Why Do We Embrace Victimhood???

One of the things that I get tired of hearing is this "Oh woe is me" attitude.  Someone like Soda has every right to whine......  Just remember, there are many more of us than there are of them, us and our friends, along with neighbors.  Start demanding what you want from these people, it is YOUR life, not their life.  Billions of dollars per year is being paid in your name for these clowns and old "Millions" Thiry to take care of and help you, not abuse you.  Tell your friends and neighbors how you are being treated.  Yes, old "Millions" gives out a lot of money, but, he does not have votes at the ballot box.  When one of these jerks or clowns abuses someone on dialysis, have the rest of the folks on dialysis stand against the abuse, what are they going to do, kick out the whole clinic, kick out people on private insurance, I think not.......  Yes, they may try to get even with you and others, but, there are ways of getting even with them.    The folks that have private insurance or money have a duty to stand up to these idiots.  I do not think old "Millions" would like it if the private insurance people were pissed off about his crappy care or abusive staff.  My clinic does not have these issues, because they treat people as adults, not infants.  At Davita, I used to bring a big jug of cold water and peanuts to my treatments, that really pissed them off, do you think I cared?  We need to get as many people on home dialysis as possible, so that people like Soda can have Nocturnal treatments at his center.  Do not let these people punk you out.  What they are doing to us is UNACCEPTABLE!!!!!

The patients at my clinic do stand up to the staff.  I don't think they would get away with harm to us.  My bitch is the smell.  Sometimes it reeks of sewer.

NUDXUFAN, I do understand your concerns however, it is against the law for D staff to mistreat a patient unless they want that patient filing a lawsuit.  If a patient is being abuse, he or she should report it to the administrator of the D center.  If the administrator does not do anything about it, he or she should report it to the state and trust and believe the state will visit that center.   

When I was in-center, the D-staff did not abuse anyone.  They may have made mistakes that got them cursed out but they didn’t abuse anyone in my eyesite.  I, for one, will not tolerate that.  I will get them fire in a quick minute.  The staff know that.  I have attended about two centers of Davita in different areas and found the staff to be very polite and helpful.  So I’m not sure where you are getting this from.  I am still with Davita home care and really don’t have any problem expect my nurse and I will bump heads once in a while.

That said, all due respect but your post sounds a little distrubing unless this is something that is happening outside of the USA.   We in America have laws that the D staff must follow or the center can get in big trouble whereas the center can close down.   Where is the place you speak of and who is in charge?  I will personally write a letter to the state and have it checked out.

I live in Ohio and I am glad that has been your experience. However, that is not the experience for everyone.  Go to Dialysis Associates and you will hear a vastly different story.

I think (and this is a view from the UK where we have less patient choice) that a lot of my fellow dialysis patients are afraid of making waves or making an official complaint, fearing it will make them unpopular, subject to worse treatment and made to feel uncomfortable.
I tend to have a rant straight away if I get upset about my treatment but i am younger than the average patient.

I don't begrudge anyone their story. I read the stories on Dialysis Advocate or through the internet generally, here on IHD, and I think, that could have been me. If anyone has walked the golden dialysis path it has been me but on the question of nature vs nurture, on the question would I have thrived no matter where I lived, I come down firmly on the nurture side of the divide.

If I had lived somewhere else, if I had run afoul of a capricious system, I would not be here today or if I were here I could have any one of these stories.

I am a squeaky wheel, but I am not the patient. I have gone to bat for Jenna many times when I felt she wasn't getting good care.
I understand that some centers are better and some are worse. Some patients are higher functioning, others highly challenged.
I don't think it's a matter of embracing victimhood. It can be acceptance or giving up or coping - whatever it takes.
