so how long do you get to keep your social security disablity payments once you get a transplant? (I am not talking about SSI or medicare) Hopefully someone can tell me about their personal experience...I have been googling but can't seem to find the answer to my exact question...

Born with autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease
1995 - AV Fistula placed
Dec 7, 1999 cadaver transplant saved me from childhood dialysis!
10 transplant years = spleenectomy, gall bladder removed, liver biopsy, bone marrow aspiration.
July 27, 2010 Started dialysis for the first time ever.
June 21, 2011 2nd kidney nonrelated living donor
September 2013 Liver Cancer tumor.
October 2013 Ablation of liver tumor.
Now scans every 3 months to watch for new tumors.
Now Status 7 on the wait list for a liver.
How about another decade of solid health?

Depends on your health.  I was sent a standard review.  They looked at my med records, contacted my transplant neph, and I'm still getting disability because of the complications.  (Guts hanging out makes it hard to work.)  Now that that is fixed, I expect to lose it with the next review, or hopefully sooner if I can get a job.

I read on SSA's website that standard transplantees are automatically qualified for disability for one year after transplant. So you may need to re-qualify after one year.

I'll see if I can find the page and post the link.

I was told that once you are transplanted you are considered cured and normal again and you get 1 year to get a job.

That is one reason I'm scared to get a transplant.....  I'd be thrown to the dogs in one year.  In this economy?  Really??

SSD has a generous policy if you are able to return to work. 

It also appears that you will be entitled to 9 additional months once you return to work before the benefit ends.  Also, they look to see your income to determine when to terminate benefits after that 9 month stage.  If you are working part time, you may keep your benefits longer.

Girl meets boy with transplant, falls in love and then micromanages her way through the transplant and dialysis industry. Three years, two transplant centers and one NxStage machine later, boy gets a kidney at Johns Hopkins through a paired exchange two months after evaluation.  Donated kidney in June and went back to work after ten days.

Lawphi you are right...right now I am working on what is called a 'Trial Work Period" social security runs this. So the 9 months while I am working I will still get my disability...while I am doing this they will not review my case and determine my eligibility for another few months...keep you posted as I work through this...hopefully it may help someone else. If you go to your local social sercurity office they can set up up with a trial work period. You just have to mail a copy of your paycheck stubs to them....  :)
