Finally! I have a surgery date for my fistula placement. Yay!! I'll be getting it next Friday (Feb. 6th) at 1:30 pm.    :yahoo;

New upper-arm fistula April 2008
Uldall-Cook catheter inserted May 2008
Haemo-dialysis, self care unit June 2008
(2 1/2 hours X 5 weekly)
Self-cannulated, 15 gauge blunts, buttonholes.
Living donor transplant (sister-in law Kathy) Feb. 2009
First failed kidney transplant removed Apr.  2009
Second trx doing great so far...all lab values in normal ranges

I hope you have better luck than me paddbear. Just ask the doc what he plans to do when he actually goes in and sees the vein for him/herself and sees bad calcification of the veins from diabetes. With us diabetics, the calcification in our veins makes it more difficult. You know I worry about yah and don't want you to have to go thru something twice that could have been done right in the first place.

Eye impairments and blindness in one eye began in 95, major one during visit to the Indy 500 race of that year
   -glaucoma and surgery for that
     -cataract surgery twice on same eye (2000 - 2002). another one growing in good eye
     - vitrectomy in good eye post tx November 2003, totally blind for 4 months due to complications with meds and infection

Diagnosed with ESRD June 29, 1999

Here's some info on calcification.  Another very good reason to watch your phosphorus (my main reason for avoiding many foods and for never drinking sodas, especially colas) very carefully, switch from calcium based binders if necessary, take calcitriol if need be and be sure to get enough good quality dialysis when the time comes.

My phos level is actually normal, but that's probably because I eat very little nowadays, and what I do eat, only half of that stays down!

That's good that it's normal Paddbear and it's something to watch very carefully, especially as a diabetic.  Mine will be normal and then go out of whack seemingly suddenly.  I also had to switch from calcium carbonate binders to Renagel which is expensive but had to be done.  I know several patients who run high phosphorus levels but don't take it very seriously and I worry about them.

Paddbear even before kidney problems, diabetics are know to have calcifications of the arteries and veins. It is one of the many complications of diabetes. It is also known as hardening of the arteries.. I use to have information from the diabetes instructor on it which showed the progression of it thru years of not watching diet. It can lead to hieart problems and strokes in diabetics among other things if not controlled thru diet and cholesterol monitoring.

Aren't we lucky to be diabetics? :sarcasm;
