Big day today for my wife and I. We "graduated " from sharps to blunts for buttonholes. VERY SMOOTH today.
We are using Stuart Motts facial exfoliater for the scab removal and cleansing. What an improvement from previous sharp pick to remove scab. Last time we did buttonholes we did the sharp pick and the holes gradually got bigger and lead to a minor infection. Now the holes are very small and not being traumatized each time we remove the scab. It looks so much better. Thank you,Stuart.   
 Also thank you HemoDoc for your input in some of the protocol we use this time including wearing mask and covering holes with guaze during dialysis rather than tape. We also switched to hibiclens from betadine to prep. We hope this time for NO INFECTIION as our nephrologist HATES buttonholes and threatened us with all kinds of dire consequences from using them.  We dialyze 5 to 6 times per week on a short fistula so buttonholes are really the only sane way to go.

Congrats to you both.  D is so much less stressful to me when hubby has blunts in.

Hubby has been doing buttonholes for 7 years with no infections at all.  Can't understand why nephs wouldn't like them.  Much easier than sharps all the time.

ND:
IU Nephrology has said that buttonholes are better than sharps and has found that Betadine harbors infections......  ChorlaPrep is outstanding for preventing infections.....  In addition, to get rid of scabs, use Vitamin E lotion, makes it very easy to get rid of scabs......  Do exactly what Stuart Mott tells you......  My IU Nephrologist HATES, HATES infections and hospitals........  Each buttonhole that you created needs at least 7 sticks with sharps(IU sticking tech-34 years experience)  "The IU tech is the best sticker in the clinic." -IU RN supervisor-35 years of experience.........  The IU Nephrologist drills us on infection control every clinical visit and I am not kidding.  The IU staff is like an all-star team....  You are correct, button holes are the way to go, :)
