A successfull day at D

  Well after two weeks of resting my fistula..... I returned back to D and it was successfull..Did a whole three hours...... Now I have done Dialysis for two whole days in the past three weeks......  Hoping to continue with no problems.....  but If I need to take another rest  I hope I can go on another road trip..... this last road trip to NM was wonderfull.....  Saw many hot air balloons...... I love those........

How do you get to take a break???  Maybe your kidneys are still working a tad bit??

yeah  - a break of two weeks?? I'd LOVE that!!! wow, imagine being able to say "see ya in two" and get off for a week or so.... oh no.. please don't pinch me.. you'll wake me up... noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

    Well guys    I can take a break   cause I just started D.....  I only started a couple of weeks ago  and  only did one session..... I started pretty early   GFR was 11   so I wasnt big time sick.....   and I have no problems with fluid.........   I feel like I am not sick....    I was feeling sick when I started but not now......maybe I am cured....!!!

I'm curious because I've never known anyone to once start be allowed to break after that. Did the docs/unit say you could take a break? Or did you decide to because you felt better?

I'm envious!!!

  My doctor said I could take a break for a couple of weeks to give my fistula a break..... I only dialysis one time and then the next three time they infiltrated me and my arm was so swollen and black and blue..... so they let me off for a couple of weeks.... said that my fistula may not be quite ready.....  So I went back in yesterday  and  did a three hour session  and  no problems..... I am hoping that I continue....with no problems...  I am glad they held my spot.....   So  the break was great.... I am so new to all of this  I still have alot to learn.... but my pressures yesterday were great....venus was 170 and arterial was 180  and speed was 225....  I am hoping to continue with slow speeds and starting my button holes as soon as my fistula will allow   as I am going to go home and do nxstage.....then I will travel.......

cool! you've got it all worked out then. You were very lucky to get that little break in my opinion. I'm glad things are going well now.

That sounds good to me. My husbands neph likes to start patients on dialysis when they are still feeling well, he says it makes it easier to come to terms with. Good luck to you.

What does a doctor know about coming to terms with ESRD and dialysis?  That is a bold statement for him to make.  Does your doctor know that "coming to terms" with dialysis is like a shoot out in the OK corral?

  Ok    I am on a roll.....   two days of successful D......   at this rate I will be a old hat at this.....  then comes the hard part.......  learning to do it myself.......

kitkatz, I think when he said "coming to terms with it" he meant when you are very very ill, being sick etc you have enough to cope with. If you go on dialysis when you are fairly "well" you can accept things a little better. I think thats what he meant. I know no body ever comes to terms with dialysis. Sorry if I upset you.

I was not upset, just felt sad that a doctor could or would say this to a patient coping with a disease.

  Ok   Day three on a successfull D day...but this time   my arm hurt..... almost the whole time.... it was like it was stinging where the needles where in .....  and a dull pain.....  The pain increased over time......   Tech said that maybe the needle was hitting the wall......  next time she said for me to say something and she will move it around......  boy I dont want to infiltrate this baby fistula....   well  Monday will be another D Day and hopefully  a successful one......   
 
      the best part of my night was the man that was sitting next to me  got the call...... the call that they had a transplant for him.....  he cried.... and was very happy....they were all very happy..... I almost cried my self..... it was so moving.....    He was quickly taken off the machine and he drove to the hospital.......   I never thought that it could happen right there ....but the techs said it does.......

I would break down and cry if I could get two weeks off!  What a wonderful gift.  I would so love to go even just a week without dialysis, but that will never be.  Sigh...

You should definitely let them know if you're feeling pain from the needle. If it is touching the wall then yes you could blow it, and dang it it's uncomfortable. They just move it back into position and everything is much better. Don't feel you shouldn't say anything!!! This is important

So glad the guy got the call - how awesome is that?!!!

I was talking to my lot a few months ago asking them if anyone had gotten the call while on dialysis with them and they said no.. and I thought that was weird (I have this funny idea that's what might happen to me). Well a week ago it happened!!!

Apparently it went like this:

The main doc called down and said "Hey how do I contact patient X?" they said "Well he's right here doing his session" "Oh cool, I'll come down and see him myself" - so he rolls up and basically tells him in person. This guy's pulse skyrocketed(as you can imagine!) with excitement and everyone was SO HAPPY it was awesome!!!

So far though the kidney has not kicked in

My regular Dr, (the one before the one I have now) told me to stay off dialysis as long as possible and  that I could come off D if my numbers improved and go back on if they dropped.  I don't know oif this is true or not.  She always seemed kind of ditzy to me.

Well over the weekend   they had me do a 24 hour urine..... and I am going to turn that in today......   I went 2200ml  in 24 hours  and so I dont know if that is good or bad as I have never kept tract..... they said they wanted to test my urine to see about my clearence.....  not sure what that is all about.....

    Hopeing that tonights D will go well.... and yes I will make sure to talk to someone about any pain......

Wow I am jealous. THat urine output is wonderful
 I am lucky to leave 100ml to 500ml. I cant believe that you only have 11 GFR. ARe you sure about that?? Doouble check. At 20 GFR you are almost considered ESRD and at that point you can go ont he transplant list! What is your creatinine level? That is awesome. Too bad you are not going on PD, with that much urine you might be able to do 1 or 2 exchanges instead of 4 or more!

 I dont know what my current GFR is    but last one was 11   and then I started D... I have only done D 4 times...   So I dont even know how clean my blood is....  I think they are taking labs tonight.....  and will do the urine thing too....   If I dont need D  I dont need to do it.......I have felt better since I started.....  I dont have as much fluid and I am not caughing and throwing up any more.... In fact  I feel just fine.....  I wish I could of started  PD     but since I had a few surgeries  they told me that it wouldnt be a good idea.......   I guess bladder repair was the big concern.....     anyway....   I wasnt sure how much urine is normal.....   I remember going a half a coffee can when I was out in the boat a few times.....LOL.....

I live in New Mexico! Here in Albuquerque we have a massive Balloon festival every year. Up until this year, for the last few years I hadn't gone. I got a mobility scooter and was able to go, but I remembered the reason we haven't gone, wasn't because of the mobility issue, it was because the place was a money pit. The food looked delicious, but it was greazy crap and it cost $40.00 to feed 4 people. (2 of them kids) The parking was horrendous!, and expensive. It's local and I guess I don't think that it's as cool as I thought it was when we first moved here. If you like huge crowds and have plenty of money, it's OK.
This year we got 4 tickets and a parking pass for free. We got to the fiesta (for the glow) at about 6:30 pm. the Balloons started filling up and the wind started to blow about five minutes later. There were fireworks, but we came to see the balloons. In previous years we stayed for the whole thing, but this year we left the minute they started to take the balloons down. It was much faster leaving than ever before.
We took a day trip up through Jemez Canyon, up to Bandoleer Indian ruins. I got the scooter out to go on the walk to the indian ruins. It was fun. The Grand-kids loved it.
New Mexico's a really cool place. There's a whole lot to see really close. I too feel a whole lot better on dialysis. I lost 50 lb fliuid in the first few months. I've been using a cane for years because of stupid stuff I did when I was young, thinking that I was gonna' live forever. Now that I've admitted being disabled and stopped pretending to be just fine, and being disappointed in the results, I'm much happier. Having to go to dialysis isn't "the end of the world" like it is on TV. I can't do everything I want to. I never made that long trip to Alaska. But Ive been every where else. (almost)
