Sentencing Delayed For Kidney Donor Who Fled
Last Update: 5/29 9:28 am

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Sentencing has been delayed for a man who got out of jail by offering to donate a kidney for his son but fled to Mexico instead.

Byron Perkins pleaded guilty to drug and firearms charges in federal court in Louisville in 2005.

Perkins was back in court Thursday, but his sentencing was delayed to give attorneys a chance to file briefs on the latest motion to withdraw Perkins' guilty plea.

Perkins is due back in court on July 9.

He was awaiting sentencing when he petitioned a judge in early 2006 to free him so he could be tested as a potential donor for his teenage son, Destin.

Instead, Perkins fled to Mexico with his girlfriend. Federal authorities caught up with the pair in 2007 in Puerto Vallarta.

Destin eventually received a kidney from another relative.

Former fugitive sentenced to more than 42 years

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) -- A man who got out of jail by offering to donate a kidney for his son but fled to Mexico instead has been sentenced to more than 42 years in federal prison.

Byron Keith Perkins pleaded guilty to drug and firearms charges in federal court in Louisville in 2005.

The U.S. Attorney's Office in Louisville says Perkins was sentenced Wednesday to 42 years and 5 months in prison.

His son eventually received a kidney from another relative.

In a perfect world, they'd still yank a kidney out of him and give it to someone in need.
