Dont let dialysis stop you...

I have just completed one month of physical therapy and I feel great on non-dialysis days. At first I would get on the treadmill and walk for 10 minutes and be winded and now I run the equivalent of about a mile on there and am doing a lot of weight training and it has helped a lot. Makes you feel good emotionally as well as physically . I start my gym membership next week and even though I cant solve my fatigue problems that come the day after im off the dialysis machine, the very next day I feel great, good enough to play baseball( a mens league here) which I do whenever im feeling up to it.

I dont go to the gym but have my own setup.

Usually walk 1 mile on dialysis days and then on non dialysis days I walk 2 miles warmup, then run 3 miles, then lift weights.  In the afternoons I try to ride 7-10 miles on the bike.

Aerobic and anaerobic exercise is important --both for the general population and even more so for people on dialysis.

Consuming a sufficient amount of protein and calories is also important for dialysis patients (1.2 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day; 35 calories per kilo of body weight per day).

I have a stationary bike and some weights here at home as well as belonging to the local gym.  I try to work out with the weights 3-days-a-week on mornings before dialysis and ride the bike for 40 minutes at night on the non-dialysis days.

The benefits from exercising regularly are numerous.

Dialysate flow (Qd)=600;  Blood pump speed(Qb)=315
Fresenius Optiflux-180 filter--without reuse
Fresenius 2008T dialysis machine
My KDOQI Nutrition (+/ -):  2,450 Calories, 84 grams Protein/day.

I do go to the gym for 2 hours after dialysis. I usually go after dialysis because on my days off, i do not feel as well. I do a mixture of weight training and cardio.

Why not just twist my arm....okay, okay, you talked me into it.  There is a Y opening up very close to me in a couple of weeks and I will be joining.  All systems a-go and I am ready.  Where are Hans and Franz?  I am ready to pump up  :boxing;

sometimes my wife gets a little frustrated with me for not making more of an effort to be more physically active. i get frustrated too, with myself, because i rarely have the energy to even go for a walk, let alone exercise. i tried to explain to her that sometimes, i feel like she would if she wore a winter coat with two 50-pound rocks in the pockets. it seems as if my muscles and body are in a constant state of accelerated deterioration. maybe that would change if i worked at it, but how do i get the energy to work at it if i have no energy to begin with?
i envy you folks who can run, life weights and such. i used to do hours of martial arts practice and teaching every day, for many years. now, 10 minutes of tai chi and i feel like i need a nap.
 o well.

This is the first time in a LONG time that I've been able to even try and excercise.  I think having a stroke has limited my mobility....and I always thought twice about excercising until recently I learned that I've started to develop osteo-arthritis in both of my knees and elbows.....  They told me that it was due to the long term steroids that I've been on.....  Nothing like arthritis to motivate me to get my ass in gear.....  :-)  I went to the local Y and asked for a financial assistance.....   I pay twelve bucks a month!!!!!  And I can't do much but let me tell you how much of a difference that little bit of exercise makes..... :-)  I start seeing a physical therapist in just a few weeks to start on a new therapy regiment that'll help my get physically fit and awesome!!!!  :-)  YAYYY!!!!!
