A week after I got my permacath put in after my graft failed I started having a missed/irregular heartbeat. It's like it is having a murmur or something. I asked the nurse about it at dialysis He listened and heard what it was doing but he didn't know much about it and said it wasn't a concern and didn't know what was causing it. My neph says if my labs are good on Friday then he will refer me to a cartiologist. My question is has anyone else with a permacath experienced this? I know my first one did not do this to my heart, or do you think this is not related to the catheter at all? It is worse on the machine but off the machine it only does it if I'm nealing or if I lay on the side with the catheter. It also does it when I lay on my stomach.

I doubt it is the catheter.  Mine was feeling like it was missing a beat and would flutter.  After not caring and waiting for the "big one" I finally went to the heart doctor.  Instead of missing a beat it was a premature heart beat.  They gave me a bata blocker "Labatol" and it stopped doing that.  You have to be careful of Labatol because it also acts to reduce your BP.

They may want to do an ultrasound on your heart or put you on a 24 hour monitor.  You have to press the button and write it down everytime you feel it.  I was pushing the button and writing so much I gave up but they still got the picture.

Hi sullidog

I happened to notice you being addmitted to hospital with low potassium, is that under control now? Just wondering as i'm pretty sure potassium imbalance can cause an irregular heartbeat.
My partner Mike has an irregular heartbeat and a murmur, but nothing has ever been done about it.

I've got an irregular heartbeat and a murmur, too.  It's not likely the result of the cath - more likely the strain that dialysis puts on the heart.  I'm not on anything for it right now.  The doc just does frequent EKGs to monitor it, and tells me to pay attention to any symptoms like chest pain.

Yes, that is under control. My dialysis center refused to do anything about that one even they knew it was low. I just happen to go for surgery and they refused to do it because of it, all because of my dialysis center didn't think low potassium was a big deal. I will keep you posted on this new problem though.

They refused you surgery? Which kind of surgery? My partner had a parathyroidectomy, with an irregular heartbeat and a murmur.

They didn't refuse it all together, they refused it until they gave me enough potassium so they could do it, they were afraid that it would cause problems, this was my access surgery, they did get to do it a day late.
