Martin (the snorer) & Mack (cat w/renal failure)

« on: August 03, 2009, 10:07:41 PM »

Hello IHD buddies!
It has been quite a while since I have been on.  I can't even remember when my last post was.  Things are going ok I guess...  I had started PD back in Nov, and started getting fluid around my lungs.  They pulled the fluid off twice and then asked me if I wanted to "fill in" the sack around the lung or switch to hemo.  So to hemo I switched.  I had a friend who was the same blood type that came forward in Dec and said he wanted to see if we were a match.  I gave him my coordinators number and he called to get things rolling.  Well, it turns out our insurance would cover his transplant costs but not the testing.  But they said medicare would cover it.  I had applied for medicare when I had started pd because my social worker said I would need it at some point.  Long story short, after the SS office had lost my paperwork 4 times, I finally got that straight in late May.  My friend came up in June to get all of his testing done.  We are a match and he appears to be healthy.  Well, 2 weeks ago they were supposed to present him to the transplant committee.  They called him the morning they were supposed to present and said they didn't have all of the test results.  Then they were supposed to present him last Friday.  He called me Thursday and said his wife was scared and wanted a few questions answered and had tried all week to get in touch with the surgeon.  The social worker said she would not "clear" him until she spoke with his wife and knew she was ok with everything.  I can respect her having questions and being concerned..I mean it is a big deal, it's not like he is having his teeth cleaned.  ;D  Well, the coordinator said she would go ahead and present him medically so we could already have those ducks in a row.  Well, the surgeon didn't show up so they couldn't present him....isn't that special!   :sarcasm;  The best thing was that no one knew where he was...he wasn't in surgery....he must have been on the golf course!!   ???  Anyway, I had asked everyone in previous posts how everyone felt about the pros/cons between pd and hemo.  I am doing the incenter hemo, and I have to say overall it hasn't been that bad.  I do MWF so at least my weekends are free.  Well, I won't go on anymore...just wanted to give an update to those who might be interested.

Good to hear from you Wayne. I hope things work out with the donor - it must make him nervous to know that no one knew where the surgeon was... odd huh?   ???
Well, keep on moving forward. I am glad that you have been doing well incenter.  :cheer:

Hi wayne, good to see you posting. I love those cats by the way!  Sorry you've had such troubles, some of it is beyond belief (the missing surgeon etc) but then again perhaps not so surprising, i do believe to them it is often only a job.  Good luck with the tests etc, I hope your friend can donate.  I'm sure we can all understand his wife's concerns but how frustrating not to be able to get anwers.
Wishing you and your friend all the best, let us know how it goes .............and don't leave it so long next time. ;)

Good to hear from you, Wayne.  Sorry to hear about the difficulties with getting the transplant off the ground, but hoping things will move ahead for you soon.
