Oh, this post is giving me flashbacks!  I hope I never have to do the no food or water thing ever again.  It was starting to feel like some sort of kharmic punishment for all the cheating I ever did on the dialysis diet!

Right now, I just keep craving blueberries.  Strawberries, grapes, cherries - they all go squishy in my fridge, but I'm eating a minimum of 5 pints of blueberries a week.  Transplant meds do some weird things to your tastebuds!

Borracho beans
Pinto beans, bacon, jalapeņo peppers, cilantro, onions, garlic and other seasonings.

I frequently crave a peanut butter and banana sandwich on whole wheat bread, with a tall glass of cold chocolate milk.

I miss chugging ice water, sipping coffee all morning, drinking two cups of tea after every meal - heck, I miss eating more than one meal a day. I miss pizza, chili with beans, french fries without guilt (heh), pumpkin pie, orange juice, ice cold milk, ice cream, milkshakes.

I miss the energy to cook and clean afterward, living with people who leave the kitchen in a usable state, and the money to keep food that's good for me on hand.

On dialysis days I try to eat breakfast before dialysis, but nothing too substantial or my blood pressure drops. Sometimes I eat something that lasts me until lunch after dialysis, sometimes I only manage to have some cereal. After dialysis, I pick up lunch somewhere.

On non-dialysis days I tend to only have coffee in the morning, and I manage to cook something for lunch, or pick something up if I can't handle cooking.

Typically for dinner I don't have the energy or motivation to cook, so I end up with dumb snacks.

I often have the energy to cook. I don't have the energy to clean. And the way the kitchen is abused by my family, I'd have to clean before and after cooking.

I miss feeling full after eating a renal friendly meal. For example, someone just listed a meatball and red pepper
recipe. Sounded great until I got to the portion size - Two one inch meatballs !!!! You must be kidding - two one inch meatballs
doesn't even qualify as a snack. I'm always hungry and believe that if I stick to the portion size of these renal
friendly meals I will will die of starvation before my kidneys do me in. Help !!! I,m Hungry.

brmoore, I agree. It seems really hard to get enough calories without overdoing the potassium, phosphorus, sodium, or fluid.

Actually, that receipt was listed as part of several Superbowl snacks, not a complete meal.

If you wanted, you could eat three times more meatballs, with some pasta and a slice of italian bread.

Be Well

"Wabi-sabi nurtures the authentic by acknowledging three simple realities: nothing lasts, nothing is finished, and nothing is perfect."

Don't ever give up hope, expect a miracle, pray as if you were going to die the next moment in time, but live life as if you were going to live forever."

A wise man once said, "Yesterday's the past, tomorrow's the future, but today is a gift. That's why it's called the present."
