Hello,
Four days ago on Wednesday I had the tassio-lines fitted on my chest and had some bleeding (just a little weeping) on Thursday and Friday from the site where the two leads exit the skin.
On Saturday evening I had my first 70 minutes of dialysis. Today on Sunday I woke up to find a little more weeping under the fresh bandage. There is no leakage from the second incision above.
My question is now: is this just the initial weeping until it heals, aggravated perhaps by movement?
Should I apply another more absorbing patch over the site until my second dialysis-session on Tuesday or should I panic?
I would appreciate to know if anyone has any experience of this.
Thanks from Kristina.

Sorry Kristina, I don't remember much of the time with a Cath. Don't panic though (no point, and seeps energy) I would call the hosp or clinic, and ask.

I started out with nothing and I still have most of it left

1983 high proteinloss in urine, chemo, stroke, coma, dialysis
1984 double nephrectomy
1985 transplant from dad
1998 lost dads kidney, start PD
2003 peritineum burst, back to hemo
2012 start Nxstage home hemo
2020 start Gambro AK96

still on waitinglist, still ok I think

Yes, call the clinic and ask.  Mine were (plural) always read and crusty but no fresh blood.  Doesn't hurt to call and ask.  They may have you run over and change if for you.  How far away is your dialysis clinic?

At least call the clinic . I am guessing its just bleeding from the wound but better to be safe and have it checked.

Not sure what type of cath you have, new word to me.

My PD cath is about half-way between left the breast/nipple and center of chest.  That area is numb on the surface from nerve damage during my by-pass in '06.  I've had a lot of 'stretching' of the hole cause I couldn't feel it pulling while hooked up doing exchanges.  It was always well redened on one side and every month my PD Nurse would cauterize it again.  Didn't hurt until she got down inside,  THEN the sting began!

One of the other PD Nurses taught me to tape down a 'loop' of the hose on top of the gauze dressing so the tape held the hose much better as well as holding the dressing in place.  With so much more hose in contact with the tape it couldn't 'pull' against the site.  If you were to look straight at my dressing the hose under the tape would look almost like a lower case e.   Far sturdier than just the short bit that we usually tape down.

No more irritation of the site from hose movement.  No more cauterizing.   Only took me almost a year to learn.  But I'm a guy, we don't read directions.  And we be kinda slow, sometimes.

Hope this helps, or at least maybe gives you ideas.

Take Care,

Thank you Cassandra, Rerun and obsidianom
and thank you CharlieB53 for your very clever tips of how to do the dressing of the wound!
I did it exactly as you described it and for the first time the wound has stopped hurting me,
because the new way of dressing it stops the constant aggravation and assists the healing of the wound.
You can't imagine how grateful I am about this clever tip, because it gives me a chance
to recover again from the operation without too much aggravation.
Thanks again from Kristina.

Thanks again Charlie53 for your very helpful advice,
Taking your advice assisted me to have my first pain-free day today and I am very grateful for that !
Of course, the doctors offered me to take pain-killers, but I have always refused
because pain-killers would reduce my natural kidney-function rapidly...
When I refused the offer of taking pain-killers after the tassio-catheter was "put in",
the doctor who operated my tassio-catheter thought,
that refusing to take any pain-killers at all times might have been one of the reasons,
why my natural kidney function kept going for so many added years...

Just passing on what one of my PD Nurses taught me.

Glad it helps.

Dr's determined that I have gout in both knees, hips, shoulders, wrists, thumbs, and beginning into the fingers.  Gave me Prednisone,  IT IS WORKING!!!!  I can move all my joints, not even a wince any longer.  But I have gained back 15 of the 40 pounds I lost.  I'm sure I'll lose it again once the dose is reduced again, or stopped.

The 50 mic Fentanyal patch I wear may also have something to do with it.   But I'm good now.  Which is far better than I've been for the last, ....... 7 or 8 months.  I've been seeing the Pain Specialist all summer, he tells me that fentenyal is the ONLY pain med that can be prescribed for me because of my kidneys.  All traditional Narcs wear on the kidneys.   I like the fentenyal patch as I do not feel tranked, no fuzziness, druggedness, it just works.  I still have a bunch of morphine tablets, I hated them, made me sick to my stomach, and didn't stop the pain, just made me stupid enough that I didn't care so much, so I haven't taken them unless there was no other way.  Not good.

If you have pain, talk to your Dr's about fentenyal, it works.  No one should have to suffer through pain, it wears on you, takes a toll on your state of mind, and I wouldn't doubt that the pain slows healing speed.  Attitude is critical to well being, and it is hard to maintain a good attitude when you hurt so much.

Just my opinion, but I bet if tested, it will prove true.

Thanks again Charlie B53,
I shall ask my doctor as soon as possible about these options
and I shall also try to see a pain specialist about it.
It would be lovely if I could take pain-killers
which would not damage my little kidney-function...
Thanks again from Kristina.

Kristina, Most narcotic pain pills are safe for kidneys as they are metabolized by the liver. In reality it doesnt matter anyway once you start dialytsis as the kidneys arent doing much anyway. My wife is on ver high doses of narcotics for years and she still urinates a lot despite dialysis and her kindeys havent changed much in the past 3 years. So dont worry about narcotics if you need them/
