Okay so I have had to watch everything under the sun for 9 years. But my father is now having to watch it.  He thinks everything I make is bland.  He is used to eating all the bad stuff out there and not enough of the good.  He lives off of fatty red meat, pork, and patatos.  Now he had to watch all three. So please help with some ideas cause I am not getting anywhere with him.  I need some not so bland meals. Please help

I highly recommend Mrs. Dash. I have every variety. I use it liberally in my cooking to add some flavor and spice now that I use no salt.

I hope that helps.

Mrs. Dash is a goddess in my book.

Manda you and your father are on two different diets right now.  You are pre dialysis and he is "dialysis".  You are on low protein and his is high protein.  You should not be eathing the same things.  You BOTH are probably on a low sodium diet.  That is as Mikey said.... Mrs. Dash.  I use it on eggs and almost everything.

See I was told to stay away from a low protein diet. I used to be on a low protein diet, but my doctor told me they are finding that it isn't effecting the kidneys more.  But I am not on a high protein diet either.  And I agree we do have diffrent diets.  I also have other problems wrong with me.  So my diet is really jacked up.  I its so hard to explain my diet.  And I wasn't talking so much as to eating the same stuff, but as cooking the same way.  Like he used to fry a lot, and he needs to watch that a lot. And I do use a lot of Mrs. Dash, trying to get my dad to start.  But I do agree I am clueless to what kind of diet he should be on with daliysis.  Another thing though my dad is not eating at all.  I think some of it is he is scared, being on a diet has him all rattled. He dosn't want to eat the bad stuff. But he also is claming he just isn't hungry ever. Is that normal?

When you are just starting dialysis one symptom is "lack" of appetite.  It will get better for him.  He is safe eating chicken and rice... rice with chicken and chicken pieces with rice and a little rice with chicken.  (no salt of course)

I am certainly not super knowledgeable about this but will tell you about my Dad.

He has been on dx for 8 months now and his desire to eat, vomit, diahrroh(oh - can't spell that word so - shits) etc has fluctuated.
The first four months Dad hardly ate anything and I am sure it was to do with
- being scared of all the bloody food that he could and couldn't eat
- the shock of being on dialysis and how it changed his life
- loosing his appetite because of dx and his body had to get used to it
- being tired
- being depressed
- medication side effects

Anyway Dad and I spent quite a bit of time with the Renal Dietician and worked out a special diet that consisted of foods that he used to like eating and that "fit in" the renal diet.
We also got protein drinks prescribed too
He also keeps a log of what he eats - memory is a bit "how ya going" so then he can "see" just how much he eats rather than relying on his memory.  One day blends into the next.

In the past 2 months his appetite has improved.  He eats "normal" sized meals like the rest of the family but still tends to only eat small meals the day of dx.
Anyway that's my :twocents;

they have lots of recipes and some are good
some of them have photos and they really look like that when you cook them
I bought some low salt cookbooks but they were horrible

That is a good site, there is also a renal freindly "comfort food" cookbook put out by Genzyme, I believe.  (The Binder people).  Ask the dietician at the center, they could get a copy.  ITs GREAT.  I have used it, and I'm not on a renal diet of course, but it's good stuff.

I like Tabasco too but be careful of the quantities because it contains quite a lot of sodium.  I can't eat it the way I used to.  I've switched to a scotch bonnet (habanero) sauce because I find I can get more heat and flavour with less sodium overall.   The low salt has been difficult for me because it lends so much flavour to food in general but it's so very important that I treat it the same way I do phosphorus or potassium laden foods.  The renal diet is like hopping constantly from one tightrope to another to another to another.
