http://www.allkidney.com/2009/11/beneficial-effect-of-coffee-in-dialysis-patients.html

Interesting small study comparing coffee drinkers on dialysis.

I have heard mixed stories about dialysis. Its good that someone has decided to do some research here .
Its always nice to be able to refer to evidence when giving advice.

Ha!....

Now this is one I'm interested in... My mum (along with everyone else in ESRF) that I've spoken to have been specifically told NOT to drink coffee!...

It's one of the things Mum misses most!... And she only ever drank instant!...

I'll be looking further into this one!....

Thanks Roger...

Why has your mum been told that?
I drink coffee or tea all the time.

When my kidneys failed i asked the dietician what was best tea or coffee, she was like "whatever you prefer".
I used to have a coffee every day at the hospital while on HD.
You hear so many conflicting versions of what a "D" patient should avoid, sometimes it's hard to know what to believe.

I can only drink decaf, as I respond to the caffeine strongly, and my bp shoots up.

This is why I walk into Dialsysis with a big 'ole cup of coffee every time!  No BP crashes...

I haven't been told not to drink coffee, and if anyone tries to tell me not to they better look out  :Kit n Stik;

I am drinking it and loving it.

I've only been told that real coffee is higher in potassium than instant.  But instant is no worse than any other drink.  I think your mum should have a coffee if she wants Carolyn.

Yeah Hanify, in some of my info here it says i can have half a cup of percolated coffee occasionally as it's high in potassium.
But i just drink instant anyways. Love making iced coffee, addicted to the stuff.

Hi Everybody...

Thanks for the advice and information...

When she was first diagnosed, she was told by the dietitian "No Caffine based drinks... Weak tea, if you must"... Thankfully of late, they're being FAR more realistic... Even letting her have the occasional banana!...

I'll mention coffee the powers that be...

Thanks...

Thank you, thank you for spreading this info.  Coffee is the only thing we aren't allowed so the techs and nurses sneak it out of their break room for me.  And they have the best new coffee machine (you know one of those individual cup things).  At least now if I get them into trouble I can justify it to powers.

Now for the numbers:
http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/search/

All of the brews refer to a six ounce cup (179g) of coffee.

Coffee, brewed from grounds, prepared with tap water  --  87 mg Potassium (K)
Coffee, brewed from grounds, prepared with tap water, decaffeinated  --  96 mg Potassium (K)

Coffee, instant, regular, prepared with water  --  54 mg Potassium (K)
Coffee, instant, decaffeinated, powder, prepared with water  --  64 mg Potassium (K)

The winner is ... Coffee, instant, regular, prepared with water  --  54 mg Potassium!!
And decaffeinated coffee is always higher in K than regular.

Darth that is crazy what they told your mum.

At my unit yes they said Coffee has K in it, but they never said it's got heaps of K or anything. I have one latte every weekday morning(maybe I should cut down??) but at the unit during D they offer tea and coffee.. and sometimes even go to the cafe and buy "real" barista coffe... if I offer some $$ they will buy me one too (though every few weeks I shout them :) ). Of course on the machine is the best time to have coffee or a hot choc because the machine will filter the K out while there - that's why I am taking chocolate mud cake in tomorrow for my birthday!  :rofl;

Seriously I think a little coffee can't be that bad... or can it? I might cut down before the next bloods and see what happens to my K (it has been up a bit)

I know it would be good for me right this minute... unfortunately it will be instant folgers for now -- double crystals (why am I up so early -- it's not Richardmel or Chris birthday either -- well might be Richardmel's since who understands that  time zone).. but now I feel ok about asking for the good stuff when I get there (to d).
