Does anyone drink or smoke at this stage in their life's?. Just curious because I was a drinker and smoker before ESRD. I also still drink every now and then and I smoke even more now that I am dealing with this.

My Nephrologist told me to quite smoking so I did. I have been a non-smoker now for 5 years since November of 2001. Since I had to quit smoking and this was BEFORE smoking was banned from bars in my city (ya you heard me right) I decided to stop drinking as well. I stopped going to bars because all the smoke was too tempting for me and my throat would get so dry from the smoke in the bars that I would want to drink more ...

I had my stint with smoking in my teen years but nothing long term.

I also had my stint with alcohol in my teen years ( no drinking age in Europe  >:D ) but got over that phase real quick.

The years before ESRD I was a moderate drinker on the weekends but rarely with excess at least compared to some of my friends who were drunk through their whole weekends  :-\

Since I have found out about my ESRD, I will have a drink every now and then maybe one two or three in the same night, but that's very rare every other month or so.

What really got to me with ESRD is I couldn't drink tea anymore. I could have a real small cup but if I had a large quantity it made me feel well ill  :-[

Really? I love tea but I am glad I am fine with it. I  just can't go overboard with the amount.

I will still have a glass of wine when I go out to dinner, but I love ice water and can't get enough of it, so I don't usually want to waste my allowable quantity on booze.  I have smoked in the past some, but not anymore.

Guilty as charged your honor.  If i know i am going to drink (mostly margaritas) then i watch my intake for that day and as for smoking, ugh, yes,  i do admit i have a smoke right before i hook up, sometimes, sometimes i just dont smoke, but if i feel i need to relax, then i fire it up,  i also do enjoy a shot of tequila now and then too.

I gave up the drinking, but smoke like a chimney. The smoking has to stop too, as it is one of the last steps for me to get on the transplant list. That will be a hurdle, been smoking since age 12, I'm now 45

I have never smoked (except for one 555 when I was 16), and hardly ever drink alcholic beverages, although I am not against them.  [Does the wine at the Lord's Supper count?]  Just wasn't my family's culture.  My dad would get gifts of bottles of liquor and they would stay in our cupboards.  He would use them as re-gifts to other people!
However, where smoking is concerned, I remember that this was one of the things that gave Jamie a definite problem.

"Does anyone drink or smoke at this stage in their life's?"

I've never been much of a drinker, except for Dr. Pepper, it smoking that has me hooked!  I have smoked since I was very young, 12/13 yrs. old.  I am constantly in the process of quiting smoking.  It's the hardest thing I've ever had to change.  I have just been given some other suggestions; read, set a date, don't buy cigs. when I am near my quit date, etc...  So I am going to try again, and try reading, playing video games, etc... to quit smoking.

Part of me wants to quit really bad and then the other part of me that does not want to quit.  I do want to be healthier, maybe give a transplant a try, live longer, not have breathing problems, etc...  God how I wish I'd never started smoking!

I have never smoked.  I can count the amount of drinks I have had on my fingers, maybe up to eight my entire life.  Raised in a strict household when growing up.  My Dad smoked like achimney around us all of the time and I could barely breathe when I was growing up. I hated the smoking.  He smoke pipes, cigars, cigarrettes up till the day he died of lung and pancreatic cancer.  It took him fast.  In the 60s less was known about 2nd hand smoke dangers, than now.  I have been very lucky.  Worst habit I have is food.

I smoked for many years and have been smoke free for nearly 13 years now.  Hardest thing I ever did!  My reason at the time was that I had to have a tooth pulled and did not want to experience a dry-socket again!  That was super painful, the packing, removal, repacking, it was just horrid.  Then I went one day, said 'why not 2?' and that is how I finally made it (plus the help of a great supporter and cheerleader!)  Haven't chanced putting another cig. to my lips to this day, don't even want to go there, too tough!  I do have a strong aversion to smoke now and it ruins my meal to be near smokers in restaurants, but that is a good thing!  My children's father, a heavy smoker, passed away 2 years ago from lung cancer that spread to his brain, etc.  what a horrible way to go!!!  I have given the book Quit Smoking the Easy Way  by Allen Carr to several people for Christmas, and it has worked for each and every one that read it- even years later, still not smoking!  I bought several copies on E-Bay at once.  I hope this helps those of you that want desperately to help yourselves and live longer and better for your loved ones!  Best of luck,  Anja

Naw ... that doesn't count. Wine at Holy Communion I have never counted towards me being any kind of drinker :P

I don't drink any alcoholic beverages except for that rare special occasion drink or maybe a sip of wine at diner.  I do smoke though.  Been meaning to quite but it's not as easy as it sounds.  Been smoking since I was 16 and I'm 38 now.  Thankfully, it's only about 1 pack a day.  I know some people who smoke 3 or more packs a day and it's crazy.

@ bajanne2000,  What is a 555?

There was a brand of cigarette called 555, back in the 60s.  Don't know if they still exist.  DuMaurier, I think they were.
