HIV + CKD

I have been told that, due to HIV & Hep C infection, dialysis will not be effective for me for very long.  A surgeon in Sydney (Dr David Gracey) said that studies have shown that HIV+ patients can expect to get 2 - 5 years benefit from dialysis before that started to fail.

This makes the need for a replacement kidney even more imperative.

Has anyone else ever heard of such a thing and/or can anyone think why dialysis would cease to work after so short a time.

Hhhhmmmm I have never heard of this. I hope someone can shed some light on this. I met a mom Tuesday who was explaining to me her daughter was on dialysis for 5 years. I asked about gettting a kidney and mom said, "No we will never get a kidney. She has other major health issues." and I said, "Well what are her other health issues?" She said, "They are to horrible to talk about." The only thing I could really think of is that she may have HIV. I tried to talk to the mom that it wasn't the end but she just didn't want to hear it....but her daughter has been on dialysis for 5 years and seems to be doing well.

I can't see why dialysis won't work for him for longer.

Maybe they are referring to the general health or maybe dialysis removes the HIV meds from the blood.

In South Africa (Cape Town) they transplant HIV kidneys into HIV recipients. We are the first to try that and as far as I can tell from info on google it works.

Hope you can find a better answer.

Not knowing much about how HIV infection would play into it, but there are possible reasons from the Hep C  infection I can think of.  As you know, Hep C damages the liver often resulting in cirrohis. That alone can have complications including low platelet issues, blood pressure issues, etc IF, you have even advanced  that far. About 10 of 100 will get cirrhosis.  My husband has Hep C also. He's been on Dialysis about 4 years now.
