10 years on and off dialysis

« Reply #100 on: December 22, 2013, 08:02:11 AM »

Had our renal unit bbq and knees-up this arvo. I am stuffed, figuratively and literally!

Sounds good Galvo our renal unit never does any socialising or get togethers at all. Admittedly a bbq in December might be tricky but a day trip or a coffee morning would be nice!

Really Sugar?  I know that A (AKPA) used to arrange get togethers and occasional trips for the dialysis patients and those from the satellite units. At least, that was the impression I got but I could be wrong.

The nurses and members of the local Lions club gave up a Sunday a couple of weeks ago and paved our wee back yard, and we now have a great bbq area. We had a grand turn-up; a couple of the local taxi drivers voluntarily brought in those of our wheelchair-bound comrades who were up to partaying. Boss' husband was the chef, serving up steaks and snags. Nurses brought in heaps of home-made salads. There was ample beer, wine and soft drink as well as chippies and lollies. One of our Keralan nurses has recently given birth to a gorgeous little girl and she brought her along, and that was a show stopper! And I nursed the baby!!!!

Because i dialysis at a satellite unit, there is only 20 patients max and a rota of regular staff plus 2 HCA's. Even the main unit doesn't do much to socialise... except once a year for an AGM!!!

We need to get together more off machine  :clap;

What's past is prologue

« Reply #104 on: February 15, 2014, 08:51:03 AM »

Last night I helped my older son pack up for a trip called "PGL" which stands for Parents Get Lost. He and a couple hundred other Year 7s at his school are camping for the weekend. We had to make an emergency trip to Cotswolds Outdoor for trail boots and a mad dash to Debenhams for a cheap watch.

Said goodbye to him this morning and Gwyn drove him to the school where he immediately found his best friend and cabin mate. They boarded the coach together and 2 hours later made it to the camp site (general updates are available via the school website). The kids were not allowed to bring any electronics which is wonderful except I really want to ring Aidan and find out how he's getting on.  :(  Secondary school has been such a leap forward for him in terms of self-reliance. This is his first overnight trip with school, and is a symbol to me that leaving home is right around the corner.

The three of us have no real plans for the weekend - we are burnt out. Dyl is having a friend over tonight so that the other boy's parents can have a late Valentine's celebration, but other than that I see a weekend of glorious laziness before us.  :)

Oh! My son's friend is here and all I can hear is raucous giggling, the kind of "can't-breathe-think-I'm-going-to-puke" laughter that I cannot get enough of. Best, best sound in the world!

"PGL" which stands for Parents Get Lost.

Ha ha, love that! And despite having been schooled in England, and having worked in the education sector since 1997, I had NO idea that was the affectionate name for PGL.

*sigh* - I am so ignorant!

Blokey woke up feeling poorly this morning so I'm playing nursemaid to his sniffles.

Hey, you could always get him back and say " sniffles are like depression, --its all in your head".

My daughter, her boyfriend and my two grand children Leila aged 3 and Oscar 12 months are coming Thursday afternoon for the weekend.  ;D
Grandma's cupboard is now full of child friendly treats, little yoghurts and ribena!
And some new toys...

I love getting a chance to play Granny (as they don't live that close) the weekend will be chaotic but wonderful. Hopefully the weather won't be too bad.

This weekend, we will be celebrating my father-in-law's 80th birthday amid another batch of snow.  I think we've had quite enough for this year, but Mother Nature obviously does not!

Next weekend (March 8th), my husband will be participating in a Polar Plunge to benefit Special Olympics.  He misread the website when he signed up and thought it was at the END of March not the BEGINNING.  He is beginning to regret his choice after looking at the 10-day forecast but I told him he' can't wimp out now!   :sir ken;

Am having a cheese and wine party Friday night for a few friends. It's the first social event I have hosted for a long while, not having been very well.
It's good to feel like entertaining again.  :bandance;
And cheese and wine is pretty simple. I've told all the guest to bring their favourite cheese. We are supplying french bread, crackers, cheese straws and chutney. Some grapes and celery. And olives!
Open a few bottles of wine, water and apple juice and chuck in the ice bucket... Put some music on, light the brazier outside for smokers...
Home and dry :)

This Saturday is the Illinois chapter of the National Kidney Foundation's annual Living with Kidney Disease all day seminar.  I've gone two years in a row and am going again this year.  It will be nice to be able to stand up as a transplant recipient at the opening reception.   ;D

  It used to be called Living With Transplantation but apparently now only the kidney folks are invited.  Hmm.....

We have a food and country fayre in town Saturday and Sunday. Lots of free samples, great food, interesting things to buy and watch. My sister does a flyball/dog agility ring for dog owners.
Archery, birds of prey and live folk music.
Me? I just go for the strawberries and cream and sunshine  :2thumbsup;

Well, I got crapped on for that one.  The NKF really did bad job with this year's seminar.  No acknowledgement of those who had a transplant, poorly prepared speakers, misinformation being given out.  I bailed after lunch with another girl who I had met at a transplant support group here in our area.  We both found better things to do for the rest of the afternoon.  I went to a local yarn shop and spent an obscene amount of money on yarn for a project that I've had my eye on for a while.

This past weekend, we went to Detroit to visit an elderly gentleman who has been a friend of my husband's for the last 22 years.  This guy is a medical miracle.  Used to chain smoke, now he's down to about one every couple of hours because he can't smoke in his home any more.  I saw him put down at least a full juice glass of brandy over the course of an afternoon with no seeming ill effects.

This gentleman is 93 years old.  As he said to me "God forgot about me.... I guess I'll live forever."  And I believe him.

Easter holiday at last. This last half-term seemed particularly long somehow. I can just tell the boys are at their limit and desperately need a break. They sing with the opera star tomorrow, then have the usual rugby football on Sunday, and then they can have a good, long lie-in. I think my brother-in-law is coming by Sunday night. House is such a wreck ('cause we bought it that way and have barely started the renovations!) but it will give us an excuse to go out.

I actually went outside for a while today.  Neighbors walk-behind yard vacuum had leaked all the fuel out the carburetor so I took it apart, cleaned and adjusted it for him.  First one so far this year.  I take care of all the neighbors small engines, it gives me something to do.  I still miss working.

I don't get around a lot, within the next couple of months, or sooner I hope, the VA is going to repair my left shoulder again.  They think it is a torn rotator this time.  Then it will be way past time to open my right heel and take out this very painful irritating bone spur.  Hopefully afterwards it won't be too long so I can walk half normal again.  There is a tremendous amount of sticks in the yard broken out of the trees from the ice and winds of the winter.  They have GOT TO get picked up before I can start driving the lawn mower around the 3 acres of yard.

Not to mention the moles are back.  G'son and I will be cruising the front and setting the mole traps.  I hate to kill the little beggars, but they can do a lot of damage in a short time tunneling across the yard.

I went for my firs t(in a long while) little dog walk in the woods, after being taken out for breakfast, and stupidly managed to put foot in a pothole and twist ankle and fall over.
Now have a mildly but painful sprained ankle Duh!!!!!
