Your Thanksgiving Meal

We were at my Mom and Sister's house for the meal.

It was pretty traditional

Good moist turkey
Stuffing
salad
cranberry sauce out of a can
yams with marshmallows
rolls
apple,blueberry and lemon meringue pies


What was yours like?

We had the traditional turkey, dressing,giblet gravy along with yams with marshmellows on top,
asparagus and english pea casserole, whipped potatoes,and buttermilk salad.  For desert we had strawberry cake with cream cheese icing and pumpkin pie with cool whip.  We alll stuffed our
faces.

My Sister and I made a semi traditional meal also with a few exceptions. Keep in mind we had a vegetarian (my best friend) and a dialysis patient (my Dad) at our Thanksgiving.

Roasted garlic mash potatoes (I cut the potatoes into small cubes and soaked them for 24 hours)
Mashed sweat potatoes with toasted pecans ( I also soaked them in water) it didn't turn out well 
Turkey gravy
Mushroom gravy
Cornbread stuffing
Vegetarian stuffing
Asparagus
Corn
Cranberries
Strata (this was my best friend's substitute turkey)
Rolls
Pecan pie
Chocolate satin pie
Strawberry cheesecake

It was a long, exhausting but fun day and we still have leftovers!

i bought a 24lb turkey 2 weeks before thanksgiving (i like leftovers) it sat in the fridge for 8 days and at 6am thanksgiving morning was still frozen solid. at 6:30 i was at the store buying another turkey. we had, turkey, stuffing, applesauce 7up salad, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, corn, peas, cranberry stuff from the deli (yummy) and rolls. at midnight i took the first turkey out of the oven. lots and lots of leftovers. the leftovers from the first turkey went home with my daughter.

Thanksgiving was my first overnight since my transplant, and I got to help cook:

My friends are Jewish and keep Kosher, and their daughter is also lactose intolerant, so it was creative cooking for Thanksgiving (I did the tarts and souffle then helped with the prep on everything else):

Kosher/lactose free.  Which meant very creative in making the tarts and I was exhausted.  Surprisingly, it was  pretty good.  But my heart belongs to butter - I'll never be a kosher cook (no risk of conversion for this WASP)

Mashed potatoes (with NO BUTTER - Sacrilege)
Noodle Kugel
Stir fried Veggies (Brussels sprouts, peppers and onions)
Stuffed acorn squash
Cranberry pinenut stuffing

Pumpkin Souffle
Pumpkin tarts (have you ever had to make a pie crust without using butter??? I had to use crisco and a fake butter (pure earth) YIKES that is why I went with small tarts (easier to set the crust when it is small and with the left over filling, I made a Souffle)

First gathering, Thursday, 4 of us:

A pickle platter with small pickles, pepperoncinis, and four types of olives
Shrimp cocktail

14 lb. roast turkey
Stuffing/dressing (cooked outside the bird, but we still call it stuffing), made from scratch with cubed French bread, butter, celery, onion, sausage, mushrooms, sage, and homemade turkey stock.
Mashed potatoes with plenty of butter and cream, and some turkey stock for good measure.
Gravy made from the turkey drippings and stock
Candied yams (or, more accurately, glazed sweet potatoes) - boiled Garnet sweet potato quarters glazed in a butter-brown sugar syrup.
Uncooked cranberry relish, made with fresh cranberries and apples, put through a grinder, with sugar to taste.
Frozen biscuits

We had to abandon the greens: peas and carrots, and brussels sprouts, because we ran out of time and energy.

Dessert was pumpkin pie, storebought.

Second gathering, Saturday, 7 of us:

21 lb. roast turkey
Stuffing, from a box mix, cooked in the turkey
Mashed potatoes
Microwaved sweet potatoes
Turkey gravy
Simmered carrots
Cucumber salad, made with sliced cucumbers, vinegar, sugar, and spices.
Chunky canned cranberry sauce
Storebought rolls

Dessert:
Pumpkin pie (Sara Lee)
Pumpkin-apple butter pie (made by my sister)
Razzleberry pie (Marie Callender's)
Lemon Meringue pie (Marie Callender's)
A box of chocolate liquor bottles

By Sunday I was tired of turkey and Thanksgiving dishes.

I bought a 26.5 lb fresh turkey from a local Amish farmer and had 30 family members over!
We also had:

- fresh veggies

No one would take their leftovers - my son was in heaven when he packed his lunch for work!

I got the best deal around for a frozen turkey breast for my house.  It was marked wrong at only $.68 for an 9lb turkey breast!  My kind of deal!

Yes yams are sweet potatoes, but sweetened even more in a molasses glaze with marshmallows.  I personally do not like them.

Thanks for the clarification, but is this dish a dessert?  It sounds awfully sugary.

In Jamaica we had many different types of yams and we also have a sweet potato but it isn't orange, more yellowy and less sweet than the North American ones.  I like a touch of lemon juice on my sweet potatoes to cut the sugar.

monrein, we eat them as a potato, and yes they are exceptionally sweet. i make mine in the slow cooker, with butter, brown sugar and maple syrup. my parents often just bake them in the oven and eat them like a regular potato, but with butter and a bit of sugar.

Monrein -- just try it but you may not - while it is yummy -- I don't think it is renal friendly
 it is not a dessert
the melted marshmellows on it are good
I did not like it until a couple of years ago ---  very sweet

I don't like my veggies sweet.   I try to not eat too much sugar even though I like candy because I don't want to develop any more health problems.  Too much sugar for me means candida and the discomfort associated with it.

My house:
Kids brought...Smoked Turkey, Sweet Potatoes with Marshmallows melted on, Dressing, Pies.
I baked Ham, made Mashed Potatoes, gracy, green beans, cranberry sauce, black olives, and Glorified Rice which my son's request for every occasion..I learned this one from mom in ND.  I didn't feel good so ate about 3 bites (really) and went to dialysis below my dry weight, how funny or sad, depending on how you look at it.

True yams (tropical yams) are different from sweet potatoes, but one rarely finds those in the continental United States. What we typically call yams, including what traditionally goes on the Thanksgiving table, are orange-fleshed varieties of sweet potatoes, usually garnet or beauregard.
