They did my fistula surgery this morning and everything went well.  It's in my inside elbow area and is buzzing loud and clear. My arm feels a bit sore but nothing hard to take and the worst thing was the botched IV insertion which has left my right hand purple.  So, one small hurdle over. :beer1;

Good deal, Monrein. Don't forget to do your squeezing exercises, it will mature much faster.

Gee Boxman you mean I can't enter that weight lifting competition at the gym that I signed up for.  I'm crushed. :rofl; Thanks for the reminders. I promise to squeeze and not lift.  They told me that it might take longer for this one to mature because of all the drugs I've been taking for the past 23+years.  We'll see.

Sit down and take a deep breath before you take off the bandage.  They cut me from my elbow to my arm pit and I about passed out when I saw it.  I was fine before that.

Best of luck.

Rerun, that sounds like a nightmare.  I only have about a three inch slash across the inside elbow pit area.  Three steristrips and a small gauze cover it right now. Sounds like they had to bring your vein to the surface or something.  They told me that would be plan B if the vein seemed too deep.  Another year another scar. Lord we go through a lot.

Mine is on the wrist, about 1" long and hardly visible.

Hi Good news about your fistula, and hope your well on the way to recovery.  John wasn't told to listen for the buzz, we found that out for ourselves. He had to go to our local doctor to have the dressing change because he got it wet. The nurse at the surgery had never seen one before and jumped away when she felt the buzz.  However John's was put into the out side wrist, and the scar is just under an inch long.

Glad your fistula is buzzing away! I've had two fistulas and and neither of them ever made so much as a peep. I have a left upper-arm graft and it works (when it wants to). As for scars, the ones from the actual access aren't that bad. It's just the one big "scar" from me sticking the thing six days a week in different spots each time, since I can't do buttonholes with a graft. I've had a few curious questions, including one from a guy who thought I'd burned myself really badly. I hope your fistula works well for however long you need dialysis (some have lasted 30 to 40 years).

Monrein,  :waving;
Glad yours is buzzing. Dustin had 2 failed fistula surgeries they never did buzz and were put in by a Vascular surgeon. He still has his chest permcath and does very well with it. Talked about pd one time but like I told him if he is talkin about trying to get on the transplant list why bother when the permcath works great.

Lori, I'm so sorry that both of Dustin's fistulas haven't worked.  That was my fear going in too and it's awful to have any procedure and not get the expected result.  I have been lucky both this time and the last time I was on dialysis many years ago with my fistulas and I'm grateful.  My first cath didn't work and was changed after the first attempt to use it.
 Although I'm not a big fan of them, the catheters certainly do work to dialyze with and some people have them a long time.  As I understand it, it's a matter of how long a person has one and the risks are infection or damage to the vessel from long term use but if one can't get access through a fistula then thank god for the cath.  I hope he gets a transplant since he's decided to go for it  and that the wait isn't too long, not just because  of the cath but just so he can get back into his life and feel better.
Some people love doing pd and would never want to have to do hemo but the main thing I think is that we have several options since whatever our preferences are they don't always work out.
My fistula is getting stronger all the time but I'm still not sure about when I'll begin actually using it.

Best of luck to Dustin (and a big hug to you for all the support you give him).
