Phosphorus

When looking at food labels what are the key words to look for (other than the obvious "PHOSPHORUS") that tells you there is large amounts of phosphorus?  I haven't been placed on any food restrictions yet, but I want to start looking at the things I eat.  However, I can't tell!  I see in the ingredients "phosphate something or other", but how do I know how much?  What am I doing wrong?

Ingredients are listed in order of amount - the ingredient with the highest amount is listed first.  Phosphorous is used as a preservative in many processed foods.  So if anything with phophorus is listed in the middle of the ingredients - it's probably a no-no.  If it's at the very end, you need to limit amounts of the food.  If it's not listed at all - then it's probably safe in larger amounts.   Careful, though - not everything with phos lists it as an ingredient.  It occurs naturally in things like meat and dairy products, and it's not listed on those things at all.

another  to  look  for  is  sodium,usually  at  the  bottom  of  the  list,your only  supposed  to  have  1000mg  a  day. sodium  brings  on  thirst

Anything with whey, which is a milk protein, or any mention of milk. Also nuts and whole grains.

  She isn't on dialysis yet. Or any food restrictions as of yet, she's trying to start watching her intake some and learning how to buy and eat foods that she will eventually need to do on dialysis... if I understand what I read correctly.

THAT'S the answer I was looking for!   Thanks so much!  I just didn't know if there were multiple ways to say "phosphorus"!   

And, yes Angela, I'm not on any restrictions yet.  My neph has told me to reduce and try to stop carbonated drinks (I've reduced them significantly) and a while back he told me to take Tums with my meals.  However, not long ago he gave me another med that is a liquid that I mix in a drink and it says not to take any antacids while taking this, so I haven't been taking my Tums.  Truth be known, I haven't taken them in a long while, but my labs show my phosphorus is in the normal range, as well as my potassium!

 Yes, I've heard Sprite is ok, as well as A&W Rootbeer and Barge's Rootbear.    Right?

Barques Root Beer has phosphorous in it, I hear.

A&W is the best in town! MMMMMM!

I was told as long as the soda is clear and/or fruit flavored it's ok.

Barq's is the only rootbeer with caffeine that I'm aware of, and I've heard it also has some phosphorus...go with A&W or Mug.

Yes, Mug - sorry!  I usually just by A&W diet.  It's really good!

Also remember to stay away from Gatorade and Vault.  They have loads of potassium and phospherus.

I love that they have the small 8 oz cans of diet A&W, 7-up, diet gingerale, etc.  It helps with Rob's liquid restriction, plus he's a diabetic.

Barq's regular and diet does not have phosphorus.
