What was your GFR when you started Dialysis?

My GFR was about 7 when I had my PD catheter implanted. It made it down to 4 or 5 by the time I was actually able to start dialysis. After that, at times when my dialysis wasn't nearly effective enough, my total GFR (including dialysis) made it down to 2 (creatinine of 30).

I was luckily able to avoid the big D, but my GFR was 7 when I transplanted in Nov. It had been at 7 for a few months.

I think they said mine was 8 back in 1999 in the ER, but do not have any lab results from that date or for that over a month long visit. I'll have to ask if I still can get those results easily the next time I get monthly labs.

Diabetes - age 7
Neuropathy in legs age 10
Eye impairments and blindness in one eye began in 95, major one during visit to the Indy 500 race of that year
-glaucoma and surgery for that
-cataract surgery twice on same eye (2000 - 2002). another one growing in good eye
- vitrectomy in good eye post tx November 2003, totally blind for 4 months due to complications with meds and infection
Diagnosed with ESRD June 29, 1999
1st Dialysis - July 4, 1999
Last Dialysis - December 2, 2000
Kidney and Pancreas Transplant - December 3, 2000
Cataract Surgery on good eye - June 24, 2009
Knee Surgery 2010
2011/2012 in process of getting a guide dog
Guide Dog Training begins July 2, 2012 in NY
Guide Dog by end of July 2012
Next eye surgery late 2012 or 2013 if I feel like it

I don't quite remember. I think it was 15 when they realized my kidneys were failing. They said that I would soon have to go on dialysis. Then when I returned to the doctor, it had fallen to less than 10 so I had to get a quick catheter and start dialysis.

My husbands GFR was 5 and he was still feeling quite well. His neph wanted him to go on to CAPD while he was still feeling well. All in all we had a good few years of his GRF going up one month and down another, but in the end we had to succumb to the dreaded dialysis.

Saw the neph today. He told Jim that even though Jim didn't 'need' a transplant right away it was time to consider the possibility. He asked Jim if it was ok to refer us to the transplant center and Jim agreed. Big step....I just hope he tests out to be a good candidate and I test out to be his donor. Dr. Thomas also told us about the newer 'partners' program where you are cross matched to another patient/donor who don't match each other but might match you and your partner. Either way...it's a step forward instead of backwards..  |

Mine was about 16. The first time round (prior to my 1st transplant) it was less but I never want to feel that awful ever again so I chose to start earlier rather than wait. My neph was happy about this as he was concerned about malnutrition and my becoming weaker and more run down.

Uldall-Cook catheter inserted May 2008
Haemo-dialysis, self care unit June 2008
(2 1/2 hours X 5 weekly)
Self-cannulated, 15 gauge blunts, buttonholes.
Living donor transplant (sister-in law Kathy) Feb. 2009
First failed kidney transplant removed Apr. 2009
Second trx doing great so far...all lab values in normal ranges

As you can see, each person is so different. I've been hanging out around 12 for quite some time. The neph and I will know when the time is right. Meantime, I am on the list and I hope Jim gets through the evaluation process quickly.  |

Mom's was 11. It was 14 when her neph suggested dialysis, and had gone down to 11 by the time she finallly decided to have the pd cath put in, a year later.

Hubby is at 5 right now...... he felt OK until the AV graft surgery on Nov 2nd. Now he feels awful.

When I was told I had to start dialysis in September, it was 14 but by the time I actually started dialysis in late October, it was 12.

My nephrologist wants to avoid it and get a transplant first (personally I wouldn't mind starting at this point) but if my GFR hits 10 I'll start dialysis. It's 16 now and sometimes I don't want to stand up (my insurance doesn't cover dialysis until it hits 10).
