Reminds me of the summer my anglophile friend dragged me down to the art house every week to see the foreign films. I was really enamoured of theatre, and was thrilled to see the life story of Joe Orton. I can still remember my friend saying she loved the film, but the only thing she did not understand was why it was entitled "Prick Up Your Ears". I was so proud of myself for replying that I thought it had to do with everyone being so gossipy in theatre and how they were all eavesdropping on each others' lives. It wasn't until the film came up in conversation with a few of Gwyn's English friends many years later that one of them said of the title "For fans of wordplay...." that I got it. (I have to work at being this clueless you know!)
To my credit, Gwyn did not have to explain what was so funny when we were staying near King's Road in London and we kept passing by the shoe shop R. Soles.
