being thankful!

Hello....I've been doing in-center for almost 5 years now....I go to work and have a fulltime job too!  I think that I'm luckier than a lot of people; have a decent paying fulltime job w/ insurance; unfortunately I have CKD and do Dialysis; but unlike a lot of people; I can get up and move around on my own two feet without the use of a walker or wheelchair....I truly am lucky!

HOWEVER!!!!....last Friday...at work, we were doing some remodeling of our cubicle area in the office.  someone moved two or three of the plastic computer chair mats that almost every office has; and I hit them and fell on the floor...just like walking (or falling) on a sheet of ice!  Well, after the ambulance ride to the hospital; the x-ray'd my knee and I broke it in 5 places!  Had surgery on Saturday to put humpty-dumpty back together again...and now I'm stuck using a walker and wheelchair for the next 6 months!!!!!!!!

anyway, the point of this is.....I truly have more of any understanding of my fellow patients that have to use a walker or wheelchair....EVERYDAY!  How the hell do you do it!  those people are my new founded HEROs!   I've never been so miserable; not being able to walk or move around; or drive.  Going to the bathroom is a horrible experience!  I have new respect for those of you; who have to use wheelchairs / walkers everyday!

I am very sorry for your bad luck and I do hope "things" are getting better for you soon !
... During the time I needed a wheelchair every day of the week, I noticed how very unfriendly life can be for wheelchair-users,
especially when they try to venture and "wheel" outside the house:
 getting on the pedestrian-walk has to be planned almost like a "battlefield" action,
getting through a shop with all its uneven hurdles can be another huge challence,
every unevenness on the road or shop or anywhere else can be very trying... and ways how to avoid it have to be found...
... and every unevenness comes over as very dangerous... and living in a flat on the first floor can be the biggest hurdle of them all,
especially when sitting in a wheelchair and looking down to the ground floor, wondering how to get down there in one piece...
... and afterwards, how to get up to the first floor again in one piece... with the wheelchair...
... and so on .. such images can "stick in the mind" for a very long time and they can return in nightmares...

... I can't tell you how glad I was when I did not need the wheelchair any longer... but I am sure you get the idea...

Broke your knee in 5 places, good grief. I have only had the occasional need for a cane and walkers scare me to death, so I know where you are coming from.
Sure hope the knee gets better soon. How long does it takes, do you know?

Oh my, how my heart goes out to you coping with a broken knee.  Throughout my life I have been an occasional wheelchair/crutches user due to various operations.  It's always brilliant to get back to walking without these aids.  I had 2 knee replacements many years ago and thought this was bad enough to get through.  Every day will get a little better, sometimes it does not feel like this.  Just keep your spirits up.

Well; since it is a 'work injury' because I was in the midst of doing my job; so Workman's Comp is paying 100% of all my hospital bills and medical equipment (i.e. wheelchair; walker; etc....) and they are paying for all my medicines associated with it (pain pills)...! 

However; the company that I work for is sort of a "family" business.  My nephew owns the company; and I work for him; but he is not making me go through Workman's comp to get my paycheck; he is paying me directly as if I was there working!!!!  That is great because getting only 80% of my pay would have sucked!  Not to mention; the first check would have taken up to 4 weeks to get. 

I have been working from home a little bit too; to help out; I have the ability to link in to my computer @ work; and still perform some of my responsibilities to help out; also he help me from going crazy!  One can only watch so much TV!!!!

Good morning!  Just to let you all know; I am still 'limping around' at home; using a wheelchair and a walker.  I had my 2nd knee surgery last Tuesday and am starting to feel better and stronger.  Go the DR this Thursday to get stitches out (the 1st surgery had 22 staples in it...yeck!!!!!). 

But I'm really getting the hang of this wheelchair thing; and I am starting to use the walker more and more to build up my strength.  Still cannot bend my knee up 4 inches but I'm getting better.   It is a tough row to hoe; but I'm getting there!
