Has anyone heard of ionized water? I've been going to physical therapy for the last 4 months for a hip problem, and my PT said he had been looking into it. Apparently, most water is Ph balanced, sometimes slightly acidic, and ionized water is alkaline instead of acidic. The "theory" is that the ionized water is a powerful antioxidant, balances body Ph, detoxifies, hydrates better, enhances mineral absorption, and increases oxygen to your muscles so they work more efficiently. My PT read somewhere that it was better for kidney patients because it processes through better.
Now, I am always a skeptic when it comes to putting things in my body that veer from the norm. Even though I have had a transplant, I still have kidney disease and I want to do all I can to be as healthy as possible to keep this kidney. Also, since I have FSGS there is a good possibility that the disease can recur in my new kidney so I am already thinking about limiting my protein and doing anything else that will preserve my kidney function.
I plan on asking my neph whether he has ever heard anything beneficial about drinking ionized water, but I wondered if anyone on IHD had ever heard or read about ionized water (or tried it).
For all I know, it's all a crock of you-know-what!

Hi Jill, i have never heard of it but now you've made me curious, please post whatever you find out about this, i am sure this information will be helpful to many. Thank you and hope your doing good girlfriend, ;) :thumbup;

I have the same perspectives about the type of water I am drinking and try to limit my protein intake.
I use Brita pitcher to filter my water. I also try to limit my protein intake but I also aware that I need protein to maintain muscles with so many potent medications that I am taking from post transplant already.

Karol you want to look this up for us............ ;)

OK - there are varying perspectives (here are examples):
from Snake oil on tap http://www.chem1.com/CQ/ionbunk.html - "Ionized water" is one of many products and panaceas that the wonky-water wellness industry flogs onto the large segment of the general public that lacks the scientific background to distinguish scientific fact from pseudoscientific hype when the two are closely intertwined. The purpose of this page is to critically examine some of the claims about "ionized" and alkaline waters from the standpoint of modern chemistry and physiology in order to provide you with the information you need to make your own informed decision before opening your wallets to the hucksters of these products, which are totally lacking in scientific support." Go to website to read more.
from KIDNEY DISEASE - A HOLISTIC THERAPY http://www.health-science-spirit.com/kidney.html - "Instead of Microhydrin you may also use strong electrolytic reduced or ionized water (ERW). While the addition of Microhydin or ERW is not essential, they provide strong antioxidant activity that helps to regenerate kidney functions. Preferably start with smaller amounts and only gradually increase to 3 liters if problems arise, such as water retention, then reduce the fluid intake temporarily." More on that page too.
Here's an interesting site: Gallery of water-related pseudoscience - Junk science in the marketplace http://www.chem1.com/CQ/gallery.html - "This index lists some of the companies, products, processes and people whose names I have come across in my explorations of water-related pseudoscience and quackery.The links in the left column take you to the sites that promote the product. The links in the middle column are to locations in my site that provide debunking information on a particular "technology". In my opinion, there is no credible scientific support for any of the claims referenced here."
It appears that there's no real scientific sources available, except in claims by the companies who sell the products. That's all I could find.

Thank you Karol :2thumbsup;

Did you read the part of the article about urine therapy?EEEEEEEWWWWWWW! :P :P :P
Looks like the ionized water might be a crock 'o s_ _ _.

I also have a Brita water filter pitcher. The water tastes good and makes clearer ice cubes than tap water.

Watch this, it will make you wonder if bottled water is good for ANYONE :thumbup; :thumbdown; you decide ;) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XfPAjUvvnIc

Don't know how it relates to kidneys, or lack thereof, but it appears there has been some research.
