Yes, Zach, it is a great link, thanks.  That's where I looked up the Fresca, too bad I didn't look it up before I drank it instead of after.

And thanks, Sandman, now I'm drinking Sprite.  They said once I start dialysis I can have more potassium, so maybe then I can drink Fresca.

It's weird, the dietary restrictions don't bother me very much, but I care a lot more about what I drink than I realized!

Sprite and 7up are the only sodas I could drink and are actually not to bad either.  Gingerale is safe for me to but I just can't stand drinking it.  :P

How come Barq's rootbeer has Phosphate in Canada when it doesn't in the States? That is confusing :( I wonder if there is somewhere I can find one like this for Canadian pop :P

Keep in mind that pfd is only coca-cola products ;)

Here is some on Pepsi: http://www.calorie-count.com/calories/manufacturer/700.html

Barqs here has phosphorous in it.  I read the label.  It does not taste as good as A&W.

Problem is just because it lists a phosphate ingredient on the label does not mean it has enough in the product to register. Barq's in the US lists phosphate as an ingredient but evidently there is not enough in it to where it registers when measured.

Most sodas that do have phosphates in them have very little phosphates in them at all.  Problem with them however that little level is in a form that is easily absorbed by the body.

I do not advise the following at all as I am not a doctor.

However I know how I respond from trial and error and have been able to do this and still keep my levels low in the PO4 department.

Depending on how fast I drink the cola I will take part or all of a tums when drinking it.

Almost all my fluid comes from diet cherry vanilla coke or lemonade,.....well that and protein drinks. :)

I also do that Big.. I will take a Renegal while drinking my soda... or a tums whichever I am nearest too. I was drinking lots of Dr Pepper as thats my FAVVVVVV drink... but I realized I like other sodas that probably have less or no phos in them, so i switched (just recently as a week ago..) so hopefully this helps my numbers somewhat next month.  :thumbup; Great advice Big.

:bump;  Well.... NO EASTER EGGS for me    :'(

I have been to clinic today and my phosphate levels are up. I was more concerned about my potassium levels but they are great. Apparently that is common with PD patients, you loose potassium and protein.

I thought I was really good at throwing down those binders but obviously not enough  :P

What suggestions can anyone give me to get the level down. Do I just give in and take more binders (ahh :-X) or try to alter my diet again?

What kind of binders are you taking, and how many? You could always watch how much phos your intaking.... you could probably always cut down more.

Alter the diet again, and take more binders.  That phosphorous goes up and down. Try not to get real stressed over it. I think it can hear us.

Thanks Angela and Kit for the advise.

I am on Caltrate x7 per day. Generally 2,2 and 3. I think I need to pay more attention to when I am having a cup of tea (or Latte with the girls) and remember to take one then also. I get a little confused with what foods contain phoshate  :P .
I would really like to get the numbers down so more binders for me   ::) :P

This is a dumb question but what are binders and what is the purpose....my husband's doctor said his phosphates and phosphorous are fine but I still need to know all this.....

Also will taking amino acids delay the dialysis?

Binders, like PhosLo, Tums, Renegel, and so on... are taken when you eat, to BIND the phosphorus in your food so you don't get as much as if you hadn't taken  the binders... therefore, lowering your phosphorus in the long run.

Ok, they didn't give these to my husband and the nephrologist called last night and during the conversation, he said don't give him anything without consulting the doctors.......they gave us a copy of the labs he had done today but they didn't check his phosphorous......
