We saw Jenna's nephrologist yesterday and he looked over her labs. He said that the fact that her kidney function has remained unchanged since January (creatinine now at 3.39) - that it's been steady since the treatment for rejection - and her other levels all look good - he surprised us by saying, "Barring an infection or dehydration, there's a good chance this kidney could possibly last 5 more years." OMG I couldn't believe it! Did he say YEARS?? He said, "So hold off getting the fistula surgery for now, let's see how the next few months go." Jenna and I got in the car and I said "Wow, isn't it great to get a good report card?" and she burst into tears. "Mom, this is why I haven't gotten a job or anything else, I thought it was over." We both had a good cry. This was the first really good news since her rejection episode. Of course, I know none of this is a guarantee, but the kidney Patrice gave her is one tough bean! The Brave Little Kidney!

Wonderful news! I know nothing is for sure, but it's always good to get good news and to have a positive outlook. Keep up posted!
-
Wow, I bet you were both jumping up and down, I know I would be, that is wonderful news Okarol
-
That's the absolute best news Karol...I am so thrilled to hear this. It is a brave little kidney indeed. Please hug Jenna for me. :cuddle; :cuddle; And that one's for you.
-
No news like good news.
And it sounds like it surprised you and Jenna greatly. May it go five years then many more after that. I am glad you got this news instaed of news youd rather not hear.
Prayers for Jenna and her kidney.
-
Okarol.. I had my first bout of rejection a year to the day after the transplant. That kidney went through 3 bouts all together, and lasted me 8 years. If it's caught early enough, rejection isn't the end either. Hopefully that is the only bout she has, and her kidney lasts her many, many more years than just 5.
-
So so happy for you both!!! :2thumbsup; :yahoo; This has made my night.... love to you x x
-
It sounds like the treatment worked wonders.
It is very possible her kidney could last for quite a while with appropriate care.
I hope Jenna can now feel like she is able to make some plans for her immediate future. All she can do is her best to try and prolong the life of her kidney.
-
Wonderful news! I'll bet you two did have a good cry! And who knows, it could be even longer than 5 years. No one knows for sure. I was diagnosed in 1993 or 1994 and I was told by my nephrologist that I would be on dialysis sooner than later. Well, my little native kidneys just kept on going and going and as you all know I didn't get my transplant until Nov 2008 and never did do dialysis. I was close though.
Here's to that awesome kidney/gift from Patrice! :beer1; May it live a long life so that Jenna can live a long life free of dialysis! :2thumbsup; Congratulations on the great news!
-
It is great to hear such wonderful news. I'm so happy for you both. I can't imagine how emotional it must have been for you and I'm glad that things are looking up for Jenna and her brave little kidney.

That is great news for Jenna. She was a lot more worried than she led on. Isn't it great to get some comfort news for a change. :2thumbsup;

yeah, I've got a tear or two here reading this. Absolutely nothing is guaranteed, but that the bean has gone SIX MONTHS staying pretty stable is a really good indication that all things being equal it could last a lot longer than you've both expected. About time you guys caught a break. This is great for Jenna and hope it gives her inspiration to take herself off hold and get on with things - because as we all know dialysis doesn't preclude having a job or a life etc.
Really good to read this news!!! :yahoo; :yahoo; :yahoo; :yahoo; :clap; :clap; :clap;
-
That is great news!
Won't her donor be glad to hear this!

That is great news indeed!!
I know I was feeling very tired at that creatinine level but it has to be better than dialysis. I pray that the brave little kidney continues to improve!!
-
Wonderful news!!! Poor kid, to be worrying so! Brave mom!! Now you two can get on with your lives, and LIVE!
-
Wonderful news! :2thumbsup;

Last Sunday Jenna and I attended the Renal Support Network's monthly support group meeting in Glendale. This time it was a picnic at the park - it was really fun - blazing hot temperatures but lots of shade and water balloons. Renal friendly food and and nice folks made it nice - Jenna actually spoke to another young woman close to her age who is on dialysis. :2thumbsup;
On Wed. we went down to La Jolla to see the transplant team for the every-other-month check up (since the rejection episode) which is different than the local nephrologist (also seeing him on alternating months.) We met with the transplant surgeon, which seemed confusing to him, he thought we would see their neph, but it actually turned out to be interesting. Doc looked over her labs - GFR at 18 and creatinine at 3.2 - and he said things were looking pretty good. I asked what he thought about staying at the same creatinine for 7 months and he said "It's puzzling." He could not explain it, but said to keep up what she's been doing. Finally got the immunos worked out, she's been up and down with the Prograf too low and Cellcept too high - the Cellcept tablets are 1000 mg and Jenna has to cut them in quarters to take a small enough dose.
This Brave Little Kidney is still running the marathon - no telling for how long, but for today things are very good!
:yahoo;

Excellent news Karol. Sending you and Jenna love and best wishes :cuddle;

What a trooper. I hope Jenna continues to do well. Good luck to all of you.
-
:thumbup; Jenna saw her nephrologist today and once again her lab numbers are steady! Her creatinine is at 3.21, slightly lower than last month. The Brave Little Kidney is hanging tough and still working like a champ! It's been 8 months since rejection knocked out some of it's function, but she's feeling great, her numbers are good and we are so very grateful! Also very thankful for her donor Patrice, who is a triathlete and marathon runner and there's no doubt in my mind that she gave Jenna one tough little bean! :bow;
-
I think I had a dream about Jenna last night because I woke up this morning wondering how she was doing, and voila! Here's an update on her brave little kidney. That' absolutely fabulous news; I am sure you all heaved a huge sigh of relief! How wonderful. Oh, I am so happy for you, Jenna and the whole family!
-
So glad the Dr visit went well. Did Jenna name her kidney?

No she never did.

I like "Brave Little Kidney".
-
The labs slip was faxed over today and it shows Jenna's creatinine is actually 3.15 - yeah, I know - not much difference statistically but that's the lowest it has been since she returned from Paris. Her GFR is 18, hemoglobin 11 and tacrolimus is good! :beer1;
-
More great news :2thumbsup; :2thumbsup; Continue to keep us posted. I love good news.
-
Karol and Jenna- This is such great news, I am so sorry I have not been around much lately but sometimes all the bad new takes toll and I have to take a break for awhile, this is such good news I had to join in and say how happy this makes me feel. So glad Jenna is doing better and getting good news, it will brighten her spirits and help her keep to the brighter side of things.... good luck and stay doing whatever it is that you do to make that magic continue to work. :yahoo; :grouphug;
-
It's funny but there's a nurse at my unit who calls me "Sir Richard the Brave" (no idea why) and whenever he says it I think about Jenna's Brave Little Kidney (hey any excuse to think about a beautiful young lady, right? >:D). I'm just so happy for her that it's struggling along keeping its head above water (that's a poor pun I know) and keeping her away from dialysis for now. I know it's not what any of you wanted, but it's much better than it could be, and hopefully keeping to the meds and everything being well it can stay stable for a long time!
:2thumbsup; :2thumbsup; :2thumbsup; :2thumbsup;

This is absolutely great! My caring thoughts continue to be with Jenna, and you Karol!

Jenna has had a blood pressure reading of around 140/100 for the last 2 weeks. Nephrologist is adding Amlodipine (Norvasc) to her pill regimen. She still feels good and her kidney is stable at GFR 18.
:pray;
-
Sending :pray; for the new pill to lower the bp
-
Go kidney, go! :cheer:
-
Hi Karol
About five years ago a friend of mine went through a rejection period with their transplant and they also had a problem with increased blood pressure 180/125 which they also corrected with medication. She still has the same kidney and has had no further problems with it. She went off all her blood pressure medications about two years ago. She is currently on safari in Africa and says she has never felt better in her life. She is in her early 30's so hopefully it will be the same outcome for Jenna.
-
Are you sure it's not a boy that's got her blood pumping that much harder?!?! >:D >:D >:D >:D >:D
-
Are you sure it's not a boy that's got her blood pumping that much harder?!?! >:D >:D >:D >:D >:D
I wish it was. Experiencing kidney disease during her teen years didn't help her social life, being pretty shy already, she tends to isolate. She says she doesn't mind being alone all the time, but I wish she'd meet someone.

I know I'm a bit old and all, but I know a pretty young lady when I see one... and I can relate to her kidney issues!!
Sorry Paris, AlohaBeth may have some competition for a long distance lover!! :rofl; :rofl; :rofl; :rofl; :rofl; :rofl;

Norvasc was one of my BP pills pre transplant and it worked very well for me. I hope it works for her.

They have me on amolodipine in conjunction with other BP meds but it works to keep mine in check. Hopefully it will do the job for that sweet girl of
mine yours. :-*

Today is Jenna's 25th birthday! :yahoo;
It's been 10 months since her rejection treatment. Her BP has dropped a little. She's been on Norvasc a couple of days so we'll see how it goes. Also getting labs again this week.
YLGuy, my hubby laughed at that video! :rofl;

Congratulations, Karol, on your daughter's birthday! And Jenna, :birthday;
(My sister married a man from Holland and it is a Dutch custom apparently to congratulate people if family members are having a birthday. I love it, as even if you can't be with that person on their birthday, if you see their Mum or Dad or whatever, you can still do birthday wishes :) )
