It was brought to my attention by a member (sluff) that he wondered if it was possible to have a "Annual Meet" Now I know it may be impossible for some but I know for example we have a few Californians here on the board. I would like the first meet to be in California. Since I would be the one hosting it. For those who could not make it I would have web cams streaming the "meet" so our members from all over the world could watch and be a part of it some how. We could have a BBQ or a meet up at a restaurant or a conference room or both. This is nothing tentative yet. Just want to get an idea of anyone would be interested in such an event. I may even be able to get "guest speakers" (related to the dialysis industry) to come (just a thought) Again I know for some members this event would be impossible but for those that could come it would be a fun time. And for those who could not make it, we would stream it on the net.
Please speak up and give me some ideas if you would travel to such an event or if you have ideas.

So lets gets some tentative information going for the First ANNUAL IHD Meet(s)
So far we have 3 possible meets:
California Meet
Australia Meet
Ohio Meet
(Any other possible meets? Please reply in this thread if you are willing to be a event host.)
I think late August 2007 is a good time, most likely on Saturday.

After see how much fun, Susie and I had at our "Mini-Meet" we definitely need to get a Annual Meet going for our members. So please reply here if you are interested in becoming a part of this. I promise you it will be one hell of a time. You have not lived until you meet goofynina in person. ;)

I think that's a really cool idea. We'd definitely be up for doing it one year (not this one though). I'd love to see the meeting via webcam though.

I'm thinking an online thing might be easier for most people like something in the chatroom or maybe something that would involve video as well. Netmeeting, Skype, Paltalk, Yahoo, all these could be used to make this happen. You wouldn't have to do it just once a year, it could be more frequent. When I travel there has to be something really good at the other end like history, exotic landscapes, or a beach. Online might be the way to go here.

I am also from southern cali. I would definitely go. I think a webcam type thing would be cool but just would be really nice to see everyone in person. Makes a big difference in forming more personal bonds. :cuddle;

Well we are already online, and not many have joined the "Skype" user list we have here already. From the PM's I've received and the replys here we already have like 7 people that would come. If we can get at least 10 people it would be a good 1st annual meet. Also don't you live in So.Cal livecam? So you wouldn't have to travel much. But a more frequent online meet would be nice using even just the "dialysischat" chat room. We just need to work on some schedules.

What about a "mini-meet " in Australia for all the members down under, possibly on a Weekend so it doesnt interfere as much for dialysis schedules, could meet in Sydney or Melbourne, etc any other Aussies interested speak up or forever hold your peace............................................

Wow guys this is looking GOOD! So far we have members who are interested in a California, Ohio, And Australia MEET! We could do it on the same day or about the same time and we could have each "area host" video tape the event then I would host the videos here and we could all share in the event.
Lets keep it up guys! Keep the ideas rolling in. This could actually happen and maybe we can get some "local press" coverage.

Have you thought about the area and the place? Catered or uncatered? Too hard to potluck it, but we could do that since we all eat pretty much similar things due to renal diet. I am up for most anything. You could ask Lori Hartwell where she gets places at Renal Network.

Well each "area leader" would be in charge of his or own menu. For the California meet I would think a B.B.Q. would be fun, I have a mexican meat market where I get marinated chicken and carne asada to die for. Also Goofynina asked me if family could come and of course the members could bring their family, the more the merrier. I would love to get Lori Hartwell to come to the California meet she is an amazing woman, my son and I recently met her.

Well the meets won't most likely be until the new year. We have a lot of planning to decide and with this time of year with the holidays coming up it may not be a good time until after December.

The last week in June is good for us. Almost any year. I am off of school June 15.

Depending on what time of the year, I might be able to make the Ohio meet. Family wants to try to go to Florida this coming spring or summer. How far from Pittsburgh are you devlinswife?

Yes I have Lori's email, we have spoken several times. She is even a sponsor of this site. Also as I mentioned a few posts back, I would see what I could do to get "local" press coverage. Nothing is set in stone everything is still in just the "ideas" stage it may be as simple as a small BBQ or renting a hall. This is will take some major planning but I think it can be a real nice annual event.

I really don't know how many members are in Ohio or in the surrounding states, but if they are in the Ohio area and are interested in the event I am sure they will post here. Lets wait and see how many people post here and go from there. :thumbup;

I am not "in" ohio but ohio is within range for me. I really can't aford to make it out to cali although it would be nice to finally go there.

An annual meet. That would be cool! ! ! ! :clap; I could possibly get to Ohio. If I can drive to Houston from Kansas and back. I could surely get to Ohio. Would be nicer if it was closer thou. I'm still paying on my treatments in Houston for a month of dialysis last February.
I'm always asking my docs and nurses if there is anyone my age on dialysis. I would love to meet people around my area. But there never is. >:( :'(

26? There is a guy in my unit around your age. First time I was on dialysis I was 16. Don't feel so bad. Just because it is less common for younger people to be on dialysis doesn't mean you are the only one. We're out there ;) :grouphug;

I do know that if any of you are interested in staying at a motel while here, our town has the Ramada and they always have specials with dinner and a nights stay and are very reasonable and usually do group discounts if any of you are interested. I think the first meet will be very simple because a lot of members may not have much time to visit due to dialysis schedules which is one of the hurdles I am trying to address for the future meetings, I have this master plan in my head of how elaborate I'd like this to become but it is going to take one step at a time. I appreciate your enthusiasm. :)

But I don't have a car or hardly any money as I live pay cheque to pay cheque (yes that is Canadian for check :P ). Plus I have dialysis M/W/F and I work T/TH and Sunday is the day I spend with my mom. So I only have Sat free and with getting off dialysis at 9pm I sleep in :P

I tend to be highly stressed .. this is why I don't do as much as let's say .. umm... Epoman lol :P
I tend to always be nervous when there is nothing to be nervous about and feel anxious all the time (people sometimes catching me wringing my hands a lot and chewing on my lip :P and a pace a lot!)

I could also join in via a webcam if it's in the States. For me to go there it would have to be in Belgium (yeah, I know, keep dreaming) or at least in Europe and not too far like the UK. But if it's next year hopefully I'll be transplanted and then anything is possible!

Oh I can see that happening :) Even if it is only just people from Western US or even if just you, I want to see the pics from the event! :2thumbsup; Is there any chance if it is a huge gathering of it being webcast? Either way, I won't be able to attend.

Well, if there is going to be a lot of people watching then a regular web cam won't be able to handle the task. Might I'd suggest an IP Cam for this event? Also epoman, what kind of bandwidth do you have on your home broadband connection? Because your going to need a lot of bandwidth if there is going to be this many people viewing.

I think late August is good too, that is if A-Fib hasn't taken me yet. (sorry Susie, just a possibility). The California meet will be at my house or a location like, Tito's or both we can caravan over to Titos. :o We can schedule the different meets together. For Example the Aussie meet can be on the same day as the California meet, obviously at different times. I would want each meet planner to make sure he/she video tapes the event so it can be hosted here on IHD.

Sorry Buckeye - not in the budget this year! I'm spending all my spare cash to get to Ann Arbor for the transplant appointment, and probably to get to Traverse City to train on a Nxstage.

I know the dates are not set yet, but I seen they are hovering around late Aug 2007. That's great news, b/c it gives me time to see if I can get some money together and be able to make it. However this question determines which meet I could possibly go to. I would love to go to the one in Cali since a lot more people will be attending that one, however Cali is very far from Iowa and even further to a person like me with no transportation. :lol; So, if someone could possibly throw out some possible dates in Aug we might have this thing... I can look see at my kids school schedule and see what I can do, b/c my kids start school here in August.

Hmmm..wouldn't work for me. We have an annual camping trip/family reunion Aug. 11 - 19. I have missed it the last 2 years because of scheduled transplants that didn't happen, so I am really looking forward to going this year! It is in northern Michigan, about 3 1/2 hours north of where we live - unfortunately in the opposite direction of Ohio!

so it is just for the weekend of the 13th and wont be going into the following week. i just dont want to have to do dialysis out there. if i can go, my grandparents will be doing an exchange with their time share so i will be getting a room that way. so u wont need to count me for the room rate. i will just need to know the hotel every1 will be staying at.
but right now i am going to get on map quest to see how long it will take to drive. noway am i getting on a plane. :-\

OMFG....damn, that is a long drive. Mapquest says about 17 hrs, 1184 miles. Looks like I will have to leave right after dialysis friday morning just to get there by a decent time Saturday. CRAP! ! !

There's lazy, and then there's Las Vegas lazy.
In increasing numbers, Las Vegas tourists exhausted by the four miles of gluttony laid out before them are getting around on electric "mobility scooters."
Don't think trendy Vespa motorbikes. Think updated wheelchair.
Forking over about $40 a day and their pride, perfectly healthy tourists are cruising around Las Vegas casinos in transportation intended for the infirm.
You don't have to take a step. You don't even have to put your drink down.
"It was all the walking," 27-year-old Simon Lezama said on his red Merits Pioneer 3. Lezama, a trim and fit-looking restaurant manager from Odessa, Texas, rented it on day three of his five-day vacation, "and now I can drink and drive, be responsible and save my feet."
The Las Vegas Strip is long past its easily walkable days. Casinos alone are nearly the size of two football fields. That doesn't count the hotel rooms, shopping malls, spas, convention centers, bars and restaurants.
And that's just inside. For tourists who plan to stroll from one big casino to another, there are crowds, construction sites and long stretches of sun-baked sidewalks between.
A tourist could accidentally get some exercise.
"We're seeing more and more young people just for the fact that the Strip has gotten so big, the hotels are so large," said Marcel Maritz, owner of Active Mobility, a scooter rental company whose inventory also includes wheelchairs, crutches and walkers.
Most of those using the scooters are obese, elderly or disabled. But many are young and seemingly fit.
The number of able-bodied renters has grown in the past few years to represent as much as 5 percent of Maritz's business, he said. The company, which contracts with some casinos, has a fleet of about 300 scooters.
"It makes it a lot easier for people to see everything," he said.
At full throttle the scooters open up to about 5 mph, though crowded sidewalks allow little opportunity for such speeds. They can go anywhere wheelchairs can — elevators, bars, craps tables — but are banned from streets. They come with a quick operating lesson, an instruction booklet, a horn and a basket.
"At first, I figured it was for handicapped people, but then I saw everybody was getting them. I figured I might as well, too," Lezama said.
Las Vegas has other transportation options, although each has its problems. The Strip is regularly clogged with cabs and drive-in tourists. A double-decker bus system, dubbed the Deuce, often gets stuck in the mess. A $650 million monorail with stops at eight casinos has been plagued by poor ridership, perhaps because it runs behind the resorts, well off the Strip and out of sight.
Police and casino workers often use bicycles.
Some find the notion of using a device intended for disabled people unethical.
"It's the same principle as parking in a handicap spot," Mike Petillo, 64, a disabled tax accountant who recently visited from New York City.
Several hotel bell desk workers — who handle most of the rental requests from tourists — said they try to discourage people who do not appear to need the scooters from renting. But refusing the self-indulgent is not really an option.
"You can't really discriminate against anybody," said Tom Flynn, owner of Universal Mobility. "We don't require a prescription or an explanation of why they need it."
Michelle Bailey, a slender, apparently healthy 22-year-old, used a scooter to get around a recent pool tournament at the Riviera hotel-casino. "Four-inch heels," she explained with a laugh, pointing to her lipstick-red pumps.
But Troy Burgess, a 21-year-old optician visiting from Detroit, said he considers it "immoral" for an able-bodied person to rent wheels. And not only that, but "you probably wouldn't pick up too many chicks on that scooter."

people don't "see" you when you use one of those scooters. i had to rent one the last time i went to disneyland. because of the heat, i had an asthma attack and couldn't walk more than 2 feet without having to stop and wheeze for 5 minutes to catch my breath. it was wonderful to have a way to get around, but people kept walking right in front of me. they saw me if i was sitting still. but it didn't register if i was moving that i could run them over.

Our 4 wheel-drive, biodiesel-fueled vans fit a maximum of 13 passengers and we could accommodate your group in two separate vans. We could also arrange to have your group together in a chartered bus for a higher price, if that would be preferable. Is it important to your group to travel in one vehicle?
The West Rim is a 10 hour tour and the drive is about 3 hours each way. The price per person for the West Rim is $166 for adults and $146 for students & children. This includes all fuel costs, professional driver guides, entrance to the Hualapai Reservation at Grand Canyon West, 2 view points, BBQ lunch on the rim, and view of the world famous Skywalk. Tickets for the Skywalk are $25 per person and may be purchased in advance to avoid waiting in long line, just let us know how many people would like to take the walk. We would keep the extra 6 seats in our vans available to the public, unless you would rather have a private tour, in which case we would charge an extra fee of $650 to close the vans to your group only. The Grand Canyon trip has hit a snag. The company that answered me does not have wheelchair accessibility in their vans. Now what?

Lunch is not included in the price quoted, for the south rim, but it can be for your group if requested for an additional charge.
Our vans are not wheelchair accessible.
For a small group of 5 to 8, there is not problem, the price is based on the van rate.

I'm still working on the hotel. I put another call in and I'm waiting on a return call from a couple of hotels.
Has anyone ever stayed or had any experience with Sam's Town? They seem to be reasonable in cost. PM me.

RE: sam's town. from the on line pictures from more than one site, it looks like a fairly nice place, with everything anyone could possibly want. it is however 6 miles from the strip, my question would be how convenient or inconvenient is it going to be to get around. do they have transportation from the airport (not terribly fond of the cost of a taxi) will we be able to get to the olive garden easily or are we going to change that.

The bus is way cheaper then a taxi, and can take you to the strip. Sam's Town is on Boulder Hwy and Flamingo, so you get on the Flamingo bus, and get off at Las Vegas Blvd (The Strip)... and there ya go, your on the strip. Walk where you want to go, or get on the Strip bus and ride there if it's way at the other end. ;D
And as for the Airport, again, if you don't wanna take a taxi, the bus goes to the airport also... take it to Flamingo, get off and take the flamingo bus to Boulder Hwy. :)
As for the Olive Garden, There is one 4 miles from Sam's Town, again, the bus can get you there.
Just some thoughts. :)

That's what I thought. Thanks. The trouble is the date. The Hotels won't deal much. Sams town is the least expensive during the week but a little high on the weekend so I'm going to contact them to see if they will budge on their weekend rate. The guy from the Rio has not returned my calls.

The rate for the tower would be $82 per night plus tax for a two night total of
$180.40 including tax. The Pavilion rate would be $57 per night plus tax for a
grand total of $125.40. These rates are based on single or double occupancy.
The rates for Sunday thru Thursday would be $46 per night plus tax in the tower
and $35 in the Pavilion.
The group would also receive a complimentary funbook per person which includes a
$5.00 dining certificate, $5.00 in free slot play plus other valuable coupons.

This is the best I've found to date. Hotel is 4 miles from the Olive Garden.
