Ok, so if all goes well I will be able to use my fistula the week after next. My doctor told me to apply the emla cream 4 HOURS before dialysis. This seems way too early for me. When do most of you apply it?

One hour before someone stick the needles in your arm.  4 hours is way to early.

Dailysis patient for since 1999 and still kicking it strong.  I was called for a transplant but could not get it due to damage veins from extremely high blood pressure.  Have it under control now, on NxStage System but will receive dailysis for the rest of my life.  Does life sucks because of this.  ABOLUTELY NOT!  Life is what you make it good, bad, sick, or healthy.  Praise God I'm still functioning as a normal person just have to take extra steps.

1 to 1.5 hours is best. However some people need a bit longer. try it out in advance yourself if possible to guage your own speed.
We dont use it at all. We find that if I just puncture with a quick push it doesnt hurt my wife much at all with sharp 15 guage needles. Everyone is different.

An hour is usually fine
Since my dialysis session is 7.30am there is NO way I'd get up at  3.30am to apply it!!!
