I just spoke to Ktkatz and she's obviously not feeling well.  They have discovered that the source of the infection is MRSA in her graft, the same graft she's had for ten years and to which, in her words, she's "very attached".  They plan to pull the plug on that graft sometime this evening.  She doesn't know at this point what the next step will be in terms of her access and for now she just needs to get through the removal of the graft.  Very disheartening for her and all of our positive thoughts, prayers etc for her and her medical team are what we can do right now.

Oh gosh...that's frightening news.  MRSA in her graft?  Does she do D in clinic and perhaps picked it up there?  This is really very worrying.  Thank you for letting us know this latest update, Monrein.  Please keep us posted.  I had wanted to call her, but I don't really know her and didn't want to disturb her, so I'm glad that the more "senior" members have spoken to her.  Oh dear...this is not good.

I am so glad you had a chance to talk with her, Monrein.  I hate this has happened.  She is such a fighter and a wonderful role model to all of us.  10 years with this graft - I wish it had been 20.   Love you Kitkatz and keeping you in my thoughts and prayers.   :cuddle;

Just found out about this in another thread.
Sorry to hear about this kitkatz and hope they can get the MRSA under control fast. I hope you get to feeling better soon, but know this can take sometime. Sorry to hear that they also have to  do something with your fistula.

Get well soon.

Just got off the phone with KitKatz, about an hour I guess from Monreins call to her. Surgery is now scheduled for tomorrow at 9:30 A.M. In her own words, "they are going to rip my access out of my arm". Even as sick as she is, still cracking the jokes. They did not feed her all day today, until the Dr. came in and said the surgery will be tomorrow. She said to tell every one her spirits are up, and would love some calls, but not on Saturday as she is bound to be groggy most of the day.

I spoke to Kit briefly today. They did pull the graft and she says the pain is moderate but not as bad as expected. Other than that she is doing ok.

Here is an update from my dad about Kitkatz!

Katherine developed fever and a sore left arm, so last Tuesday night we went to Kaiser ER, 22 hours later after doing dialysis, they placed her at the Valley Annex. They determined she was infected by the super bug MRSA. Doctors decided to operate and remove the plastic tube in her arm which has been her dialysis access for the past 8 years.

So she was not allowed to eat Friday, did dialysis and in the evening went for surgery......... needless to say from 2130 to 0250 we waited while emergency cases bumped her off, so back she went to the Annex and me tried to get some sleep. They took her into surgery at 9am today, I got there at 10 and I just got home.

Needless to say she is sore, pissed, angry, and stressed out. Yet there is nothing we can do as it is out of our hands. She is resting, her good right arm has been bruised by a dozen needle tries to find elusive veins, has IV needles in both feet and until 2 today had a catherer in her right groin.

She is resting and is recovering from the surgery and sleeping :)! She says hello to everyone and thank you for keeping her in your thoughts and prayers!!!

Here is her new her room number is Two West # 2119 and the phone is 909 - 427 - 6319.

Have a great day and thank you for keeping my mom in your thoughts!!!

Thanks for letting us know. Please let her know we miss her and if she wanted time off, all she had to was tell us. Ha ha ha! Seriously though, I am thinking about her all the time and hope she shakes this bug and can get out of the hospital soon. Sending love to her and Victor too!
