Dr. Jason Fung is a Canadian Nephrology Doc..he is changing the lives of many very sick diabetes and kidney patients with a LCHF and fasting diet.
For years he promoted the High Carb advice that all Nephs give to patients, and learned how bad it was in keeping them ill, and adding more insulin all the time. a NO WIN situation ( this is for T2s. T1s must take insulin)
Now he is very active in social media with his web site, blog, you tube videos ( there are 6 long ones on locoing weight and reversing diabetes to protect the kidneys)
He is NOW an invited guest speaker on another site, with a feature called " ASK Dr. FUNG…" where members can ask anything and get a reply …tho its has a 30 day trail, and after that yu can choose to join for $9. mopmth for services like this, and many more, or just see all the free inf they keep available.
http://www.dietdoctor.com/member/ask-dr-jason-fungI am a member and I asked ABOUT a DIET for CKD Stage 4- protein- Magnesium. Here is his answer. Bascially EATING the right foods can provide magnesium when we with CKD can't take OTC Mg pills like SLoMag and MagOx or other brands. , and must use caution in too much topical/skin use of Mg oils or Epsom Salt baths.
Notice he does NOT give medical advice, and carefully skirts the question of how much to take ( his patients DO use ES baths and Milk of Magnesia) He ALSO does not explain that ALL blood carries is 1% of Mg, so you can "appear" normal in a serum test, but are NOT normal, as he says, because Mg STAYS intercellular..and is pulled to the place needed ( like preventing heart attacks or to stop muscle spasms) This is why getting too much Calcium, and not a balance of Mg is dangerous, especially for CKD patients.

Hello Dr. Fung, as a CKD, Stage 4 (eGFR 29) patient I determined I was low in Magnesium, and knew not to take OTC pills.I see you have patients use Epsom Salts and MoM, so I explored 'safer' dosing for myself.
I began utilizing a pico-ionic liquid supplement-added to water: ReMag brand, Pure Mg gels for transdermal use provides 66mg daily. My LCHF diet is plant based, with eggs and limited full fat dairy, with organic hemp seed protein, providing 100% RDA of Mg via 6 tbl a day of hulled seeds. So I can easily get 400-700 of recommended Mg.
I don't want to over do it with food & liquid supplement, & skin sprays. I know the gut failsafe is a light laxative effect.
I NEED Mg for health, and actually feel the many benefits after just 4 weeks use! But I want to understand if I CAN overdo it with too much of ALL methods? (I eat spinach, almonds and other Mg containing foods daily)
Since there are no visible symptoms of kidney damage, should I keep track of the total Mg consumed daily?
SInce MOST medical staff and Mds don't say anything but "kidney patients can't take Mg"..how can we safely get this essential mineral safely?
Thank you in advance.
Dr. Jason Fung: In kidney disease, it is possible to become Mg overloaded, although it is very rare and usually reverses quickly.
You should consult your physician and he can always measure your blood Mg levels, but a normal level does not necessarily mean that your body levels are normal.
I would generally think that dietary sources of Mg are best.
