Latest FB Status Updates...

From Brian/Wallyz: Hey everyone. I am still in critical care, hoping to move up to the transplant ward today. Thanks for all the prayers. Kidney is working well, Pancreas alittle less so. Thanks Pastor Craig and Johhny Barbosa for stopping by.

From Dana/Mrs. Wallyz: Brian is staying in CCU until tomorrow for now. He says he thinks he must be getting better because he's getting irritable (back to normal, I say). The pancreas still needs some insulin assistance, but the kidney is working away.

2000 - Started seeing nephrologist on regular basis
Mar 2010 - Started Aranesp shots - well into CKD4
Dec 1, 2010 - Transplant Eval Appt - Listed on Feb 10, 2012
Apr 18, 2011 - Had fistula placed at GFR 8
April 20, 2011 - Had chest cath placed, GFR 6
April 22, 2011 - Started in-center HD. Continued to work FT and still went out and did things: live theater, concerts, spend time with friends, dine out, etc
May 2011 - My Wonderful Donor offered to get tested!
Oct 2011  - My Wonderful Donor was approved for surgery!
November 23, 2011 - Live-Donor Transplant (Lynette the Kidney gets a new home!)
April 3, 2012 - Routine Post-Tx Biopsy (creatinine went up just a little, from 1.4 to 1.7)
April 7, 2012 - ER admit to hospital, emergency surgery to remove large hematoma caused by biopsy
April 8, 2012 - In hospital dialysis with 2 units of blood
Now: On the mend, getting better! New Goal: No more in-patient hospital stays! More travel and life adventures!

Was on in-center hemodialysis 2003-2007.
7 yr transplant lost due to rejection.

   -glaucoma and surgery for that
     -cataract surgery twice on same eye (2000 - 2002). another one growing in good eye

Dana posted this late last night:  Brian was moved out of CCU to room 1766 tonight (17th floor). He walked some down the hallway today and sat in the recliner for awhile. Things are moving forward! He'll be in the hospital for about 10 days and then spending a couple weeks close to it so he can make daily appointments there for IV treatments. He might be home for Christmas presents, though!

This is just the best Christmas news I have heard.  Thank to all who are keeping us updated.   I pray everyday finds him a little better and the kidney and pancreas do their thing.

Another update from Brian!

I am up in the transplant ward. My parents are here, Mike and Jen Grimshaw stopped by. Everything is going well so far. Thanks for all the prayer.

I am happy to report that even major surgery cannot keep Brian down for long!

The latest update from Dana:

Good news - Brian took 3 walks today and got his NG tube out! Bad news - I almost barfed in the elevator when standing behind a lady with all her hair in one big funky matted dreadlock.

Much better to walk around w/o the NG tube. Mine had to stay in longer, glad Brian is doing much better than my experience and a couple other members.

No kidding, RichardMel. i'll work on it.Creatnine has gone from 7.29 before the surgery to 7.24, to 4.98 to 3 to 2.21.  BUN is down to 37  I'm still on supplemental insulin, because I am taking a lot of prednisone.  I finally got good sleep last night, which was amazing.  This is hard, but I am already enjoying not dialyzing.

Hey everyone - I visited Brian in the hospital today.  He says he feels like he's been hit by a mack truck, and is having a hard time with the recovery, but understands that it will take some time.  He is very thankful for everyones support and prayers!  To all of you who have been through the k/p transplant, please let him know how your experience went!  I know he's on a lot of meds (okay, duh!) in hopes that his body doesn't recognize his new organs as "foreign".  Here's hoping the greencard process goes smoothly, and that they pass the citizenship test with flying colors!   :)

Karen, tell him that even with all the complications I went through and am still recovering from, I still feel sooooooo much better now than I did on dialysis.  I was on the run yesterday doing errands and chores for 13 straight hours.  If I had done that while still on dialysis, I'd have spent the next day puking my guts out, and unable to get out of bed.  Now - I just slept in an extra hour or so, and got up and did more chores!  Once they get his meds adjusted, he's going to feel great!

Karen, does the hospital have e-mail cards or email to patients?

Well hopefully they gave Brian a small pillow to hold over the abdomen when laughing (Hurts like hell), coughing, sneezing), or well even passing gas that doctors want you to do before eating solid foods. As far as my experience has gone, I have no regrets of getting a transplant. All my problems seem mostly with after care/ lack of, but would do it again because I felt so much better. The more walking the better even though it can get boring due to the same scenery.. When allowed to eat, start off slow, build your way up, the meds may make you  :puke; when it comes to eating solid food again.

Eye impairments and blindness in one eye began in 95, major one during visit to the Indy 500 race of that year
   -glaucoma and surgery for that
     -cataract surgery twice on same eye (2000 - 2002). another one growing in good eye
     - vitrectomy in good eye post tx November 2003, totally blind for 4 months due to complications with meds and infection

Diagnosed with ESRD June 29, 1999
1st Dialysis - July 4, 1999
Last Dialysis - December 2, 2000

Kidney and Pancreas Transplant - December 3, 2000

Cataract Surgery on good eye - June 24, 2009
Knee Surgery 2010
2011/2012 in process of getting a guide dog
Guide Dog Training begins July 2, 2012 in NY
Guide Dog by end of July 2012
Next eye surgery late 2012 or 2013 if I feel like it
Home with Guide dog - July 27, 2012
Knee Surgery #2 - Oct 15, 2012
