Enlarged prostate blocked urine from passing which backed up damageing my kidneys. 3 TURP operations in one year to finally get things flowing good again. No cancer or anything else, just enlarged prostate.

Just read through every one of these posts. So many people have been through so much. Sure puts things in perspective for me.
I have been diagnosed with uromodulin-associated kidney disease which is a subgroup of familial juvenile hyperuricaemic nephropathy (FJHN). My mother had kidney failure of unknown origin and died after 5 years on dialysis (oh how she hated dialysis). But since she was the only one in the family with it I was shocked when I was diagnosed. They did a genetic test to confirm that I have a mutation on the umod gene. My neph says he thinks it's way underdiagnosed. Usually it begins in childhood and usually people have gout. Neither of these have happened to me (or my Mom) and I am thankful that I was blessed with ignorance until my 60s. I'm in Stage 4 CKD now.
Very interesting how many people have rare causes of their kidney disease.

In August (2 and a half months ago) I was in South East Asia and was diagnosed with Henoch-Schoenlein Purpura. It worked fast and has so far destroyed 80% of my kiddney functioning.
Before that I was fit/active/and healthy.

In my case everything inmune or other kind of disease has been discarded, I don't know if this qualifies as idiopathic?
IF SOMEONE HAD SOMETHING SIMILAR, I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW YOUR CASE!
So well, I'm a 22 year old Colombian man. Never had any health problem, slim, into sports, semi vegetarian, perfect blood pressure until last time I checked before getting the failure (checked it on September 2010 and got the failure at late february 2011) no diabetes, no nothing.
I was studying in Prague, Czech Republic, having a perfect life and feeling fine. Near the end of February of last year I got a cold, which ended up in an intense sore throat. Two weeks later after losing appetite I went to the medical center, there they made me some tests during two days. In the first day they concluded I had a bacteria and told me to return on the next one, that's when they discovered that creatinine was 5,8 and I had some conditions such as hiponatremia so they sent me for hospitalization. While hospitalized they discarded all diseases, and found small kidneys by ultra sound. Biopsy wasnt made. I was treated with prednisone, to which creatinine went down. When I returned to my country, here they suspended the prednisolone and the creatinine started to go higher once again, plus I got proteinuria. Eventually leading to dialysis..
A year later while waiting for miraculous recovery or transplant, I can only say that no one knows the cause. At least I keep urinating normally, so I dont have fluid restrictions, nor need blood pressure medications.
My theory is, that a month and a half before I got that flu, something happened to my kidneys since I had to wait outside in the street for about 3 hours at night at -8 degrees. Somehow I think that such cold could have caused a circulation problem which eventually led to many nephrones diying. That would also explain in part why during late January and February I was feeling so "lazy" when it was probable that it wasnt lazyness, but simply hemoglobin going down :/

CatonTheRoof - Is it possible you had strep throat? Sometimes it is not diagnosed, but I have read where it can lead to CKD.

After having a liver transplant the Dr gave me Prograf as one of my immunnos. I stayed on it for 5 years when they switched me to Rapamune. They said the Prograf was causing kidney damage. I have been a diabetic since 2000 but didn't start insulin until 2 1/2 years back. Most likely a combination of both. I don't think that I would have gotten CKD if I only had the diabetes.

perhaps I got step throat, as during most of the time I associated it with the sore throat infection I had during two weeks prior to being hospitalized.
But if so, how did the steptrococus left by himself?

In my case when they did the first ultrasound I was amazed to find out that the kidneys were small already. Like, how come? always a healthy person and then boom! that just happened.
Lesson for life: Whenever I get a sore throat, or someone like my gf or children in the future, I'll tell them to go to a doctor asap lol.

I put obstruction, ans was surprised at how few picked that. Is it that rare? I was only partially obstructed from scar tissue that slowed flow down, so no telltale pain...also my nephrologist said people like me often develop chronic pyelonephritis, which I have, which has hastened my decline, for sure. He assumed that was the problem until the CT Scan (? I think) showed the poor flow.

Hi, well i don't think my cause is there, ive never been given a term for it. I guess congenital disorder. I was born with one imperfect kinda scarred and shrivelled kidney, also without a bladder but they built me one of those. Told my parents i'd die when born tho, that scarred shrivelled kidney has given me 30yrs and a beautiful boy and gorgeous baby girl, so there doctors
In 8 weeks i'll be getting my dad's kidney, and if things go well should have more function than i've ever had in my life
Will prob be bouncing off wallls after living all this time on 40%, then 30, then 28, then 23, then 17, then 10, now 8.8% (The kids did it lol )

I have idiopathic retro perritoneal fibrosis a mass of tumors that forms around organs, tumors encased my ureters and caused right kidney to fail in 2009, left kidney has very small amount of function , I have stents in my ureters to keep them open i have the stents changed every 3 months.I have had the stents changed 18 times so far. I have been on dialysis since April 2, 2012.

I was told that I had FSGS and that it was caused by a combination of issues. I had an allergic reaction to morphine and also type 2 diabetes which contributed. Who knows. All I really know is I woke up one day and was unable to control my limbs, went to the hospital and was sedated to do tests and woke up 4 days later on dialysis. I had been told 3 years earlier that my kidneys were failing but that it was not really that bad and could be controlled with dietary changes. I guess it was worse than originally thought.

My kidneys shut down because of a Diabetes drug I was put on. All blood work showed good kidney function and with in a few month on Byetta my kidney stopped.
My best advice is if anyone knows of someone being given this drug tell them that insulin and diet are the safest options. The funniest part is I now control the blood sugar levels with just diet and my blood sugars have been perfect.

Tony's failed due to reflux which was undiagnosed for a long time, but the chronic kidney infections caused by the reflux were diagnosed and treated. How someone somewhere didn't question why he was getting kidney infection after kidney infection, I just don't know. But 11 years of back to back infections took his toll. His native kidneys are 5.2cm and 5cm because they could never develop as he grew due to all the infections and obviously don't work.

when i first found out i had kidney failure, there was too much damage for them to determine a cause from the biopsy. but the transplant center decided they think i have FSGS, but they cant say for sure. but i have never been told anythign except they dnt know.
