I think I know why African Americans have such high rates of
hypertension and kidney failure. Their ancestors lived in equatorial climates.
The sweated profusely all day long.
A much larger part of their waste removal  from the blood
and fluid removal came from the skin through sweating therefore their kidneys
developed less because they where much less needed.
Now African Americans live in cooler regions with AC, do less manual labor
and sweat much less. So now their less developed kidneys
are being overload causing high blood pressure and kidney failure.
This is something prominent African American leaders so look into.
Kidney failure is 4 times greater among African Americans than the general population.
African Americans should change their diet to eat less salt and they should take
regular saunas to increase the daily amount of sweat. High blood pressure
and kidney failure rates are exploding in the African American community.

Yikes Billy, that's a really far-fetched idea, in my opinion.  :P

In South Africa with 80% of Africans it is very strange that we do not have more men with kindney failure. (it is not much warmer here than in US) Maybe our Africans' kidneys are more developed than the African Americans? heheheh

I wonder how did the doc's tested to found out that Africans' kidneys are underdeveloped????   Just wondering...mmm

I don't think I'll take the number and duration of saunas that are advocated by Billybilll.  That extra sweating would mean less work for my kidneys and might result in their shrinking.  :urcrazy;

Keep 'em coming billybill; a smile a day and all that...

Getting the heck out of town.

« Reply #11 on: July 21, 2009, 05:23:43 PM »

I agree that Billybobs idea is far fetched, but I've honestly been wondering if it is true that African Americans have more kidney failures than Anglos and if so why?  It seems that at least 3/4 of the population at my center are African American.  It could be the downtown location I guess.  Could it have anything to do with diet  (salt or high blood pressure)..  I've just been looking for an appropriate place to ask this.  Maybe it just appears that way to me.

African Americans are more prone to diabetes (type 2) which is the number one cause of kidney failure in this country, last I heard.

African Americans went through a classic evolutionary bottleneck when they were transported over here on the slave ships. You need certain traits to survive a long, brutal trip like that, and those who survived would have more of these traits (and presumably specific genes) than those that perished. Then when these Africans arrived in the Americas, the genes that allowed them to survive starvation were amplified when the survivors reproduced (founder effect). The survivors probably carried a gene or genes that makes an individual more likely to develop diabetes.

We have very hot areas in America, too. This theory is ridiculous. Less developed kidneys?
