itchy skin and rash

need a little help here , my phosphorus level runs high 6.5 -7.5  One night I woke up and I swear I thought I had fleas or bed bugs , my skin was burning and severe itch which lead to heavy scratching, bleeding look like chicken pots

my neph thought it was high phosphorus lvl , I tried Benadryl and some topical cream , It seems to be subsiding I don't think anything I'm using is helping though , I find taking my clothes off at night while I'm in bed keep me cool



anyone experience this problem?

Hi Seaweed, do you have phosphate binders now?


I would start with keeping your skin extremely hydrated, I use coconut oil, others E45, vaseline/petroleum jelly etc.


You could try a mentholated cream for itchy skin. Vinegar also reduces itchy skin a bit.
And when your phos comes down, you'll be okay again.

There are numerous phosphorous binders.   You may want to have your MD switch you around until you find one that works.   

I was having trouble with #s in the 6's until my MD tried Auryixa.   It's iron based, and has be down in the 3.5-4.5 range.  Two side effects - stools as black as the ace of spades, and increased HGB (it looks like I may not even need Mircera or EPO).

My patients who have tried Auryxia really like it.  Velphoro is another iron based binder that is chewable.  Renvela is good binder, too, but I am having a hard time with assistance programs and some insurance companies have it listed as a tier 3 or 4 drug, even though it now has a generic.  Auryxia and Velphoro have good assistance programs if you cannot afford the copay.

A couple of the not too older Ladies (fellow Patients) at my clinic were telling me they take Turmeric, the spice, and it has stopped their itching.

I just bought a bottle and today added it to my daily pill boxes.  I won't know for a while yet.  Fingers crossed.

you would think after 4 years on PD i would have this nail down , i think i tried everything from chicken grease to 90 weight oil  , Renvela is what were using now 4 tablet each meal

my nep wanted me to tried this chew able , i realize i dont adhere to the best and may skip a tab.

i got upset at my nep one month i didn't believe that phos did anything  so i told her i wont take any on that month to see it went from 6.5 -to 7.3

I am glad to report that even only just a few days using one capsule of Turmeric daily my itchyness has abated, virtually GONE!!!!!

I first had to wonder if this can be attributed to the petroleum jelly I rubbed into my Lizard Skin, however the itching is also gone in the other areas that I did NOT use the Petroleum jelly. 

I am amazed at the change.

Renenvela generic (Sevelamer Carbonate) costs the same as Renvela.  My insurance company lists the generic as not in their formulary.  Did this in December last year. I panicked since every time I eat I take 4 tablets.  Called Aetna and was told while I couldn’t get the generic I could get Renvela.  I guess Aetna thought if they can’t save money on the generic they might as well dispense the name brand.  I checked in app GoodRX and the prices were the same for generic and name brand.  Some one told me generics typically charge the same price for 2 years then begin to gradually lower the price, big price drop occurs when a third manufacturer enters the market.

Wish that price thing werre true for insulin.  The pens are stupidly high priced so I had the bright idea of having her Dr write for the old style bottles.  Guess what?  That are insanely priced also!   Were screwed, she HAS TO HAVE her insulin.

My sister swears by Turmeric as a cure for practically everything. Not just for humans, she had our father feeding it to his dog when she was ill! My sister is even taking it for cancer! (Along with the prescribed medicine, she is not stupid.)

Small point on using Turmeric from my sister: If you are taking the stuff neat, you need to add a pinch of ground black pepper to "activate" it. If you take capsules they should already include this, but check the ingredients before buying as some of the cheaper ones don't. Without the pepper the Turmeric does not work nearly as well.
