For the second time in a month I am going to have surgery.  This time it is outpatient and it is to correct a problem caused by the first hospitals  acute dialysis unit.  The vascular surgeon is going to have to cut an inch long place in my lower buttonhole and try to "piss off"  my fistula to find out why I am breaking out bleeding for no reason now.  If he finds the spot that is bleeding he will put a stitch in my fistula to keep the bleeding from happening again.  I am not happy about having to do this because it was senseless in the first place the reason of why it is occuring now.  The hospitals dialysis unit was adamant about not letting me stick myself in my buttonholes.  They claimed it was a liability issue for me to do so.   :banghead;  I don't know if they are ignorant of buttonholes or what but I figure that it is my arm and my life.  I am sorry to be on a rant about this but I think this surgery to correct my bleeding problem could have been avoided completely.  Also I am concerned about what could happen to my fistula putting it under the knife.  I thought I would post this and let everyone know what is going on.

I hope all goes well Earlinda. I had three surgeries on my fistula. The problem was not enough blood was going to my hand and was causing my first two fingers to turn blue and numb. The doctor and i were afraid to operate but on the third try he was able to fix the problem. Your ranting doesn't bother me at all. That is what i am here for my friend.

Thank you all so much for your encouragement and support!   You know I love you guys and you will be the first to know how everything went.  Of course I cannot sleep and have to drive from 2 a.m. till 6 am to get to the hospital.  I am going to try to catch an hour and a half of sleep though...I did have a nap this afternoon after dialysis.  You just do not know how much it means to me to have your love and support I feel much better now going into this.

Well the surgery went well although right before I left the morning of surgery I was brushing my teeth and broke out bleeding.  This was the worst bleed yet and I was a little worried that I wouldn't get it stopped.  Things like this shouldn't happen at 2 am.  But, I did and made it on time to St. Louis.  It is a 3 hour drive.  Let me tell ya 6 am is early in the morning.  The surgery was performed with medication to make me sleepy and a local.  I never did go to sleep and talked to them the whole time.  When the surgery was over the doctor handed me a cell phone to tell my mom that I was fine.  I really like my vascular surgeon.  I now have a 3 inch area with ugly stitches and hopefully it will be a nice smooth scar.  Guess the truth will come in 3 weeks when I go to have the stitches removed.  It really made me feel better to have all of you caring about me.  Makes the whole experience easier.   :grouphug;  Thank you for your love and friendship.

Oh geez, I am so sorry this happened to you!!  What dialysis patients go through due to the ignorance of the professionals who should know better is tragic and so unnecessary.  I'm glad the surgery went well and hope the problem's over.

Can you get the neph to write an order for you to use the buttonholes yourself?

Now heal up, keep it elevated and use ice and pain relievers as needed.
