How do you figure that??  I'm just asking, cuz I've found, at least in the US, that paying for dialysis as a visitor is so different from what medicare is charged.  In Philly last week, I paid US$330 per treatment.  Isn't medicare changed US$5000 per treatment?

That's all part of the medical billing game insurance companies play down here. You may be "charged" $5000, but Medicare "allows" only $200-ish, and that's what they pay. I guess that way they keep too many people from dialyzing outside of their normal centers.

As far as Americans going to tourist destinations, yeah, they're gonna soak you for as much money as they can. If it costs $1000/treatment on a cruise ship, they will be charging something similar. Your Canadian Provincial insurance might cover some of it, though.

So just to confirm the $1000 number is your guess?

I traveled a lot well on dialysis, but not to major tourist destinations like Aruba, but generally treatments were on the low end under $500, more likely closer to $250.  The most expensive was $750+ CAN in Montreal and 500 euro in Brussels.

This website that will not load says that in the Caribbean its in the $300-$400 range which sounds about right for me.

The cost per dialysis treatment in the Caribbean at land based clinics is between $300 and $400 US.
But as always the price is set by the treatment site and usually getting the treatment site is part of the hard part so I recommend reaching out to the center and they will provide the real information.

Costs I saw when on hemo:

$290ish - Medicare

$490ish - When on private insurance

$3000 and $5000 (no, not a typo) when on private insurance visiting an out of town clinic.  And yes, my insurance paid this asking price since they did not have a contract with those centers.  At that price, I should have received a happy ending.

If I am not mistaken Medicare pays about 370 per treatment next time I get a listing from Aetna I will check.

Aruba is a foreign country so Medicare will not pay for treatments. So don’t get confused.
