Donnia RoblesDonnia Robles, a San Angelo woman whose long-awaited kidney transplant last summer gave her a new lease on life, had a setback in late April.
After an operation to replace her hip, she experienced an allergic reaction to a drug that caused her new kidney to begin failing.
"It was extremely scary," she said. "I thought I was back to where I started."
When doctors treated her with steroids and dialysis, the kidney began responding.
"They've told me nine times out of 10 the kidney will bounce back," she said.
She will undergo more testing Tuesday.
When Joyce Steen Turney, her kidney donor, first heard the news that the kidney might fail, she immediately drove from her home in Hamilton to San Angelo.
"She was so funny," Robles said. "She walked into my hospital room and said, 'What are you doing? My kidney ain't no quitter. I'm here to fight with you.'"
