thought i'd jump in on this today  :)  I was up at 5 30am to get hubby's food and ice ready for the big D.  Took him in, put on my 'tech' cloths to watch him get cannulated, took my doggies to the dog park, went and bought groceries, came home and let out the chickens, feed the doggies and cats, did the morning dishes, rented out our trailer, went to pick up hubby, made lunch, got out the gardnening tools, hubby mowed lawns, i moved the chairs etc for him, i did the trimming around the parimiters, trimed the bushes, blew off all the shereddings, swept them up..........took a shower, and took a quick nap :-)  Thats just so far of course, it's only 4 30pm  ;)

I did an 8.5 hour shift today and finished the week with 39 hours straight time and 30 minutes of over time, with an overtime shift tomorrow. This will be the first week with over 40 hours since early 2007 (up until two weeks ago it would have been the first week with more than 30 hours; in the last three weeks I doubled my hours for the year).

If this keeps up (it will if I can) I should regain my union insurance early next year. Work + Insurance = Travel.

How do you get the energy to do all that?

Please give us an idea...

Thanks, Kristina.

I think Walter said it best:
Quote
I let my spirit tell my body what's going to happen what I'm going to do what I'm not going to do, because if I let the body tell me what I'm going to do I'm not going to do very much.

That seems about right to me. It's been 10 years since I worked day after after day away from a desk I was only offered this position last month), I didn't know if I'd be able to do it, but after 6 days (8.5 today, 48 hours for the week) I'm grinding it out.

My muscles are sore in a good way (my feet are sore, in a bad way) but I'm psyched to finish out this show (the first big show since I got back). I'll work tomorrow and at least into next week, then we'll taper off into the holidays.

But come the new year I'm ready to make the job a priority and I think it'll be good for me. When I started with the union in 1995, it's what turned things around for me in general. I'd say working turned a downward spiral (at the time I had been on dialysis 4 years) into an upward spiral - by the end of 1995 I felt like a new person. No one would go to the gym for 8 hours every day but that's what work felt and feels like. Physical work is just sustained exercise and it leads to eating better and sleeping better and being more organized. It's an upward spiral.

I remember the late 90s as a great time, mostly, a period of work and travel; I'm going to try to get back to that ... my body is just going to have accept that and make it happen.

Bill, what kind of work do you do (sorry if you've mentioned this already and I've just missed it).

I work for a company that sets up tradeshows. From 2000 to 2006 I used a computer to layout the shows, and when it got busy I would help to produce graphics. In 2007 I deemphasized work to volunteer more ... when I wanted to get back to work the economy had tanked and I had lost my place in the rotation so I wasn't getting many hours.

Last month I was offered the lead graphics production spot, I accepted but I still had volunteer commitments to unwind - I flew to Baltimore last week - this week is my first full week back on the clock for a long time and really the first full week on my feet for an even longer time.

I've been making hundreds of signs mostly on a big flatbed printer (hp45500) for a computer show that opens at the convention center on Monday.

It's a union job, this is my 16th year in the carpenters union as a tradeshow specialist. Back on the 90s I kicked out carpet and did everything else that needs to be done to set up a show. I like working in graphics not least because I can bring my dog. He's been going to work since he was 7 weeks old  - he'll have 11 years in January.

Nothing.

And I feel like I never do anything. I'm 25, I should be doing things that are fun, that I'll look back on fondly, that will mean something in 5-10 years. Not dragging myself to dialysis and back, cooking twice a week, and wasting all my time on the internet. Hell, I've hardly done anything worth noting in the last 4 years. Definitely nothing at all in the last year and a half.

Visited today (and yesterday) with my nephew (who stopped by Atlanta by en route to meetings in Charlotte, NC) and my niece and her husband (who drove up from Orlando area). It was a great visit; we haven't seen them in four years. I jammed with my nephew, who plays acoustic guitar very nicely (I play bass). We ate, we laughed, as talked and generally got re-acquanted with these fine young people (bot 20-somethings).

My mother does that all the time, nearly every day.  It's very sensitive.  It goes off if you try to brown your toast a bit, or if something was spilled on a burner.  Sometimes it goes off if you open the oven to take something out.

So, what did I accomplish today.. I successfully overcame the urge to hide under a table from 8 children who would plug their ears and scream at the top of their lungs if one of them them started singing Justin Beiber songs.

Yes, sort of.  I went to see the Allergist today and hopefully got some meds that will clear me up.  My voice is gone, gone, gone.  I've been coughing so violently that my little kidney and my bladder has just decide to empty with every cough, if you know what I mean.   :o

I sat at the computer for the morning. Costo run by 2p.m.   Then to the Goodwill Thrift Store, where I proceeded to buy science fiction like crazy!  For 54 dollars I brought home over 40 books.  Awesomeness!  Put groceries away, put books away. Trying to get IHD Holiday exchange gifts packaged by boxes are not working out. I may send them three flat rate boxes with gifts in them.  Drive them all crazy!

I didn't do anything today except stay warm under the blankies.  The power company decided that Mom was too far behind in payments to bother even letting us know they were gonna shut the power off, so we had no idea of their plans, until the bang on the side of the house (closing the meter) woke me.  That was at 10:30 this morning.  They turned it back on at 4:55pm.  So, I spent the whole day in a cold house, and chose not to take my walk, cuz it was cold and wet out, and there would be no way to warm myself up quickly when I got home.  Besides, it starts getting dark at 3pm these days

Holy crap Riki I can not believe that they just cut off the power like that!!!

In Canada it is illegal for any utility to be disconnected between the Oct 31st and April 1st. the companies will charge you up the hoop in fines but they still can not cut you off!!!

My father-in-law used to run the local city hydro company and he told us that there were lost of times that ppl would not be able to pay and there was nothing that could be done to them until after April 1st. That he actually told one family that were having money problem just to hang in there until Oct 31st then they could not worry about it for at least a few months....

That may have been the case at one time, but it is not anymore.  They can put load limiters on the meters now, so that it will run your heat and hot water, and keep your freezer from defrosting, but that's about it.  We did that for a few months through the spring and summer, just cuz things were tight and Mom couldn't afford to pay off the bill, and they wouldn't turn it back on till the bill was totally paid.  She paid on it until it was paid off, and then they took the load limiter off.

right now, we don't have a furnace.  It was on it's way out for a while, but finally gave up about a month ago.  We've been using electric heaters to keep ourselves warm, and the day that they shut us off, it was a cold and wet day, so there was nothing to keep me warm except blankets and a cat.

As for what I accomplished today, I posted 2 notes on the facebook page that I created for the PEI chapter of the Kidney Foundation.  It was a royal pain in the butt, but I go it to work, although, I think my cat may have learned some new swear words.

Hey RIKI did i see correctly that you are in PEI??  My dad was born there, in Murry Harbour. I have not been back since my grandfather passed away but my dad says that we still have family there somewhere.  My dad and his dad were not close and when my grandfather passed away that was the last time my dad ever went home, his mom had died when I was 5....sad as I always wanted to go back and see if I could track any extended family down.

I had not realized that the ban on turning off the power had gone by the wayside, not cool!!

What's past is prologue

« Reply #199 on: November 13, 2010, 10:22:03 AM »

Not yet today, but yesterday I did. We were up against some serious deadlines at work, and it was electrifying. My phone rang nonstop, but I got everything on my end finished up and got a bit of a jump on today. (I basically work when I can, and if it's a weekend, I'm happy to do it.)

The person I work with most closely wants to see me promoted to a job I do not want, so that's been awkward. I think she just calls it a promotion to make it sound like an honour, but what do I know? I think I will have to confide in the owner that I do not see myself being successful in this arena. It would have to come at a substantial pay rise, which I doubt is upon the cards right now.

I have many deadlines and I'm going on holiday soon, so back to work!
