I think I'm coming up with a cold and out of being naiive, I popped an advil without reading the label which says please consult with physician if you have kidney disease.

I looked up the active ingredients ipubofren and pseuephedrine and found that it raises blood pressure and decreases urine output. Great. Now I think my 10% kidney function will reduce to 0 even faster.

I feel like crap :(

Yes, one of the real bummers about ESRD is the limited meds you can take when you feel like cr@p.

 :grouphug;

I hope you get through this just fine, though.

Just ask your doc what you can have and he will give you a list.

You will be fine just this once.  Don't worry.

I freak out way too easily.. can't you tell?  :P

Thanks everyone for the comments. I think anxiety really puts a toll on my health...
Before everyone told me not to worry, I swear I thought I had short of breath and high blood pressure.

Now I'm fine.. and the advil fixed my sinuses. Won't ever take another one though. I heard tylenol is renal friendly

One of my dialysis nurses told me take what you need, but then I have 0 kidney function.  I get heart palpitations from everything but Tylenol.

Jadey my suggestion for you is to do what I do.  I NEVER take any meds (over the counter) or use any herbs that people suggest for the kidneys unless I've called my Neph's office and asked his nurse to find out from my doctor if it's ok to use.

I make a strict rule of that and have been surprised how many things are not renal friendly.  For example I was taking over the counter Bilberry capsules for my eyes and found those are not renal friendly.  I was told Tylenol is ok to use but you have to make sure you follow directions because over use can cause liver disease.   Become anal when it comes to what you put in your body.  You're worth it!!!

A few months after I had my fistula created, I was experiencing a lot of pain, so much so that I made an emergency appt with the vasc surgeon for the following Monday.  In the meantime, the nurse told me to take THREE Aleves for the pain.  Now, she obviously knew that my renal function was bad since I had a fistula, so that goes to show that using this sort of med just once will be OK.

It's good that you get nervous about such things because that characteristic might well save your life one day.

Other posters have made good suggestions.  The next time you see your neph, ask him for a list of meds you are allowed to take for specific maladies like pain or a stuffy nose.

Yes, I agree.  Stop worrying about one pill.  Long term use is a bad idea for kidney patients, but once is extremely unlikely to do any damage.  Do remember that the warnings on packages are there as CYA notes.  The makers must guard themselves against lawsuits and the warnings are printed so they don't get sued.

If you still don't feel reassured, check out the tags on your hairdryer.  There would be no need to print "DO NOT USE IN SHOWER" on them if someone clueless hadn't sued them after doing exactly that.

I take ibuprofin once in a while and none of my medical providers has had a problem with it. They work better than anything else for me if I get a headache. The key is "once in a while." I probably take one ibuprofin tablet two or three times a year.

good to hear all your responses!

I will be much more careful from now on.. there are so many things I used to take for granted and now I value very much. Eating and taking whatever I want is one of them.
