i'm in hospital at the mo, with a suspectd virus. i'm also two weeks away from a live transplant, but more of that later. the doc came to see me yesterday ad asked me 'are you going to take your transplant meds this time arund?' i asked him what hemeant and he said in an accusatory tone 'what happened to your last kidney?' i started to tell him and he just cut me off! i felt like i was being called a liar. doesn't he know that someone DIED to give me that kidney? that i had the utmost duty to do my best by it and look after it? i had 15 great years out of that kidney and to be accused of not looking after it sent me ito a bit of a tailspin. where did he get this idea from? who told him that i didn't take my meds (not true btw)? is this fiction in my notes? aaaaaaarrrrrrggggghhhhhhhh
anyway, on another depressing note, transplant might be off due to the fact that i had a suspected pulmonary embolism 3 months ago, and no-one thought to tell the transplant team...... even more aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaawrgh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Doctors and their assumptions make me so angry.  Back when I started to lose my first kidney transplant, I had come down with a virus.  Once taking all the tests, the doctor came in and asked me, "What drugs are you using?"

'Excuse me."

"What drugs are you on?"

I was taken aback.

'I've never abused drugs in my life."

She was nonplussed.

"I'm going to ask me again, what drugs are you taking?"

I paused for a moment, let out a loud sigh, and responded, "If you ask me that again, I'm walking out of here and reporting you to hospital management for making false accusations."

She didn't say another word after that.

Recently, my nephrologist suggested a new primary doctor for me.  I went to see her because I had come down with another ear infection.

"What drugs are you using?"

Flashback time.  "Excuse me."

"You look older much older than your age.  What drugs are you using?"  This was on a Monday when I hadn't had Dialysis in three days, so I was all puffy and gross.

"I'm on Dialysis.  That's why my appearance is affected like this."

She shook her head and didn't believe me.

I'm still searching for a primary physician.

The problem is doctors who have practicing for years upon years have heard every lie ever written.  So they bring those preconceived notions to every patient they meet.  Its unfair to both parties and just spreads anger like mayo across the medical field.

Carla, I am FUMING on your behalf. Fifteen years for a cadaver kidney is better than expected, and if this doctor had any medical expertise whatsoever, he would know this. Aside from that, you can do everything right and have the kidney fail within months. What a supreme jerk this guy is!

I was treated similarly as a child, led to believe that if my kidney *ever* failed, it would be entirely my fault. It has only been in the last 10 years or so that doctors have started assuming that I was some wonder patient who would do everything they ask without question because my first transplant lasted so long. Only my GP knows the truth, and he thinks my self-adjustments to medication actually helped me in the end. Who knows - so much is down to luck.

I see you're in the UK, and I know things work differently there, but I would certainly find out how you can complain. You're right to worry that such a ridiculous accusation might be in your records. I would request a copy to make sure, and if it is in there, I would do whatever you have to do to see it removed. If you have more interactions with this doctor, please set him straight. Tell him that since he didn't let you finish answering the question about what happened to your last kidney before, that you are going to answer it now. I would ask him if he honestly believes that every transplant will last a lifetime if the patient only takes their meds.

Oh, I so want to talk to this guy, and explain, using small words and only a smattering of profanity, how transplant really works. :boxing; Good luck, and I hope your next transplant goes through after all.

Henry, your story was a satisfying read. You and I will get along just fine.... :beer1;
