swelling vs not swelling

Something im very frustrated about.  Before hubby ever had dialysis he normally felt pretty good, and never swelled in his legs or anywhere.  (He actually started because of low hemoglobulin after a bout with pnumonia.  ) His  blood test numbers are always good, but he's been swollen and holds water a lot now.  Before dialysis, he drank plenty and didnt swell, and only when sick  with cough and cold did he feel bad.  Now ON dialysis, he still feels good, but i just dont get this no drinking nor salt and yet he's swelling NOW.  His creatinine is between 3.6 and i think 4.3 (i already forgot and just notated it somewhere else  )  His gfr was normally about 23-27 but would drop when he got sick to about 17.  Im so confused, and wonder if he should really be doing this.  Is it just the "denial" that ya go through??  He's been on it for about 9 months now, and really, we are doing emotionaly great with it, im just so doubtful..

I really couldn't say, not being a doctor or having much experience myself. The problem would probably just get worse off dialysis. Have you talked to a doctor about your concerns? Wishing you and your husband the best

Thanks Jenny for your response.  Im guessing i just needed the 'vent' cause really, what could anyone say but refer to dr.  We see the dr next week, and i'll ask him then.  wish i didnt need so much reasurance that he REALLY needs this though.  I always feel like im being fooled into stuff so it's really hard to just 'do it' and trust.  I think if he wasnt swelling NOW and not THEN (as in pre dialysis), i would have no problems as he almost always feels good and thats the goal isnt it     Anyway, thanks again for your response..

boswife, its a continual struggle isn't it? What kind of dialysis is he on? We are I'm sure pretty much the same. One day weight up, next weight down. My husband has taken the scales back to Boots twice and told them that they are lying about his weight. I have to smile. Does he watch how much fluid he is drinking and what he is eating, it does make a difference.I still find it frustrating after nearly 18 months.We find we tick along quite nicely and then they change a pill which bal**s every thing up. Why do they do this.

Boy oh boy billybags,, is it ever!!  (a struggle that is)  We have a great life as we are both retired and have this time together and all, and even the time spent doing dialysis  (he's in center and we so far are liking it,,,well, ya know, "liking" is an odd word in this case but you know what i mean) has not been that intruding on our lives.  It's just that I'm ALWAYS stressing about is this right or is that right and why oh why is he swelling when he doesn't drink nearly anything.. and so on and so on.  I'm so very grateful for his amazing upbeat attitude though because when he has had *any* negativity, i drop to another leval myself and thats not good.  He's a trouper so far, and really loves his life, so we work as best as we can to do whats right..

Yeah it's weird he should not swell if he's drinking the adequate quantity of liquid,other than that maybe the pills he take's when he started dialysis is what is the problem,maybe he's having a side effect because of all the chemicals in the pills.I don't trust pills i took them once could'nt pee or use the bathroom for one whole day.That is not good for the kidneys.Watch what you eat too.
