What is there to do in San Antanio? Just wondering? :waving;
-
San Antonio sounds great!
There's the Alamo and the Riverwalk. And if the get together is planned around May 5th, I'm sure there would be festivals for Cinco de Mayo.
-
I'll let Kelly answer that, she wants us to come to Texas.
-
KellyT mentioned the River Walk, and said there are great restaurants there.
-
One thing I thought of is what about the people who live on the east coast. Both places are somewhat close together. However I think I will have enough money for Vegas by October.

Good point. Maybe do Vegas on alternating years. Or come a little farther to California and I will organize some fun here!

As long as I can make it to one of them.
-
We need one in the east or southeast.
-
I will try to make one and have never been to TX so that sounds fun too.

I live in San Antonio and I ask that very same question Rerun! :rofl; But that's just because I'm lazy!!!
There is the famous Riverwalk crammed with wonderful eateries, bars, dancing, singing, shows, etc. Also, there is Sea World and Six Flags Fiesta Texas. There are combination "weekend passes" for locations, so that would be tons of fun even if we don't ride any rides and just see shows or hang out in the fabulous water parks. We have some great shopping, as well. Oh, and don't forget about the Alamo and the Missions. Walking around downtown is lots of fun.
If you make the meeting in April there's Fiesta and that TONS of fun! I'll do some site research and post some things.
Walking the Riverwalk or taking the river barges is lots of fun (I just did both recently). There's always someting going on somewhere. No gambling, though. :(
I don't know when Retama Horse Racing opens, but that would also be fun. We're also about 3 hrs from the beach and about 2 hrs from Austin. ???
-
That sounds fun. Thanks for the glimps.

Here are a few photos of the Riverwalk...

I can't stand las Vegas because of all the smoke. How come you don't come to sunny Southern California where we have the good sense to ban smoking indoors?!?!?!?!?
-
Freemont Street works so well for those with all levels of energy. Those of us who are slower, can easily keep up with everyone else.
BUT, I love San Antonio and the River Walk area would be very easy for people to get around. It has a lot to do, just meandering along,window shopping, riding the boats,etc. Great food, too. I will go anywhere!
-
I am not fond of Vegas spent to much time in Reno in my past life, so casino's don't do much for me. Now San Antonio looks nice and May 11th is my birthday so you all could shower me with gifts while we are there...Boxman

All right all you admin and moderator types, just checking up on you to make sure you are all okay. Are you up to having two meets a year? I know it is a lot of work for you... we don't want to burn you out, WE NEED YOU!
:grouphug; :thx;
First, I love the idea of a Las Vegas Annual Meet tradition:
1. It is cheap! Good rates on airfares, reasonable rates for the chosen hotel (El Cortez with nice big rooms) especially for Sun pm through Thurs pm, and has activities - the casino, restaurants, bars.
2. Fremont Street is user friendly - contained and altered into a pedestrian mall.
3. There is plenty to do on Fremont Street - gambling (plenty of penny ante machines), freebie shows under the covered walkway, not to mention the light show itself.
4. Close proximity to the Strip, shows, preseason basketball, Hoover Dam, Grand Canyon and other outing for those wanting to see the sites. (Perhaps even an IHD charter bus someday)
Vegas was made for 'round the clock entertainment - I just loved coming downstairs in my pajamas, getting a cup of coffee and sitting down at a machine pressing that button until all of my... my... my coffee was gone. I think it would be difficult to find the same "open 24hrs a day" anywhere else. And it is Susie's place! And, hopefully Trina and Nick will be able to make it ever year.
:cheer: Let's go Vegas for the Third Annual IHD Get-together!!! :cheer:
Second, It was nice having a second meet, this year in Chicago and next year??? San Antonio was graciously offered by KellyT. This gives the group an "on-site" representative who can help locate a cheap but nice hotel close to the freebie attractions we want to spend time at. Riverwalk, a day trip to the Alamo :cowboy: , (Okarol, LA Lakers at San Antonio Spurs, maybe?), and Nuevo Laredo MX is just down the road apiece! Without taking away from KellyT's kind offer, is that the consensus on where we want to hold the second meet for 2009? I don't remember for sure, but during the voting last year wasn't Tennessee mentioned a bunch?
Finally, should there ever just be one meet a year, I vote for alternating between Las Vegas one year and somewhere else the next year (at least until everyone is burned out on Las Vegas, if burning out on Vegas is even possible).

San Antonio sounds great to me!!
You guys need to come south next time - the Caribbean!!!!!!!!
-
Oh, it's totally possible to burn out on Vegas! :rofl;
Driving out in the Texas Hill Country is also a possibility. It's beautiful out there and the antique shops are plentiful and fun.
-
Oh, it's totally possible to burn out on Vegas! :rofl;
That's not burnout, that's sheer physical exhaustion. We slept for a week and now we're ready to go again! :bandance;
:bow; Sluff, you don't know how bad I needed this post. :bow;
With no future trips in any stage of development, the wanderlust was beginning to eat me alive. :thx;
-
i like the idea of going someplace different next year. the idea of alternating between vegas and someplace else is a good one. if we are going to do 2 locations i think the 2nd location should be somewhere east-ish (is there such a word?) wherever we go, i'll be glad to help, and you can count on april (apple) and i being there with bells on, we had soooooooooooooooo much fun in vegas.
-
I like the idea of having Las Vegas established as a get together spot in October and then wandering the other one around the country. Texas is good because the last wandering get together was in Chicago. Then the following year somewhere. "eastish"
-
:cheer: Go, Texas!!! :cheer:
-
I'm thinking Vegas each year in October and every other meeting alternate places and I would love to do Georgia, or one of the Carolina's and maybe even New York. However we can only do so much in a year. I wouldn't mind doing the Pasadena CA either. We may not be able to make every trip but at least once a year we get a chance to visit and get different members involved.
-
:yahoo;
-
I like the California idea always wanted to take a convertible car on Highway 1along the mountain side, and the only place I have been out east was PA so anywhere else would be good. As long as I have the money, I'll come. I'd like to go where the most people will be.
-
OH MA GOD............. I FREAKIN LOVE "EASTISH"!!!!!!!!!
-
I will always be partial to Las Vegas. It was were the dream became a reality. Like Alene, I think it is a cheap place to get to and the hotel is priced well. But, I have always loved Vegas and we have been going there for 30 years. Never get tired of it. In fact, El Cortez gave us a coupon for two free nights in December and I think we will use it. My husband wants to go again.
BUT, I loved Chicago. We spent lots of time together. It was fun going to the breakfast room and meeting up with everyone. Just sitting and talking--we really didn't need any entertainment. We had Sluff! :rofl;
But there are so many good places to visit. San Antonio is a great place. The River Walk would be a good place to spend time. If we ever try for the East Coast, Mrytle Beach is a good location. Lots of great restaurants, tons of hotels, and lots to do. Not a bad drive from Virginia, Florida, Georgia, Tennesee, and of course the Carolinas. (Petey would like this location!) Maybe in '10. It is great to have these get togethers to look forward to. :2thumbsup;
-
Myrtle Beach does sound fun! My husband's been there and he said it was nice.
"Hi Paris" :waving;
-
I love Myrtle Beach...been going there since high school....fell in love many times at MB
-
come on flip, don't leave us hanging.....
-
many years ago...we used to spring break at Myrtle....less travel and fewer crowds
-
I absolutly love the idea of San Antonio, Texas!!!! The Riverwalk is beautiful!!! We would soooo be there! :flower;
-
You guys need to come south next time - the Caribbean!!!!!!!!
How about REALLY south??? :shy;
-
I like the idea of keeping Las Vegas as the October meet, and another time of the year for any of the other alternatives. Las Vegas is the place where our Vegas Princess Goofynina lit the place up!
-
I totally agree, Bajanne. Even though I never personally met Goofynina I, along with others, felt her spirit with us in Vegas!
My husband will come next time for sure!
-
Yea! Kelly AND her husband will be in Vegas next year----and Kelly will be there with her new kidney! I won't beable to keep up with her :2thumbsup;
:waving; Hi Kelly!
-
I would absolutely flip if we all met in San Antonio. :cheer: We could even plan a day trip from there to Austin (I live 20 miles north of Austin). Austin is more metro, but there is no lack of things to do there. There are so many things to do in San Antonio and the surrounding area. Kelly has voiced many of them and they are all great. We might also consider LBJ ranch which is a day trip event. It is the ranch on which President Johnson and his lovely wife lived for many years. The original house and land are there and they have bus tours during the day that take you all over the ranch and point out various interesting things and some historical items as well. I went many years ago and it was great. If we meet in May there may still be wildflowers out and Lady Bird Johnson opened a Wildflower Center where the acreage is dedicated to all the different varieties of wildflowers that bloom in Texas. It is beautiful in the Spring/Summer.
Las Vegas as an annual meeting place sounds exciting. I haven't been there since I was a child. I have never in my life gambled and it sounds kind of exciting although I am not much of a risk taker. If the price is right I would definitely be there as well ! I haven't taken a trip in years and it would be so good to meet everyone and do things with like-minded people. :yahoo;
-
I seem to have a lot to say on this subject! Newer members---the best thing I have done for myself during this journey, was to meet with members from here. I always put my family first, never gone on a trip without everyone (even though my husband and his brother go on a getaway every year together). I got selfish and went to the first meet up in Vegas last year. I am hooked! Yes, my name is Paris and I am addicted to IHD!! :rofl; Sometimes we need to do things for ourselves, and even though this could be money you wouldn't normally spend, it is worth more than therapy, counseling, etc. I am a big advocate for going to the meetups.
Graftgurl, I am looking forward to meeting you at the next get together :cuddle;

Atlantic City NJ has great casinos. And beautiful beachs and is very close to NYC and Philadelphia.
Just sayin.
Vegas is Ok. But so darn hot.
it was mentioned the Carrabean. :-)
Many all inclusive resorts out there where food drinkts and airafre is all included. (yes even booze)
The bigger the group the less expensive it is.
-
Has anyone ever thought about a Canadian gathering?? Is there enough of us, and do any of us live close??
-
Have it in the summer. I love to fish up there.
-

I agree, Texas is so hot and humid......
can't fish on the River Walk
-
Good thing this isn't a fishing trip. ;)
-
I wonder if the Make A Wish Foundation would consider sending us ALL on a Dialysis Cruise??
That would be a blast.
-
The Cruise would actually be a good idea, Rerun even if we pay for it. I bet Cap'n Sluff would go for it.
-
That would be a blast indeed...do I hear corporate sponsors anyone?
-
I love cruises! I'll do that for sure!
-
I'm sure good ole Davita will chip in.
-

That's why October was selected. Surprisingly enough, it was COLD this time. Highs in the 60s and 70s, and lows in the 50s and 40s. We are the proud owners of a new lined jacket and a new fleece! Who woulda thought.
-
I loved the cold!!! Wish I could have that kind of temperature all year round. Imagine living without perspiring!!!!
-
The cruise sounds like a great idea. Actually, Davita does sponser cruises. My clinic sent 2 people last year. They had to write an essay, or something. I could go and do the treatments :cheer: Either way, you could probably get a group rate...
-
Cool idea. Not sure if everyone could afford a cruise.
-
Hopefully I can go to Vegas and then I will have a shot of Vodka with Nero for Flip, well the shot of Vodka sounds good.
-
How about the Poconos in PA?
-
Lori Hartwell had mentioned again about maybe we could coordinate a meet-up with one of her patient education meetings - we should check the calendar on RSNHope.org and see if anything looks feasible. Might be fun.
-
How about the Poconos in PA?
It was talked about in chat of meeting in Pittsburg with Joe Paul, Paddbear, Myself, and a couple others in the PA/Ohio area for a weekend. That I could drive in about 7 hours from IL on a good sunny day.
-
I can do the Ohio/ Pennsylvania area. I am sitting in frozen eastern Ohio right this minute. I've been visiting my brother and sister for a week and am ready to go back to warmer weather!
-
If we decide on a definite "yes" for San Antonio in May 2009 let me know ASAP so that I can begin looking into hotels and activities. We can get combination tickets for both Sea World and Fiesta Texas if anyone is interested. There are really cool water parks at both locations! The Texas "wave pool" is rocking at Fiesta Texas!
I have a speaker in mind, as well. I just have to contact her. Bobbie Wager, AAKP President. She would be a great speaker and believe she said she'd do it (told a friend of mine). I haven't talked to her directly.
I'm sure Nursewratchet will pitch in and help me with some activities and organization, as well as anyone else in the S.A./Texas area that would like to help out.
-
I will help out if I can. I'm in the Houston area so not too close to SA - maybe 4-5 hours away.
-
I might be able to make one of these gatherings at some point and, wow, the airfares are incredible right now...
from my airport to:
Nashville TN $294
San Antonio TX $204 (woa!)
Myrtle Beach SC $275
Los Angeles CA $418
Daytona Beach FL $240
New Orleans LA $262
Savannah GA $240
Pittsburgh PA $181
Atlantic City - no flights from here? - might be 8 hours away by car
-
May? If I miss San Antonio, I will be so sad :'( Son's wedding May 9th and nephews graduation Memorial week end. I never have plans! Why is May so busy? I could skip my son't wedding---------well, maybe not a good idea. :rofl;
-
Any month is fine with me. And, no, you can't miss your son's wedding. That would be brutal!
Paris, did I read you're going to Paris for the entire month of Feb? I am soooo jealous!!!
-
The airfare for me to San Antonio in May looks like it would be about $320? Not sure why it's so high from So. Cal.
May would be tough because my daughter is graduating high school the first week in June and they have crammed in a million activities in May.
-
I get anywhere from 247 up for flights from Ontario to San Antonio. Round trip
-
Kellyt, that would be the lovely AlohaBeth. She leaves in a couple of weeks. Off to visit her friend and explore more of France. Ahh, what a life! I think she has taken her lead from Monrein! (that is a good thing!). Most of my activities revolve around IHD meet ups! :rofl;
-
Paris, you can plan a trip to visit me anytime! :bandance; It doesn't have to be an IHD meeting! Once I'm cleared for flight maybe I'll schedule a visit to you! Wouldn't that be fun! I have two more IVIG treatments and they are one in Feb and one in March. I'm working through January (maybe into the first two weeks of Feb).
Did I tell you I pulled up your address on Google Earth? Looks beautiful (aerial view, anyway. I can only see the top of your roof and some trees). :rofl;
-
So close, yet so far away for RichardMel to meet AlohaBeth
-
Don't trust Google Earth on my addy, the area I live has changed so much and Google hasn't updated the streets and views for over 3 years. :urcrazy;
If I see Joe paul in chat tonight, I'll have to ask who he was thinking of for a meet in the east in PA area.
-
She'll be back in a month and ready to party with Chris and Richard! :clap;
The picture on google is very accurate of my house. :thumbup;
-
Wasn't RichardMel planning a visit to France in the very near future (something about a secret rendezvous if I remember it right...)
-
Gonna need pictures if they meet :rofl; :rofl;
The picture AlohaBeth has on Facebook standing in front of the Eiffle Tower is very nice. So nice I had to tell RichardMel. Hope he gets Facebook out there :rofl;
Back to topic!
-
I am hoping she comes home! Chris and RichardMel are my bait to get here back here!
-
The only way I could even possibly attend any annual get togethers is if they are within driving distance. We can not afford to fly. Hotels are even iffy. Now, if there was one in Baltimore or Washington, DC, we could go. We'd just stay at my Mom's or my brother-in-laws.
-
I have always wanted to visit San Antonio!
-
pick a place and i'll try to show up to one of them. timing is everything this year. as of today i can get a flight to san antonio for $89 each way which shouldn't be a problem to come up with.
-
So close, yet so far away for RichardMel to meet AlohaBeth
Consider us lucky. ;)

I'm in. Whatever we need.
