Sorry if this is TMI...but Ladies on Dialysis i have a question...does being on Dialysis stop or lessen your Menstrual Cycle??...last month my period came late and was extremely light, almost non existent....this month it was supposed to be here like 10 days ago..and has not came yet (and no there is absolutely no way i am pregnant) lol

I've heard that it's not uncommon for that to happen! Mine hasn't been very regular either, though I haven't been as lucky to have it so light and nonexistent, haha. But I wouldn't worry! Totally normal for it to be...well, not normal, lol.

thanks..i will talk to my nurse on Tuesday when i go again...last two times i went both my techs were guys and it was kinda awkward to bring that topic up with them........the "light and nonexistent" period may be perhaps the 1 upside to this whole Dialysis thing lol

This is common.  Periods seem to be deemed a non-essential service by the body when more serious stuff is going on, ESRD being a biggie, and it just stops (happens to anorexics too).  I had about one period a year for 5 years on D and after my transplant, there it was a couple of days later...a bit early to be considered convenient since I was still recovering.

Living donor transplant (sister-in law Kathy) Feb. 2009
First failed kidney transplant removed Apr.  2009
Second trx doing great so far...all lab values in normal ranges

I have stopped having my period entirely since I started dialysis.  I have also been told that this is normal.  Good to hear that it will return after transplant - but then it will probably be time for perimenopause.   >:D

I wonder if I am premenopausal. While on dialysis my period came when ever it felt like...28 days...20 days... none at all. And they were always very light. Now with the transplant nothing much has changed as far as my period goes. I spot in between and they are still very light.

wow interesting.....yeah before starting Dialysis my period was pretty normal...it usually came on or around the same day every month ( i am 25 years old by the way) well as i said, maybe that is the one good thing about being on this crappy Dialysis.

I have been on hemo dialysis since July 2008 and I still have mine and some months are really bad, Ive been checked and nothing wrong.  I think the heparin makes it worse.

I'm 47.  Kidneys failed 5 years ago.  I have not had a period in so long, and I don't miss them!  :2thumbsup;  Dialysis? menopause?  both...  I don't know....

Thanks for this thread - I had wondered this myself!

10 years with transplant normal period took birth control to regulate it
now that I am on D very light even nonexistent.....hopefully it will come back!

Should have frozed my eggs!

10 transplant years = spleenectomy, gall bladder removed, liver biopsy, bone marrow aspiration.
July 27, 2010 Started dialysis for the first time ever.
June 21, 2011 2nd kidney nonrelated living donor
September 2013 Liver Cancer tumor.
October 2013 Ablation of liver tumor.
Now scans every 3 months to watch for new tumors.
Now Status 7 on the wait list for a liver.
How about another decade of solid health?

yeah i dont have the period or even symptoms such as cramping, fatigue, pms lol...this i can get used to lol

Cookie, I had the same issue - and yes, it's mostly thanks to the heparin.  Really not a good thing when you are already anemic.  You don't have to live with it, though.  Lots of options for stopping or reducing it.  I've still got my Mirena and I've had my transplant for a year and a half.  It works too well and is oh-so-much-easier to deal with the PMS and other messy problems.

gyn doc did not seem concerned that I stopped having my period. He says that eggs and all will be okay. He said that I should continue to take birth control b/c that will protect the eggs. just FYI :)

so the two months of bliss are gone away lol...good news is i am not as much of an anemic as i was before i started dialysis...BAD news....that means "Aunt Flo" is back in town and she made a rowsing appearance last week.... :Kit n Stik; :Kit n Stik; :banghead;

ive kind of always been irregular lol but when i start D, id go a few months without one, then id have one for a few WEEKS, then not one for a while, it was terrible, now it seems im having extreme heavy flow (i thnk has alot to do with heprin) and semi reg, but ive also lost alot of weight, I have an IUD, paraguard. it isnt like the mirena, doesnt lighten the period....
D does such strange things
i really wish they would just take out my junk, i dont think ill ever be healthy enough to have more children, so why risk it? but they wont do it... boo
