Title: Can you guess what song these lyrics are from?
Post by: Sara on December 08, 2006, 11:20:23 PM
Just for fun.  ;)

And I shall hear, tho' soft you tread above me
And all my dreams will warm and sweeter be
If you'll not fail to tell me that you love me
I simply sleep in peace until you come to me.

Great song.  I only recently learned it.   :thumbup;

I like Diana Krall's version with the Chieftains.

One of my friends spent a semester in England, and toured quite a bit of Ireland while she was there.  She heard the song sung in its entirety, and says there are a number of verses that rarely get sung, that don't have such a sweet and lovely melancholy vibe!

When you get a haircut, be sure to go back home
When you get a haircut, get a barber you have known
Since you were a little bitty boy sittin' in a booster chair
Or you might look like Larry, Moe or Curly if a stranger cuts your hair.

Something in the way she moves, or looks my way, or calls my name
that seems to leave this troubled world behind.
And if I'm feeling down and blue or troubled by some foolish game,
she always seems to make me change my mind..

And I feel fine anytime she's around me now, she's around me now almost about all the time.
And if I'm well you can tell she's been with me now.
She's been with me now quite a long, long time and I feel fine.

Close but no cigar. The James Taylor is right. Anyone else want a shot at the name of the song? By the way I once had someone tell me that if God has a voice it sounds like James Taylor, and I like to agree with that !

I thought it was "Something in the way she moves"  - he wrote in 1965 for a girlfriend.

My turn!

I can't understand it.
Everything was going so well.
The fur on my cat was just starting to grow back.
I just got my new color membership card
Into the James Dean Get-It-Overnite Fan Club.
I couldn't believe it.
With personalized, autographed picture,
Faded blue jean jacket,
And the first in the series of strange,
But very cool,
Twisted Sister dance LP's.
Then I got this letter
From my dentist. . .

It says
Well Mr. Dean
You tried to run and hide
Said you'd be back in a few short months
How come you lied?
You've got to come down
Put those feet in your shoes
Got to come down
And start cryin' those DDS blues
Now I'm really bummed
I have to take the whole day off from my job
With the No Brag, Just That, Security Alarm Company
Where our motto is
"The only decision you'll have to make is
Who goes in after the snake in the morning?"

Apparently, no one but BT has any idea - it's DDS Blues by 2nu.

Here, BT - one more for ya. .

Yea, I can see it now

You know where the people play games with the night
God, it was too hot to sleep
I followed the sound of a jukebox coming from up the levee

Little Bunny Foo Foo

Little Bunny Foo Foo,
Hopping through the forest
Scooping up the field mice
And boppin' 'em on the head

Down came the good fairy and she said

"Little Bunny Foo Foo,
I don't want to see you
Scooping up the field mice
And boppin' 'em on the head.
I'll give you three chances,
And if you don't behave
I'll turn you into a goon!"

The next day:

Little Bunny Foo Foo,
Hopping through the forest
Scooping up the field mice
And boppin' 'em on the head

Down came the good fairy and she said

"Little Bunny Foo Foo,
I don't want to see you
Scooping up the field mice
And boppin' 'em on the head.
I'll give you two more chances,
And if you don't behave
I'll turn you into a goon!"

The next day:

Little Bunny Foo Foo,
Hopping through the forest
Scooping up the field mice
And boppin' 'em on the head

Down came the good fairy and she said

"Little Bunny Foo Foo,
I don't want to see you
Scooping up the field mice
And boppin' 'em on the head.
I'll give you one more chance,
And if you don't behave
I'll turn you into a goon!"

The next day:

Little Bunny Foo Foo,
Hopping through the forest
Scooping up the field mice
And boppin' 'em on the head

Down came the good fairy and she said

"Little Bunny Foo Foo,
I don't want to see you
Scooping up the field mice
And boppin' 'em on the head.
I gave you three chances
And you didn't behave
Now you're a goon! POOF!!"

The moral of the story is:
HARE TODAY, GOON TOMORROW

Yep, you got it!  How about

Little cabin in the woods
Little man by the window stood
Saw a rabibit hopping by
Knocking at his door.
"Help me help" he said.
"Before the hunters shoot me dead."
"Come little rabbit come with me.
Happy you will be."

Do I know the campfire songs or what??

Little Cabin in the Woods (yep, my kids learned it at camp too!)

How about:

Stay away from my window
Stay away from my back door too
Disconnect the telephone line
Relax baby and draw that blind

Kick off your shoes and sit right down
Loosen off that pretty french gown
Let me pour you a good long drink
Ooh baby don't you hesitate cause...

Tonights the Night, Rod Stewart

Windows were broken by your dear one's hands,
Gates left swinging by your dear one's hands,
An old book salesman asked if he could step in.
The sidewalks you slept on held no rest.
Gave away the money you saved
In your trust, you're sorry now.
Light hits you funny at the time.

On a cold winter's night, with the storm at it's height, the lifeboat answered the call,
They pitched and they tossed, till we thought they were lost, as we watched from the harbour wall,

That was  'The Henty Song'. It was composed by a carpenter called Charles Gee on board the Caroline during its voyage from England to Western Australia in 1829. I am surprised it's not in your repertoire.

Here's an easier one:  I was thinking of Old Ireland, and Killarney's Lakes and Fells,
I was dreaming of the Shannon and the dear old Shannon Bells,
When my fancies they suggested, in a vission sweet and clear,
Of the strange things that might happen, if we had Old Ireland here.

Darth, actually "Where the Parramatta River Flows", an old wobblies song from the early 1900s. It may sound familiar to you as it was based on the tune "Where the Shannon River Flows". It's a very warm arvo here, 36 degrees, and her Ladyship is snoozing. If I can figure out how, I shall post a few pics of her and the boys on the animals thread.

Mizar, I'll have to give it to you. I think "The Fraser River Flows" may have been the original adaptation by the US wobblies, before we Aussies did ours. With that sort of eseoteric knowledge, how about having a go with some rare lyrics.

Put your thinking caps on: So come all you screw warders and jailers
                                      Remember Perth regatta day;
Take care of the rest of your Fenians

One morning when the office had opened

I'm watching for my boy, Sir,
He's coming home to-day.

Angel From Montgomrey. John Prine song with great remakes by Bonnie Raitt and one by Susan Tedeschi. Use to play, and sing that song in my old blues band. Hhmmm Galvo, my mind's in overdrive. Another one to add to the bunch (easy one) "Felt like letting my freak flag fly".

Texasstyle, the freak flag's from "Almost Cut My Hair' - Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young.

Darth, your's is from Chris De burgh "Patricia The Stripper".

Have a go at:-

There's a hotel in the city,
As we climb the golden stairs,
And they serve the hash upon the second floor.

Doctor's office in the parlour,
And the undertaker keeps his shop next door.

There's an elderly gentleman in a nursing home that I visit every Sunday, and he sings this to me everytime he sees me.... It's..

'A White Sports Coat, and a Pink Carnation'.....

Try this...

A little maiden climbed an old man’s knees—

Begged for a story: "Do uncle, please!

Why are you single, why live alone?

Have you no babies, have you no home?"

"I had a sweetheart, years, years ago,

Where she is now, pet, you will soon know;

"After The Ball Is Over'. I love it and sing it when I'm wallowing in maudlin sentimentality!

This one also brings tears to my eyes:

"The years creep slowly by, ......
The snow is on the grass again
The sun's low down the sky, ......
The frost gleams where the flowers have been
But the heart throbs on as warmly now
As when the summer days were nigh
Oh, the sun can never dip so low
A-down affection's cloudless sky."

Lorena???...

Another one that Jimmy sings to me'.....

A lady doesn't leave her escort
It isn't fair, it isn't nice
A lady doesn't wander all over the room
And blow on some other guy's dice.
So let's keep the party polite
Never get out of my sight
Stick with me baby, I'm the fellow you came in with

You're good Darth. "Luck Be a Lady" sung by ole blue eyes.

This should  get you thinking:

" It's the one red rose a soldier knows,
It's the work of the Master's hand,
  "Midst the War's great curse
  Stands the Red Cross Nurse,
  She's ... .... .. .. .... .... ".

The Rose of No-Man's Land... Gawd, it's years since I've heard that one...

Try this...

Then the busy years went rushing by us
We lost our starry notions on the way
If by chance I'd see you in the tavern
We'd smile at one another and we'd say

Nursey, That's the lovely Emmylou Harris "If I Needed You" and, Darth,
"Those Were The Days My Friend'. Weren't they ever! And we did think they'd never end. My dear old dad used to sing "The Rose of NML" when he'd had a few.

Nursey' I reckon this will slow Datrh down:

"One day I watched a flock of whippoor wills,
 as they flew to their homes across the hills;
they were merrily flying, to the south I knew
and I couldn't help crying; "Take me there with you!"

Better luck next time, Galvo...

'Pick me up and lay me down in dear old Dixieland'... My strange music loving friend told me that one!....

Try....

Hear me now
Oh thou bleak and unbearable world,
Thou art base and debauched as can be;
And a knight with his banners all bravely unfurled
Now hurls down his gauntlet to thee!

P.S... Sorry Nursie!.....

Man of La Mancha (I Don Quixote)

"Johnnie, get your gun,
Get your gun, get your gun,
Take it on the run,
On the run, on the run.
Hear them calling, you and me,
Every son of liberty.
Hurry right away,
No delay, go today,
Make your daddy glad
To have had such a lad.
Tell your sweetheart not to pine,
To be proud her boy's in line."

Donovan's "Gold Watch Blues".

She is watching by the poplars
Colinette with the sea blue eyes
She is watching and longing and waiting
Where the long white roadway lies
And a song stirs in the silence
As the wind in the boughs above
She listens and starts and trembles
'Tis the first little song of love

I know it - "Pearls A Singer"!!

Try:

"You have loved lots of girls in the sweet long ago,
And each one has meant Heaven to you.
You have vowed your affection to each one in turn,
And have sworn to them all you'd be true.
You have kissed 'neath the moon while the world seemed in tune
Then you've left her to hunt a new game,
Does it ever occur to you later, my boy,
That she's probably doing the same."

This one is very different:
The composer, after successfully recovering from a massive stroke
was very grateful to be alive and dedicated this composition to charity.
At the first performance in Dublin the ladies were requested
to wear no “hoops” in their crinolines and the gentleman were asked
to attend without their swords, because there was not enough room
for every person who wished to attend.
Here it goes:

"Gather up the pots and the old tin cans
The mash, the corn, the barley and the bran.
Run like the devil from the excise man
Keep the smoke from rising, Barney.
Keep your eyes well peeled today
The excise men are on their way
Searching for the mountain tay"

Londonderry Air aka Danny Boy. Reduces me to tear every time!

"I cursed them to hell as our bow fought the swell.
Our ship danced like a moth in the firelights.
White horses rode high as the devil passed by
Taking souls to Hades by twilight.

Five weeks out to sea we were now forty-three
Our comrades we buried each morning.
In our own slime we were lost in a time.
Endless night without dawning"

Miss Camilla is in disgrace and is sulking in her tunnel. She started a barney with one of the old boys this morning.

Back Home in Derry (A lovely song!)....

I remember the day that the Bear O'Shea
Fell into a concrete stairs
What Horseface said, when he saw him dead,
Well it wasn't what the rich call prayers

McAlpine's Fusiliers! I love the Dubliners version.

"Loud the winds howl, loud the waves roar,
Thunder clouds rend the air;
Baffled our foe's stand on the shore
Follow they will not dare

Though the waves leap, soft shall ye sleep
Ocean's a royal bed
Rocked in the deep, Flora will keep
Watch by your weary head

Many's the lad fought on that day
Well the claymore could wield
When the night came, silently lay
Dead on Culloden's field

Burned are our homes, exile and death
Scatter the loyal men
Yet, e'er the sword cool in the sheath,
Charlie will come again."

'Goldfinger' - Shirley Bassey.

"He rides a feed lot and clerks in a market on weekends selling tobacco and beer
His dreams of tomorrow surrounded by fences
But he'll dream tonight of when fences weren't here
He blazed the trail with Lewis and Clark
And eyeball to eyeball Ol' Wyatt backed down
He stood shoulder to shoulder with Travis in Texas
And rode with the Seventh when Custer went down"

Close, and because I'm such a good bloke, I'll give it to you. It's actually "Advance Australia Fair" and it is indeed our national anthem.

Try:

Keep you under glass
Now I understand to hold you
I must open up my hands
And watch you rise"

Here's an easy one for New Year:

Off went the van with the home packed in it,
I walked behind with me old cock linnet.
But I dillied and dallied, dallied and dillied,

That's right Darth!!  Now do you know this good old irish song ( irish music is popular in Newfoundland!!)

Her eyes they shone like the diamonds
You'd think she was queen of the land
And her hair hung over her shoulder
Tied up with a black velvet band.
In a neat little town they call Belfast
Apprenticed to trade I was bound
And many an hour's sweet happiness
I spent in that neat little town.
Till bad misfortune came o'er me
That caused me to stray from the land
Far away from my friends and relations
To follow the black velvet band.

I wasn't there that morning
When my Father passed away
I didn't get to tell him
All the things I had to say

But I think I caught his spirit
Later that same year
I'm sure I heard his echo
In my baby's new born tears
I just wish I could have told him, in....................

Sorry this is a bit late Galvo the answer is it's a verse from the song 'The Living Years" by Mike and the Mechanics. An offshoot band lead by Mike Rutherford from Genesis.

Ohoi Galvo don't you go dissin' our beer. It should be served slightly below room temperature but not fridge temperature because its only then that you get the real rich taste of a live beer.  Unlike budweiser and fosters type beers which taste awful if they are not chilled and are so gassy they just make you burp and fart all day.  :boxing;

Darth, "Scratch Scratch" an oldie from Harry Belafonte.

Ken, I fail to see any problem in burping and farting all day. Some of my best friends etc. etc.

Now, on topic:

"DOUGH... the stuff... that buys me beer...
RAY..... the guy that sells me beer...
ME...... the guy... who drinks the beer,
FAR..... the distance to my beer
SO...... I think I'll have a beer...
LA...... La la la la la la beer
TEA..... no thanks, I'm drinking beer...
That will bring us back to...
[Notices can is empty]...D'OH! "

Back in the days when I was a teenager
Before I had status and before I had a pager
You could find the Abstract listening to hip hop
My pops used to say, it reminded him of be-bop
I said, well daddy don't you know that things go in cycles
The way that Bobby Brown is just ampin like Michael
Its all expected, things are for the lookin
If you got the money, Quest is for the bookin

They come again in the morn"

I've just been listening to Lee Morse singing this. What a glorious voice she had.

"Sittin' in the bayou country,
just me and my fishin' line
I raised a lot of hell and I hollered,
sippin' on that Georgia moonshine
Well, I know how to have a damn good time

and I like to get pure drunk

and they have a leader to the fold,

it was in the month of april,

By the time most folk are up and gone
You’ll be starting on one hundred and one

There’s not enough hours in a day
To do all the things she’s just got to do
When the daylight fades and the night invades
She’s only just begun

(It's Australia Day, after all)

"Angels" Robbie Williams.

"There is a minstrel, there you see,
And he stoppeth one in three
He whispers in this one's ear
"Will you kindly kill that doll for me"

All the town has watched this crazy gringo
As he pulls off the dolls head laughing
And miraldo! throws its body in the sea"

Fiesta The_Pogues

When I'm alone I dream of the horizon and words fail me.
There is no light in a room where there is no sun
and there is no sun if you're not here with me, with me.
From every window unfurls my heart the heart that you have won.
Into me you've poured the light,
the light that you found by the side of the road.

Time To Say Goodbye (Con Te Partirò)

Sometimes, I feel the fear of uncertainty stinging clear
And I can't help but ask myself how much I let the fear
Take the wheel and steer
It's driven me before
And it seems to have a vague, haunting mass appeal
But lately I'm beginning to find that I
Should be the one behind the wheel

"The Journey of the Angels" - Enya

Two weeks ago today,
My daddy went away,
And promised me to write every night.
Now you know how they are,
When they get away so far,
They just can’t treat a gal right,
Now all I do is sit and wait,
Thinkin' his love has turned to hate.

Title: Re: Can you guess what song these lyrics are from?
Post by: galvo on February 28, 2010, 03:36:40 PM
Correct, kristina. Another Lee Morse great.

hotnspicyazgirl, the general idea is that you identify the song posted, wait for confirmation from the original poster, and then take your turn. No dramas, but it seems to work well that way. So, as kristina has answered with 'you don't know me.', it's now up to you to yea or nay her; then she has a turn if she was correct.

Not criticising, just explaining. I's a fun thread, this one, and it's good to see you joining in.

Well you know those times
When you feel like there's a sign there on your back
Says I don't mind if ya kick me
Seems like everybody has
Things go from bad to worse
You'd think they can't get worse than that
And then they do

You step off the straight and narrow
And you don't know where you are
Use the needle of your compass
To sew up your broken heart
Ask directions from a genie
In a bottle of Jim Beam
And she lies to you
That's when you learn the truth

So try
"Oh, slow up, dogies, quit your roving round,
You have wandered and tramped all over the ground;
Oh, graze along, dogies, and feed kinda slow,
And don't forever be on the go,
— Oh, move slow, dogies, move slow.

I am so disappointed in all of you!

The song was the " Night Herdin' Song" written in 1898 by Captain Roberts of the Texas Rangers.

Try something easier:

'Daddy don't drive in that Eldorado
No more
He don't travel on down to the neighborhood
Liquor store
Lucy still loves her coke and rum
But she sits alone
'Cause her daddy can't come
Daddy don't drive in that Eldorado
No more'

Pokarekare Ana, it used to be on a few ads on TV.. haa, otherwise i would have had to look that up. Embarrasingly so, being a kiwi & not knowing Maori.. usually the way over here though  :rofl;

Kaay, how about this doozy

Gimme a country
Where I can be free
Don't need the unions
Strangling me
Keep me in exile the rest of my days
Burn me in hell but as long as it pays

'Arts For Arts Sake' 10cc.

Another easy one for you, Lady. Of course, the rest of you can have a lash!

"Mauria te hōnore o te iwi.
Ka hīkoi mātou ki te hoariri
Whawhaitia tae noa ki te mutunga
Mō te Atua! Mo te kingi! Me te whenua!
AU-E!, ake ake kia kaha e!"

Or as a pakeha would sing:

"Be the living expression of the people's honour.
We will march to the enemy
Put them to flight at the end.
For God! For King! And for country!
AU - E! Forever and ever be strong! "

Googling ain't cheating.

A marching song of the 28th Maori Battalion, whose 3500 members went on to win fame in World War Two as shock troops in Greece, Crete, North Africa and Italy. This marching song was written in 1939 by Corporal Anania Amohau of the Te Arawa, and it was later put to music by the bandmaster of Trentham Camp.  It was one of the most popular songs of the New Zealand Division during the Second World War.

Chorus:
 "Maori Battalion march to victory
  Maori Battalion staunch and true
  Maori Battalion march to glory
Take the honour of the people with you
We will march, march, march to the enemy
And we'll fight right to the end.
For God! For King! And for Country!
AU - E! Ake, ake, kia kaha e!"

Have a squiz at it on YouTube.             '

Your turn, Lady.

"Love, I don't like to see so much pain
So much wasted and this moment keeps slipping away
I get so tired of working so hard for our survival
I look to the time with you to keep me awake and alive

And all my instincts, they return
And the grand facade, so soon will burn
Without a noise, without my pride
I reach out from the inside"

Yeah thats Faith no more, everythings ruined. Galvo's song was hard and there is a significant generation gap between the song and myself...I am only guessing because I did listen to it I am not sure if it was the original or a remake but the time period is obvious.

Well done NatnGreg. It was Lilly Marlene and the most famous English language version was that by Marlene Deitrich.

It was originally the song of the German Afrika Korps in World War 2.

Gregory says he's gonna look that up, because when Bob Rogers used to play it, it was a bloke singing it.  (Its a show on the radio, Bob Rogers, the music you grew up with on 2CH)... he wants to know who that bloke was now...  anyway, the new lyrics from NatnGreg (actually just from Greg) are:

I thought of this one and actually given we are at 5 years, its probably appropriate.  The supplementary question for five extra points is, who had this as their quote on their profile?

The colours of the rainbow so pretty in the sky
are also on the faces of people passing by
I see friends shaking hands, saying "how do you do?"
they're really saying "I love you"...

Title: Re: Can you guess what song these lyrics are from?
Post by: galvo on September 13, 2010, 12:49:11 AM
I'll put you out of your misery,Riki. It's "What I'm Looking 4. (No Mountain High Enough)."

BUT Have a look at the lyrics of the 'Men At Work' song I mentioned earlier. Some of the lines are clearly stolen from it.

Last night I had the strangest dream,
I sailed away to China in a little rowboat to find you
And you said you had to get your laundry cleaned
Didn't want no one to hold you, what does that mean?

And you said
Ain't nothing gonna break my stride
Nobody's gonna slow me down
Oh no, I've got to keep on moving
Ain't nothing gonna break my stride
I'm running and I won't touch ground
Oh no, I've got to keep on moving

You're on the road and now you pray you'll last
The road behind you was rocky
But now you're feeling cocky
You look at me and you'll see your past
Is that the reason you're running so fast?

And she said
Ain't nothing gonna break my stride
Nobody's gonna slow me down
Oh no, I've got to keep on moving
Ain't nothing gonna break my stride
I'm running and I won't touch ground
Oh no, I've got to keep on moving

Never let another girl like you, whip me over
Never let another girl like you, drag me under
If I meet another girl like you, I will tell her
Never want another girl like you, have to say

Ain't nothing gonna break my stride
Nobody's gonna slow me down
Oh no, I've got to keep on moving
Ain't nothing gonna break my stride
I'm running and I won't touch ground
Oh no, I've got to keep on moving

Ain't nothing gonna break my stride
Nobody's gonna slow me down
Oh no, I've got to keep on moving
Ain't nothing gonna break my stride
I'm running and I won't touch ground
Oh no, I've got to keep on moving

Ain't nothing gonna break my stride
Nobody's gonna slow me down
Oh no, I've got to keep on moving

OK. Now an easy one:

"The canals and the bridges, the embankments and cuts,
They blasted and dug with their sweat and their guts
They never drank water but whiskey by pints
And the shanty towns rang with their songs and their fights."

Google says "navigator" by the Pogues.
Two hits call it "navigator" and some others call it
"The canals and the bridges, the embankments and cuts"

There's no pride in a google-answer though is there?

Using Dr Google is fine, Nat. And, yes, it is 'Navigator' by The Pogues. It's from their wonderful 'Rum, Sodomy, and the Lash' album.

Over to you, Nat.

Bloody hell! Here I am, holding things up again. Here's a Stoday special -

"Keep smiling through, just like you always do
Till the blue skies chase the dark clouds far away
Now, won't you please say "Hello" to the folks that I know
Tell them it won't be long
'cause they'd be happy to know that when you saw me go
I was singing this song"

aith of the Heart Lyrics
Artist(Band):Rod Stewart
Review The Song (18)   Print the Lyrics

Send "Faith of the Heart" Ringtones to Cell

It's been a long road
Getting from there to here
It's been a long time
But my time is finally near

And I can feel the change in the winds right now
Nothing's in my way
And they're not gonna hold me down no more
No there not gonna hold me back

Cause I've got faith of the heart
I'm going where my heart will take me
I've got faith to believe
I can do anything
I've got strength of the soul
And no one's gonna bend or break me
I can reach any star
I've got faith
I've got faith
Faith of the heart

It's been a long night
Trying to find my way
Been through the darkness
Now I finally have my day
And I will see my dreams come alive at last
I will touch the sky
And they're not gonna hold me down no more
No there not gonna change my mind

Cause I've got faith of the heart
I'm going where my heart will take me
I've got faith to believe
I can do anything
I've got strength of the soul
And no one's gonna bend or break me
I can reach any star
I've got faith
Faith of the heart

I've known a wind so cold and seen the darkest days
But now the winds I feel, are only winds of change
I've been through the fire and I've been through the rain
But I'll be fine

Cause I've got faith of the heart
I'm going where my heart will take me
I've got faith to believe
I can do anything
I've got strength of the soul
And no one's gonna bend or break me
I can reach any star
I've got faith

I've got faith of the heart
I'm going where my heart will take me
I've got strength of the soul
And no one's gonna bend or break me
I can reach any star
I've got faith
I've got faith
Faith of the heart

It's been a long road

Oh, it's been long road

My turn?  Oh drat! Now I have to think of something!

My mother - in - law, she is dead,
Hum - de - de - de - de - de.
She got caught in a folding bed,
Hum - de - de - de - de - de.
Ever since my mother - in - law’s been dead,
People have come to me,
Wanting to buy that bed.
For they all have mother - in laws you see,
Oh, Hum - de - de - de - de - de.
Hum - de - de - de - de.
Hum - de - de - de - de - de.

My grandfather used the sing this song.

Ooops! Yes, Kit, you were right on!

Here they are performing it live at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff New Years in 1999:

We are out there somewhere and Gwyn would propose to me a few minutes after they sang this song.

I love their Valley Boy accents. So adorable! Gwyn used to talk that! Sort of.... he's got a Northern, but I don't hear it anymore, except when he says the odd word, or when someone tells me 'your husband's accent is beautiful!'

"It matters little now, xxxxxx
The past is in the eternal past
Our hearts will soon lie low, xxxxxx

'Tis dust to dust beneath the sod
But there, up there, 'tis heart to heart."

My son likes some pretty obscure rap groups.  As a matter of fact he is at a show in Pomona tonight.  I asked him for lyrics that would stump you and yet you came up with the answer.  I really don't picture you much of a Tribe Called Quest fan.  I do not think I made such a huge leap when I posted that. lol

Yes there is. I should not have answered if I can't keep up with the replies.  Also, I should have lyrics ready if I'm going to answer, not just the first ones that pop into my head.  Thanks for saying that though, been feeling bad about the whole thing.

HINT ABOUT MY LYRICS It is a song that was first aired on a cartoon show in the 1990's. It is my understanding this TV programwas popular not only in the US but Canada, Australia, France, and several Spanish language countries. I hope this helps, it is a tad obscure.

Yes it is. I posted it just before going to an INXS concert in July.  The song was written by JD Fortune, who was with them when I saw them, and is from Saltsprings, Nova Scotia, which is close to where most of my family is from

Thank you, Riki, I was quite intrigued by the text...

This is my question: usually they sing this song in the French language,
but the translation is very well known:

“Mr. President,
I am writing you a letter,
that perhaps you will read
if you have the time.
I’ve just received my call-up papers
to leave for the front
before Wednesday night.
Mr. President,
I do not want to go,
I am not on this earth
to kill wretched people...”

The Deserter by Boris Vian and Harold Berg

I actually found the French text of the lyrics and I like it better than the English translation. *G*  No, I don't speak French, but I can read it, and I know enough that I can get by if I had to.

O. K. One from an earlier era:

"Johnnie get your gun, get your gun, get your gun,
Take it on the run, on the run, on the run,
Hear them calling you and me; Every son of Liberty
Hurry right away, no delay, go today,
Make your daddy glad to have had such a lad
Tell your sweetheart not to pine,
To be proud her boy's in line."

Where have all the young men gone?

Where have all the young men gone?
Gone for soldiers everyone
When will they ever learn?
When will they ever learn?

Where have all the soldiers gone?
Long time passing
Where have all the soldiers gone?
Long time ago
Where have all the soldiers gone?
Gone to graveyards every one
When will they ever learn?
When will they ever learn? "...

O come, Thou Rod of Jesse, free

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.

This is "O come, O come Emmanuel".  It was the carol we always sang at the beginning of the candlelight Christmas Eve service at the Lutheran church where I grew up.  This is like the third verse, which we rarely sang.  Had to get more carols in!

 :shy;

A previously unreleased track by 1960s icons the Doors has found its way onto the belated 40th anniversary release of the band's landmark album "L.A. Woman" and will be released Jan. 24 on Rhino Records. The abrasively bluesy jam "She Smells So Nice," is the first "new" Doors song to be released in almost  four decades. Featuring vocals by the late Jim Morrison, the song was rediscovered by "L.A. Woman" co-producer Bruce Botnick, who stumbled on it while reviving the original session tapes during a remastering project.

The song's built on chugging blues chords, and Morrison's vocals are as wild as ever, though his shouts and yelps are a bit muffled. Though the quality of the recording is a bit rough, the band's energy still comes through. The song is posted below and also appears on the band's Facebook page.

Aside from the newly excavated track, the remastered two-disc version of the 1971 album comes with alternate takes of classic staples such as "Love Her Madly," "Riders on the Storm" and the title track. Doors fans can also look out for the Jan. 24 DVD release of "Mr. Mojo Risin': The Making of L.A. Woman."

You need a guy that is simply shining
A guy like I, a G Like Me
Not a cat like that, he's simple minded
How is he gonna hit that spot, when he don't even know begin how to find it.
Me? I simply find it
Tick-tock like a clock, I continue to wind it.

Chorus:
Just a simple man
Need a simple girl
I don't need no confusion in my world
Just a simple man
Need a simple Girl
I don't need no confusion in my world

Oh, im a simple girl
I need a simple man

I'm on that simple plan

Just a simple girl

Okey dokey!

I await a rush of answers to:

'Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved home and the war's desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the heav'n rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation'

Splish Splash,
I was taking a bath
With a big butt girl of mine.
Rubba bubba dub
I was making suds
And havin’ a mighty fine time
Etc.

Never mine!

Anybody home?

The lyrics are:

'Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved home and the war's desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the heav'n rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation'

Are there any patriotic Americans in the house?

We had a dream we'd go travelin' together
And spread a little lovin', then we keep moving on
Something always happens whenever we're together
We get a happy feeling when we're singing a song

Splish Splash by Bobby Darin.  (Gerald's lyrics)
They used to play that a lot on AM radio in the 60's.

Some talk of Alexander, and some of Hercules,
Of Hector and Lysander, and some of Meltiades.
But of all the world's brave heros, there's none that can compare
With a tow row row row row
To ???????????????
