Well, I have done it! I have made twelve years on hemodialysis! It was November 2nd this year.   Whoo whee what a ride it has been!

12 years - wow, that is a long time. I've just passed 6 months on PD and that is hardly worth noting. Stay well, Kitkatz!

Good to hear, are you doing well and if so have there been any complications along your journey???. I am not on  "D" yet but it will not mbe long and you being on it for 12 years is really good news to hear.

Admin for IHateDialysis 2008 - 2014, retired.
Jenna is our daughter, bad bladder damaged her kidneys.
Was on in-center hemodialysis 2003-2007.
7 yr transplant lost due to rejection.
She did PD Sept. 2013 - July 2017
Found a swap living donor using social media, friends, family.
New kidney in a paired donation swap July 26, 2017.

Seriously though this is amazing and gives all of us still on D the understanding that we can keep doing it and live a life and keep going even when sometimes it all seems too hard. You and Zach amongst others are the real cheerleaders for longer term dialysis, and I take my hat off to you!!

I am not on D yet, but do hope I can make it for 12 years, wow, I would be pretty old by then, LOL. You are one tough cookie Kit, Congratulations, and I hope you have another 12 and then some.

Uninterrupted in-center (self-care) hemodialysis since 1982 -- 34 YEARS on March 3, 2016 !!

No transplant.  Not yet, anyway.  Only decided to be listed on 11/9/06. Inactive at the moment.  ;)
I make films.

Just the facts: 70.0 kgs. (about 154 lbs.)
Treatment: Tue-Thur-Sat   5.5 hours, 2x/wk, 6 hours, 1x/wk
Dialysate flow (Qd)=600;  Blood pump speed(Qb)=315
Fresenius Optiflux-180 filter--without reuse
Fresenius 2008T dialysis machine
My KDOQI Nutrition (+/ -):  2,450 Calories, 84 grams Protein/day.

Pyelonephritis (began at 8 mos old)
Home haemo 1980-1985 (self-cannulated with 15 gauge sharps)
Cadaveric transplant 1985
New upper-arm fistula April 2008
Uldall-Cook catheter inserted May 2008
Haemo-dialysis, self care unit June 2008
(2 1/2 hours X 5 weekly)
Self-cannulated, 15 gauge blunts, buttonholes.
Living donor transplant (sister-in law Kathy) Feb. 2009
First failed kidney transplant removed Apr.  2009
Second trx doing great so far...all lab values in normal ranges

wife of Gregory, who is the kidney patient: 
1986: kidney failure at 19 years old, cause unknown
PD for a year, in-centre haemo for 4 years
Transplant 1 lasted 21 years (Lucy: 1991 - 2012), failed due to Transplant glomerulopathy
5 weeks Haemo 2012
Transplant 2 (Maggie) installed Feb 13, 2013, returned to work June 17, 2013 average crea was 130, now is 140.
Infections in June / July, hospital 1-4 Aug for infections.

Over the years:  skin cancer; thyroidectomy, pneumonia; CMV; BK; 14 surgeries
Generally glossy and happy.

Congrats!!  You have outlived more than 70% of dialysis patients!!! Hopefully we can live a long, close to normal life if we do good dialysis...

In reading this thread over again, I realized that my post may have seemed a bit insensitive.

Kitkatz, I think it's awesome that you've made it 12 years.  It's rather inspirational to the rest of us.  I just have a hard time with these kinds of anniversaries, because I find them a little depressing.  I hope you didn't think my post was in any way demeaning to your milestone
