I work for the lovely Commonwealth. Since the new budget hasn't been signed, we don't get paid. We still must report to work. I am lucky we have 2 incomes. Money will be tight, but we can handle it. I feel sorry for others that only have 1 income. The prisioners still get paid. I guess it would be cruel in someone's mind not to pay them. Certain Agencies still get paid like Liquior Control and Lottery. I guess that too would be cruel not to pay those employees. Good heavens, we wouldn't want people not to serve the gambling or drinking public. The elected officials did meet briefly yesterday and didn't resolve anything. I am thankful to have a job, even if I don't get paid.

I thought there were two parts to any job agreement: 1. You show up to work and do your job competently. 2. They pay you. I think one of the two pieces of this agreement is missing. . . I am sorry you are in this situation and I hope matters are sorted very soon.

First let me say im glad that us Americans are not the only fools who coddle there prisoners.
Second this is so unacceptable. Please tell me once they settle (there mess) that you will get all back pay owed to you??
Here we have BIG UNIONS> The BIG UNIONS never want to concede when times get tough. They say we have contracts ect ect. They would rather a whole community or state like California or Michigan goes broke then to forgo there yearly raise. even when the majority of the BIG UNIONS little workers say lets give in. Better to have a job then to not have a job.
I am glad you have a second income. And i hope the commonwealth can get off there A**'* and do the right thing.

Our state is operating without a budget right now, so some of our state employees understand what you are dealing with. But, our the budget committee had a milk chugging contest today! Why aren't they working on the budget? I don't understand! I hope you get through this ok.

We had gave up cost living raise and had our pays froze for a year a few years back. We were encouraged to "do our part" when the state had ran into budget shortfalls. We had no choice in accepting it. But the legislature got a big raise. We did our part, why didn't they do theirs? They increased our contributions to our benefit fund. then borrowed it. When the fund became solvent, we were supposed to have less with held. That won't happen since they borrowed the money. If our benefit funds goes belly up, I guess we pay more.

Yeah, California has gone into the Hell in a handbasket budget mode and is taking it out on the education budget! Our kids are our national product, what are we going to tell them? Sorry, we spent all the money, now get to work and pull us out of this mess?

Here we have BIG UNIONS> The BIG UNIONS never want to concede when times get tough.
Its when you do concede that companies take further advantage. Romona and her colleagues agreed to a wage freeze several years ago and what good has it done her. Now she is working unpaid. These companies are so predictable when they call on you to make sacrifices with the promise of 'jam tomorrow' and tomorrow never comes. The only long term protection that employees have is in union solidarity.

New York had the same problem with the budget date slipping by. The governor of New York forced the legislators to meet until they had completed a budget and refused to pay their daily stipend for the extra days.

The sad thing is, I work for the government. I haven't heard a peep from our union. It would be nice to hear "That a girl! Hang in there while we work to pressure legislature." Now they are saying layoffs. Another thing they want to raise taxes. That 13 bucks Obama gave us, they want 5 of it.

Romona your union is only as strong as the resolve coming from the workplace. How many of your colleagues are in the union? If you all got together on this your union would have to listen and the stronger your collective resolve the more your union officials have got to listen and fight these issues for you. We are all in the union. We have no choice. If you are a full fledged member you pay more. If you don't want to be in you have to pay a "Fair Share". Automatically taken from your pay. Fair Share is slightly less.

We had rallies all over the state during our lunch breaks today. I was there for a short time. I called the governor's office and the legislature in my district. All we want is to be paid for hours worked. As of today we are 14 days into this mess. I have worked 10. The credit unions are offering no interest loans to those who qualify. I think it is insane that people need to borrow money because they aren't getting paid what is owed. I just can not see how the state can violate Federal Labor Laws. If it was a big business not paying there would be such a public out cry.

Just an update. Still no budget. I think the most frustrating thing about all of this is the off the wall comments the governor makes. He arranged for loans to be available to those who qualify through banks and credit unions. Big Deal. Just pay us. He advised the over 77,000 workers affected by this to apply for food stamps. I wouldn't want to apply. There are people that are disabled or unemployed that need it. Just pay us. He says unemployments benfits need extended. I agree, the ecomony stinks. Jobs are hard to find. I just want paid. Next week my pay will be a big fat zero. He is using us as pawns. They won't even meet again until Monday. We can't strike because we have no strike clauses.

Ken the unions here may be different then your unions. Unions FORCE companies that dont want to be unionized to unionize or get not tax breaks they make it hard to get loans for small companies ect. The BIG unions rule with an iron fist and dont truly care about the union members but more there union dues. heck they are after illegals not for better wages or a better work environment but to get there dues. Card check was killed thank god. Now we are fighting fast check which is a system Canada uses.
Im for the union worker not the union itself. In the day it was good to belong to a union. Now the unions run much of America. If your in a union and your not getting paid how is that a good thing. You can bet the union bosses are still being paid. Obama is in bed with the big unions just look how he gave unions the best deal in the car markets while letting the little person like you and I loose everything in the process.
Romona im sorry for you. You should be irate that Pelozi has put aside Millions of dollars to save a frog or rat whatever it is there saving. While real Americans are suffering. This is so ass backwards it makes people sick. California has such BIG problems when in reality they should have tons of money in surplus. Big government big payoffs. Corruption all around dems and repubs. And many states are starting to follow suit. These are scary times.
All of the people holding up your budget should be fired immediatly. They are only holding off cause this persons or that persons pet project isnt being considered. It isnt about the people but about the players. This is illegal i would think. Voting in one year make the right calls
These are strickly my views.

The main reason we can't strike is that we serve the public. The people that are affected are public servants. We are state police, welfare departments, departments of transportation, social services, Corrections ect, ......The state would be shut down if we didn't show up for work. The legislature has been sent home until commitees form. A co-worker spoke with his representive, they grew up together and live in the same town. He was told at the earliest another 10-14 days. That means we will go a month with out pay. So many people have to pay childcare and transportation costs. Do that with no check.

Are they going to pay you interest on the pay they withheld from you? They are keeping YOUR money, so they should be made to add interest when they finally get around to paying you. I can assure you, if it were the other way around and you didn't pay the IRS or some other government agency, there would be a huge penalty or interest charge added.
