My kidneys were in too poor of shape to do a biopsy, but I believe that there were 4 contributing factors to my renal failure.  1- Diabetes type 2.   2- High blood pressure.  3- Working conditions (I worked at a chemical company for 22 years and had frequent, direct contact with many solvents. The Material Safety Data Sheets state that many of them can cause kidney disease by inhalation, especially if you are predisposed to it already).   4- NSAID drugs. I had something called Cluster headaches for about 3 months several years ago and I was taking NSAIDS (Motrin, Advil, Aleve, Excedrin, etc...) like candy day and night trying to relieve the pain (which was excruciating! The worst pain I ever had in my life. They can be 100 times worse than a migraine). 

     These were all before I knew the side effects or that I had any kidney problems. I was only diagnosed about 1 1/2 years ago.

Mine was caused Hydronephrosis. Which caused by my enlarged prostate blocking flow and having it back up into the bladder, then into the kidneys. (I guess)  It was a very slow process. I never had the sensation of having to urinate but not being able to etc.

I don't know why I have fsgs, either.  The prevailing theory is that my pregancy in 1991 was the catalyst.  My son feels bad because he thinks he caused it.

Strange, because had i not had my son, i wouldnt know i had kidney failure.

Mike wouldn't have known he had kidney failure too, he had an alcohol related seizure when he was 19 or 20, and then when he was in hospital they scanned his liver passed the kidneys and woah, they originally thought he had PKD cause the dark spots looked like cysts. The dark spots were actually holes!!
But the cause of the kidney failure was strep throat when he was 3 or 4 years old.

Hay guys....apparently mine was caused by allergic reaction to an antibiotic (amoxicilin) not sure on the spelling on that....neph said it's a one in several million chance....sigh....oO(should have put a lottery ticket on that day)

Reflux. Diagnosed and corrected when Sandra was six, but the scarring on her kidneys from repeated infections eventually caused her kidneys to fail...

For 13 years the diagnosis was glomerluonephritis of unknown origin but a lot of research on my part turned up something interesting, lithium causes kidney failue an I took lithum for about 4 years. Now I know exactly my kidneys failed.

Dyes they used to look to see if my father had ulcers is what caused his kidney failure.

My husbands was a kinked ureter since birth which caused the kidney to not drain and become a cyst (from what they say) that then caused high blood pressure and killed his other kidney.

My husband was originally told FSGS and then later Bergers.  I'm wondering if this was in anyway related to the time he spent in Vietnam and may have been subjected to Agent Orange. . . .

Hubby's Neph's at the hospital were "puzzled & fasinated" by his ability to have walked through the ER door due to his cret. level being at almost 20! They finally figured (after a dye test) that he was "most likely born" with a defect in one (or both??) kidney valves (he's 33 & it's just now being noticed)....I'm still trying to decifer all the medical terms, so I'm not sure what it's called exactly. I do know that he has high blood pressure & has been taking meds for that along with shots to control his psoriasis....not sure if docs are right....they just didn't seem that convincing! lol

I have IgA Nephropathy so I checked IgA glomerulonephritis which I think is the same thing even though I can't pronounce it. 

BTW, if I'm not mistaken Berger's Disease is also the same thing.

I am a little confused. My doctor tells me that IgA Nephropathy is not the same as Bergers Disease but when I look it up all the medical websites say they are the same thing. I think I am going to ask a different doctor. I voted Bergers Disease just encase he is wrong.

I just talked to my doctor and he cleared up the confusion. I was confusing Berger's Disease with Buerger's Disease. I was just mispronouncing the disease the whole time. So yes, Berger's disease is IgA Nephropathy.

idiopathic membranous nephritis causing nephrotic syndrome.  Ruled out were secondary to tumor and  diabetic causes.A second opinion doc, Dr. Sherlock Holmes, did even more detective work and ruled out tropical diseases and TB infection.  Idiopathic = that old bumper sticker:  "S*** HAPPENS"

The drs. have never come to a firm conclusion why my kidneys are failing. ( One does not work at all and has shrivelled up, the other works at 15-20%) I may have been something I was born with; an injury as a child (both undiagnosed until now); it could be because of the high blood pressure that developed out of the blue. They aren't even sure if the BP caused the kidney failure or the kidney failure caused the high BP!
I have my own suspicion that the drs. say is also a possibility:  I think it was caused by taking Bextra. I had a torn rotator cuff in my right shoulder and was taking Bextra for several months by the time they pulled it off of the shelves.

That's how I found out about the Bextra. I had just refilled my prescription, came home & got on the computer and there was an email about it. I printed it out and took it back to the pharmacy. They hadn't even been notified yet!
