Mobile dialysis helps patients on the go

By Ryanne Radford
rradford@hintonparklander.com
Monday February 05, 2007

Hinton, Alberta, CANADA --- The start of a non-profit organization means freedom for those suffering from kidney disease and failure.
“This will truly enhance their quality of life,” said Nancy Verdin, founder and president of the Travelling Dialysis RV Association.
Access to this travelling dialysis treatment will mean patients requiring hemodialysis can take their families along on camping vacations without the worry of trying to book a bed at another hospital.
“Beds in other towns aren’t always available,” she explained.
The association is a newly founded non-profit association, based out of Red Deer. The association has purchased a holiday trailer that is equipped with everything a patient would need to complete their dialysis treatment as well as four beds for friends or family members.

Dialysis is a form of treatment for patients with kidney failure. This treatment is required a minimum of three days a week and takes up much of the patient’s time.
Verdin, who is a dialysis patient herself, said she is excited about the program.
“It’s a chance for myself and other people to have the freedom to travel on our own terms,” she said.
The renter is responsible for the trailer while borrowing it, however Verdin said they are provided with extensive instructions on how to use the equipment as well as several contacts in case of technical or medical emergencies.
Hemodialysis is a form of treatment where the patient is attached by needles to a machine that circulates their blood through an artificial kidney called a dialyser. People who are interested in using the travel trailer can book it for May until October as the trailer is not yet winterized.
The trailer is properly disinfected after every use also and, Verdin said, each user must have blood work done before hand to ensure the trailer is not contaminated.
The Travelling Dialysis RV Association was made possible by a number of people and organization including the Northern Alberta Renal Program, the University of Alberta Hospital and Christine Franke of Hinton.
To book the travelling dialysis RV or for more information visit www.travelingdialysisrvassociation.com or call Nancy Verdin at 403-346-1706.
Verdin said she hopes to expand the association to include several RVs in the future.

I liked this idea and got excited until I saw that they have ONE trailer in their inventory and it is not the drivable kind, you need a truck or SUV to pull it. :( This is a good idea but there business plan needs work. I mean they have ONE trailer in their inventory? They need some corporate sponsorship.

Also I noticed the press release states the organization PURCHASED the RV, but then I read on the site:

"To date Travelaire Canada has generously donated a 20’ Westwind Trailer." They only have ONE in their inventory so what is it? Was it donated or purchased? They need to get their story straight.

Well trust me it's a good idea, but they did not start the business the right way. So you can always start your own. I do not see their business model working. It's a fantastic idea but it needs to rethink-ed/reworked.

Yeah, and it's in Canada. A company providing this in the US would be a good service.

Sure I am up for this, now we just need to find the capital for a few RV's or get some donations of RV's and some donations of dialysis machines. I would like for them to retrofitted to have a wheelchair lift on the RV's.

It really is a good idea, I just wondering if the market is there for this. I mean the "renters" would have to be home hemo patients and that segment is already small. How about for a name: www.openroaddialysis.com or www.dialysisadventure.com

Donations Donations Donation. I have no money...LOL

www.LifeOnWheels.org  or www.webringyoulife.org

What would the minimum investment be?  A million or so per unit, 4 units to start, increasing to 100 unit goal. Definitely would need big time corporate sponsorship, too big of an adventure for us alone.

I don't know. You have over 700 members here.  At 5 bucks each that would be 3500 dollars. Oh neve rmind we are having problems getting premium members, much less taking stock in a business venture.  Can I be the first one to buy stock in your company?

WOW REALLY! Let's do the math shall we? Humans typically breathe between 12 and 20 times per minute, so for sake of argument let's say you take a breath 15 times every minute.

15 breaths x 60 (60 minutes in an hour) = 900 breaths in an hour
24 hours in a day 24 x 900 = 21,600 Breaths in ONE DAY
21,600 x $60 per Premium Membership = $1,296,000 Dollars PER DAY!

DAMN, IHD made me a MILLIONAIRE!! Yippee!!!

Well Sluff it looks like we will have that venture capital for the "RV" business very soon now.

Wouldn't it just be much cheaper and easier to rent a regular RV with a NxStage and Pure Flow already on board?  Experienced dialyzors can probably learn NxStage in just a few days.

Yeah. Sluff I know you were kidding me.  But if you ever do decide to offer shares in business let me know.  I would love to be involved in something.

I don't think a PureFlow would be a good idea on a RV, I think hanging bags would be ideal for an RV for a road trip. But yeah I agree that an experienced dialyzor can learn it in a few days.

... I don't think a PureFlow would be a good idea on a RV, ...

Why not?  The weight difference in the Pure Flow packs and the bags for a week long trip would be tremendous -- for an extended trip even more so.  When Mike goes to Miami next month for three and 1/2 weeks, he is planning to take the Pure Flow and only a few cases of bags for back up.  If that's not a good idea, we need to know ahead of time so we can make arrangements for delivery of enough bags.
