, all day. I took a nap. My roommate woke me up from my nap to ask if I wanted to come along with her to have sushi. I never refuse an offer for sushi.  ;D After that nap and a belly full of sushi, I felt much better.

Yesterday, Halloween, my nurse gave me two of those little Snicker bars and a Hershey bar.  She said dialysis would wash away the potassium.  LOL.  I hadn't had a Snickers, even a tiny one, for over a year, and it tasted really good.  We gave out 350 candies last night before turning off the light.  There were still hundreds of kids roaming the streets like zombies for two hours we closed up.  I live in a nice neighborhood in a city with 50% of the people on government assistance.  They come here for the candy from all across town.  I love the costumes.  Next week I get to go to Disneyland for my 59th birthday.  I love Disneyland.  I was there on opening day in 1955.  It's a family tradition, now, for four generations.

not the best thing, but I did visit the D clinic and joined in the Melbourne Cup "sweep" they do every year.

To explain for those that have no clue. The Melbourne Cup is one of the world's most famous horse races. This year was the 151st running of The "Race that stops a nation" - and indeed it does - in our state we all have a public holiday for the Cup - yes that's right - the day off for a horse race!!! True. Anyway a common practice in workplaces (and dialysis it seems!) is a "sweep" for the race - where you put in say $2 or $5 and get allocated at random one of the horses from the race. If your horse comes 1st, 2nd, 3rd or typically last you get a payout from the pool. Since there are usually 24 horses in the race it can be a bit of money.Anyway it's all in good fun and at least at dialysis everyone would crowed around patient TV's and yell for their horse and it was all good fun. So I vitied the uunit and put my $5 in for this year for fun. I got a dud horse so didn't get tocollect but it was fun nonetheless. I watched the races at home with my sister. Came out about 50% in profit for the day at the end of it all which one can't complain about and the actual Cup itself was one of the closest finishes in history decided on a photo after quite a long time. Very eciting even though my avoured horse ended 8th. lol.

oh yesterday I put a few bucks on a horse named CARIAD - for obvious reasons - no cigar though - sorry!!! :(
