Missed my last dialysis treatment and it hurts to breath, my lungs feel heavy, and there is a crackle in them when I breath. So yeah, off to the ER.

Just curious why did you miss your last treatment? I know this doesn't have to do with the subject but per your signature KTV is a little low so it sounds like you aren't getting enough dialysis as well which maybe leading to some of your issues, good luck!

Well I am fine now it seems. Turns out I had too much fluid on me. It got hard to breath so I went to the ER. They kept me there for seven hours and then let me go at 5:30am. They told me to go to my dialysis treatment the next day. I loved the ER doctor. I said to him "So, I can hardly breath, when I lay down I can't breath at all, and your telling me to go home, go to bed, and good luck?" He said "Yeah, pretty much."

%$#@ that ER.

I know its my own fault....and as I was writing this my dietitian just gave me a lecture.

PaganD, don't feel bad about it.  Im sure alot of people here have missed a session or two.  They use to get on to J. too, when he wasn't doing what he was told!  You are not alone in this mistake, just don't miss very many more, cause you can see what trouble it causes you!

Glad you are okay!

I don't know if anyone else has this problem, or if it's just me.  I don't miss treatments.. ever.. because missing a treatment, a clinic, or doing anything that hasn't been ok'd is considered non-compliance, and any act of non-compliance is grounds to be taken off the transplant list.  The doctors tend to hold this over my head, as I wasn't exactly compliant as a teenager.  You would think, considering that I was a teenager more than 15 years ago, they'd let up a bit.

If I went to the ER like that here, I'd probably be told the same thing.  There is no dialysis in the hospital, at least not yet.  They're still building it and say it should be ready in the spring.  I doubt they'd try to find someone to go into the unit that we do have after they've closed for the night.  I'd be told to go in first thing in the morning.

We have a vascular surgeon, who'd probably be called in for something like that..

Me with Baron von Fresenius

« Reply #15 on: October 01, 2011, 11:27:08 PM »

Ahh, the old fluid overload. I had that happen a few months ago and I thought I was gonna die! It was so bad they kept me in ICU overnight and stuck me on a dialysis machine immediately. I also had to be on oxygen for over 24 hours. At the time I had normal urine output, and I never took off much on dialysis (I was also blessed to be off of dialysis for six months not too long before this happened), but the fluid snuck up on me. I'm a lot more careful now when it comes to fluid removal.

Last time I was at the hospital they brought a guy in who wasn't on oxygen but was on a non rebreather, I've never had the fluid issue and hope I never do, it sounds horrible.

Very interesting  everytime I go to ER I am admitted  they say I am to complex of a case to send home  even though I have requested to go home,  I usually appreciate it that they don't because I am usually requiring some type of treatment,  and this might sound bad but sometimes its nice just having someone take care of me for once.  selfish huh

No, that's not selfish.  That's perfectly understandable, and it is also smart.  If they say you need to be in the hospital because your case is "complex", it's probably best to stay.  I think you probably know in your gut what is the right thing to do.
