Renvela

Anyone on this ? (its a binder) Ive just been prescribed it (after making my neph aware of it !!!) The dietician came over to me the other day and said no you mean Renegel , i said NO its Renvela ..oh she said its that new one ,its only just been approved for use over here , so you will be the first one in the unit to try it ..this should be interesting ! ....gulp !

Both drugs are made by the same company.

Genzyme refers to Renvela as the next-generation version of Renagel, which was approved by the FDA in 1998 to treat phosphorus levels in dialysis patients. Like Renagel, Renvela is a calcium-free, metal-free, non-absorbed phosphate binder, according to Genzyme. The difference between the two drugs is that Renvela has a carbonate buffer.

In a clinical study comparing Renvela to Renagel, both drugs controlled serum phosphorus equally to within KDOQI recommended ranges. Patients on Renvela, however, were more likely to maintain bicarbonate levels within the recommended KDOQI ranges, and had a lower incidence of gastrointestinal adverse events.

Thanks guys    Im just waiting for it to be ordered specially . so i havent got it yet ! But i will keep you informed once i start on it . I have a lot of trouble with binders ..stomach ache or throwing up , so hopefully i might be able to tolerate this one !

My only problem with Renvela is the price - $275 for 30 pills, 1 or 2 pills per meal, so lets say 3 per day, that's 90 per month, that's $825 bucks a month that I don't have, so she has to keep taking Tums and try to control the high Calcium and PTH some other way.....

i take Renvela. Here, it has taken the place of Renevela. I guess it is pretty much the same thing as Renegel. I have been on the new med since September.

Don't you have Medicare?  I pay $1.10 for 270 pills.

Yes, we have Medicare, but the "doughnut hole" is reached real fast, then you pay whatever they want to charge. which in my mind is an outrageous price per pill.......

I was on it.  Had no problems although my insurance company decided i should be on something else = cheaper. 
My main problem is remembering to take them..................

Hope they work well for you KS and that they dont make you sick or nauseated.

No billy , they are supposed to be an advancement on Renagel ! Moi take cheap tat ...lmao     They might turn me into a little

Been on it a year or more and , havent noticed any difference from Renagel.

I'm on both. The reason why I say this every time I'm admited to the hospital they give me renvella because they don't have renagel. It feels the same and smells the same but my only difference I notice is that renvella is easier on my stomach.

It made my hubbys tummy feel awful. 

We paid $825 for the first batch.

NOTE:  THE COMPANY WHO MAKES IT WILL NOT HELP YOU (PATIENT ASSISTANCE PROGRAM) IF YOU HAVE ANY FORM OF INSURANCE. 

With our Medicare D it is $137.00.

Guess I'm lucky, with my insurance I only pay the regular copay as anything else.  I've been on Renvela for a couple months... at first it made me feel sick when I took it, but I guess I've gotten used to it and it doesn't bother me as much as it used to.

Thanks for the input guys . Paying for it ..i dont have to worry about that one ..thanks to the NHS ! Its just i havent found a binder yet that doesnt upset my stomach , so here's hoping !

I take 12-14 Renvela a day and my co-pay is $80 for 3mths.  I don't have any problems with it and other then lowering my phos level it also binds cholesterol.  My cholesterol went from 270 to 160 in 6mths!  Finally a side effect that is positive!
